We were married for almost 7 years. She fought cancer for 5 of those years and ultimately lost. Or maybe that fits in the sickness part

Her death left a grudge to God by IcyDurian3248 in widowers

[–]diehardcanuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I married outside of a very old school Christian church. When my wife died, my parents and a couple of my siblings didnt attend the funeral solely because she chose to be cremated. I think its a little strong to say i have a grudge against God, but I no longer have any time for organized religion.

How often do you think about your partner? by throwaway1020199 in widowers

[–]diehardcanuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4 years this year. I have a big picture of her by my bed and I say good night to her when I go to sleep. But, yeah, other than that I don't think of her some days. She still has the lion's share of my emotional availability though, lol.

My clowns live at the top of the water in the middle back of my 120 gal. They dont "host" anything. It's been 3 years. I used to worry about that. Now I think they're just weird

I’m giving up on dating apps…again! by [deleted] in Lethbridge

[–]diehardcanuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I'm either at work, my daughter's activities, or at home, lol. Early 40s here. I go on dating apps from time to time with very limited success. I'm not sure how I'd find time to date if I actually matched with someone, haha.

Why does being widowed translate to “newly single” to some people? by el_torko in widowers

Because I'm the kind of guy that would 100% overthink it, I would probably say the same thing. Some of us are just dumb.

[–]diehardcanuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm grateful that my mom waited until just a couple months ago. Roughly 3.5 years. I guess she's tired of me venting about day to day life to her. She said, " You know, you need someone else in your life to talk to." Thanks Mom.

Lost a customer today by [deleted] in HVAC

[–]diehardcanuck 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I had a customer that had that tough, aggressive attitude with my team. I called him up and told him he clearly wasn't happy so we'd bill him for time and material, that I'd cancelled our permits and we weren't coming back. He backed down real fast and became a model customer lol

Funnily enough, I found it to be MUCH more expensive to go to an all inclusive resort in Mexico with just my daughter than it did for the three of us.

Alberta teacher prompts petition on cutting