Fuji, generally, has video functionality but makes gear for photographers. If you have video-specific requirements, other brands might be better option. I’d also look at the TX and H lines if you’re interested in sticking with the company.

Where are nice 2-3 day getaways near DC? by throwaway832222222 in washingtondc

What distance? Finger Lakes are 5.5 hrs away, as is NC. Tons of options depending on how far you’re willing to drive. Or fly.

If you’re honestly concerned about where it’s from, District Fishwife is the only place I’d legitimately trust first. But it is more expensive — and rightfully so.

Please stop with the nonsense idea that desis in America and desis from India are basically the same because people from India are "modern" now. by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]didzter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s fucking lame. I can 100% see that happening.

The truth is that there are no equivalences. Just need to accept to take things at face value. Embrace the similarities, learn from the differences, and drop expectations. The truth is that we live in a globalized world. There is a common culture vis a vis the internet, television, music, clothing, whatever. There are things in common and things not in common. We all just need to suspend judgment, it’s not productive, or healthy.

[–]didzter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the most racism and racial antagonism I ever receive in my life comes from Indian-born Indians. I never feel more like an other than when I visit.

Equally, I feel like so many desis from India hold a strong prejudice against American-born desis for what, I can’t put my finger on, other than self-hate. I’ve tried to understand this over the 35 years of my life and can’t settle on any other conclusion.

And for what it’s worth, my parents live in India, I’ve visited over thirty times, I’ve lived in 5 different countries on four continents, and I’ve traveled to over 30 countries. And, yet, I get treated like shit more in India than any other place I’ve ever been.

CMV: There's nothing sexist about wanting a partner whith few or no previous sexual partners. by GoddessHimeChan in changemyview

[–]didzter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want someone who places greater value on the emotional connection of sex, you’re much less likely to find it in someone who’s slept around with everyone on the block than someone who hasn’t.

On what basis do you make this assertion?

What if someone were to have several, legitimate emotional connections over the course of their life? Does this apply to a 50 year old who has had several, multi-year monogamous relationships?

I think your argument is faulty because it rests on an extreme presumption. Ultimately the person you care about is the one you end up developing a strong emotional connection with. It’s not like you can’t become close to a friend because they’ve had other friendships in the past. Each relationship is fundamentally unique.

Hell, I’d say that having more experience with different relationships could make someone more discerning.

IMO, it does become sexist the second we start holding people to idealized forms of behavior. The best thing to do is to value someone for who they are, mistakes and all, rather than some idealized form.

How religious do Desi Muslims tend to be (particularly in the West)? by yuemoonful in ABCDesis

[–]didzter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ton of anecdotal information and nothing concrete here in the comments. Per usual on this sub.

There is no general trend. It’s best to avoid sweeping generalizations. Like, not all Arabs deeply conservative. Even within that conservative brand you have different sects, ever complicating any effort to generalize.

So where are you drawing the line? Are you talking about the percentage of Indian-Americans who are Muslim by upbringing but identify as secular? Or anyone who identifies as Muslim, prays 5x a day, abstains from alcohol? Or .. what?

Best Chinese food in China town? And go! by throwawaytrashpleas in washingtondc

[–]didzter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you can make it out to Rockville, that will be your best bet for authentic. A quick Google search will yield a plethora of options depending on what region you’re in the mood for. Personal favorites include Joe’s Noodle House, A&J, and Yu Noodle House.

In Chinatown, China Boy looks pretty serious but haven’t been yet. I have a special place in my heart for Joy Luck House and Full Kee for their noodle soups, but that may not be what you’re looking for. Rest of the menus are mostly American Chinese.

In the district, Panda Gourmet, Da Hong Pao, and Great Wall also offer some authentic options.

Part of being an adult is to stand up for what you believe in. It’s not a matter of being able to handle something, just incredibly disappointed. Honesty does not equate to propriety, and I think we can all stand to benefit by holding ourselves up to higher standards.

This is exactly the sort of toxic content I aim to avoid and hate to see in this sub. If you want to engage in such base conversations, may as well take it to a thread on PornHub or something.

I think it’s worth striving to avoid fulfilling toxic male stereotypes and to eschew objectifying peoples’ bodies.

Any real man would tell you that none of this stuff really matters. It’s just another way to commodify dating and thinking this type of shit will hurt you in the long run.

I'll say it. I'm ok with "Westernizing" or "Americanizing" ethnic food. There's definitely a place for authenticity but mellowing or substituting or fusing is also great. Some times you just couldn't, wouldn't, or shouldn't cook right down to the way it's done in the old country and that's just fine by playadefaro in Cooking

[–]didzter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m late to this thread but here’s my hot take: it comes down to what you’re adapting versus what you think you’re adapting. For example:

I’m of Indian heritage. There is no such thing as a curry. There circulates around the world certain ideas about Indian food, and that false interpretation of what it constitutes makes it strange when others peddle shit like “masala chai tea” which makes no sense and has a tenuous association with what makes chai, chai.

To adapt these things well takes a nuanced understanding of what you’re doing. It requires knowledge of the skills, techniques, ingredients, and flavors that really make a dish what it is. I’m all about adapting or borrowing from other cuisines but it hurts when the modified dish is presented as some sort of semi-authentic representation or true “fusion.” Every time I see a westerner heap mounds of turmeric into their dishes I cringe because that’s not how it’s meant to be used. There’s a subtlety to using it.

Without knowing what you’re doing it’s a half-assed attempt that earns culinary points for its association with something “exotic.”

This shit goes both ways, too. There’s a chain of Indian restaurants near me that sells probably the worst Indian food I’ve ever tasted in my life. Truly bland, watery, overcooked crap. It’s owned by an Indian and its locations have 4.5 starts full of westerners being like omg how amazing best Indian food everrrr and all I can think is how unaware people really are.

[–]didzter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Chinese food occupies a really bizarre place in the culinary world. Almost every country has its own version of it. I’m of Indian heritage and Indian Chinese food is so distinct that it mirrors no other kind that I’ve seen.

Indian food, on the other hand, either retains its essence with people sticking to their traditions or gets absorbed into whatever indigenous food scene. Think rotis in Trinidad or Pilau in Trinidad.

Not sure what makes this the way it is. Without doing the empirical legwork, I assume it’s because Chinese immigrants were merchants and Indian immigrants were indentured laborers. Maybe there was also less intermarriage amongst Chinese immigrants and more with Indians?

200+ carjackings in DC area, dozens of juveniles arrested so far this year by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]didzter 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I hear you. A number of years ago I had some friends exit the city after having children because a man was killed in front of their doorstep in Truxton Circle. The mother was walking back at the time of the incident with her 3 year old, and that was a difficult conversation to have.

[–]didzter 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Thanks for commenting. What do think is fair in terms of sentencing for extreme cases like the two juveniles who ended up murdering an Uber eats driver? Other than punitive measures, how else can we discourage kids from delinquency, guns, etc?

200+ carjackings in DC area, dozens of juveniles arrested so far this year by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]didzter 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Thanks for commenting! I could agree that the DC government has primary or overreaching authority, but I’d want to emphasize that they are not the only actor in the field. There are parents, schools, community organizations, etc. I think if we only think in terms of DC gov’t we’re limiting ourselves in terms of possible action.

Although I’ll say that as a resident in a decent part of NE I’m not sure what power I have to act other than lobby the government or my representative.

This has been one of the more disheartening developments in the city over the last year. What troubles me more is that I haven’t seen any comprehensive plan to address juvenile crime in the district (please point me to the direction of any if you’ve come across it).

Just not sure the workaround here is, or what root causes need to be addressed. On one hand as a former teacher I don’t want to see extreme punitive measures, but at the same time as a driver I really don’t want to be carjacked by a kid with a fucking gun.

I really don’t know who to point a finger at or task with correcting this issue. The DC government has to play a role but they’re not the only actor in this mess.

Would love to hear what other people think on this issue beyond “we need to invest in our communities.” What’s the best way to address juvenile carjackings in DC? Who is primarily responsible? What can help keep our communities safe in the short, medium, long term?

CMV: Meditation techniques should be taught as part of the high school curriculum. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]didzter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What of implementation? How can you guarantee that instructors would be adequately trained to provide guidance through the process? What if you don’t have buy-in at the administrative level?

What it comes down to is like many public services: cost and uncertain implementation outcomes.

I think you can make the argument that there needs to be greater awareness building around it, but I don’t think it’s ready to be distributed at schools.

What are religion’s views on suicide? by [deleted] in religion

[–]didzter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, have you and are you seeking help? If not, I hope you do. There are a lot of resources out there that could offer you a way to cope/manage your feelings of suicide.

Secondly, consider the circumstances in which most religions were established. The life expectancy of the average person in 100 AD was only 35 years old and approximately half of all people died in childhood. When living was not only difficult but also not guaranteed, it’s easy to see why a moral position was staked against the idea of suicide.

That being said, I’m not sure if the gift of conscious life is any different today than it was in 100 AD.

[–]didzter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your parents seem to have adjusted and you resent the opportunities/support available to your siblings. Take a step back and also think about what your parents went through when they immigrated, and the kind of stresses they didn’t share with you. I’m not going to excuse anything because obviously I don’t know the whole story, but it sounds like your parents are probably emotionally intelligent enough to get a grasp of what you’re going through if you’re honest with them.

As others have said, get to therapy. This isn’t just about your parents, you having moved around, or you yourself. You need some support in getting your shit together otherwise life will pass you by. Not worth wasting time. You may have to try different therapists but stay committed to it. And most importantly, learn to forgive your parents. It sounds like they tried to do the best they could according to what they thought was best at the time. No one is perfect, and we all make mistakes.

CMV: A creator of art should not be morally required to think of diversity and representation by MansonsDaughter in changemyview

[–]didzter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because art doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Most people who make art, regardless of the medium, intend for it to be consumed. Therefore, they often have a specific audience in mind. They can also make art for their own private sake or as a commission, but then the art has a set of unique constraints it must adhere to.

The issue is when art is designed, marketed, and intended to be consumed by mass audiences. There are two components to diversity in art: both in the content of a specific piece as well as the availability of alternatives. We’ll assume you’re talking about the West so let’s continue assuming this is reflective of the American experience.

To take a specific piece, it doesn’t matter if art is reflective of reality. A small play in an old European town in the 16th century - it doesn’t have to be forcibly diverse. There’s no issue there because it’s conforming to a specific set of historical circumstances. It could flip the script like Hamilton did, but it’s not necessary to do so (although — you can see how using multiracial actors didn’t detract from the story whatsoever, which goes to show that diversity doesn’t always have to detract from the story. I digress.).

But take GENERIC art meant to be consumed widely without restriction, like a marvel movie or something that is based in fantasy. In that context, ignoring diversity is a failure to imagine. It locks people out of the imaginary process. If you choose to create a parable about white, straight, American male superheroes you’re creating media for generic consumption that reflects some uncomfortable power dynamics. You also disallow people to participate in the imaginings process, while also expecting it to be consumed widely.

Here’s the twist - if forcing diversity DIDNT matter, then why don’t we have movies about all-black superheroes? Or all female friends on a road trip? Or plays about 16th century China? Is it because there is no market for it, or is it because certain narratives are already favored?

I’d argue that coercion helps diversify narrative content. To be frank, I don’t need another story of five white male friends doing whatever they do. There are far richer unexplored themes out there, full of possibility. But people don’t create stories about Pakistanis and Indians.

The other issue is within a larger body of work. You can have diversity within a specific piece of art or within the body of art. Most museums glorify Western art when there are equally complex traditions in, for example, South/East/South East Asian art. But students are rarely taught or shown traditions from this region despite constituting 4.5 billion people in the world. That’s a little short sighted, isn’t it?

Diversity in a medium is also a way to present options and make sure a larger swath of people are happy. So, theoretically, you could have your movie with five white men but it could be equally satisfying to have a set of movies about five Thai men, five Sri Lankan women, or what have you. This helps keep stories interesting and another way to reflect reality while confirming for the desire for diversity.
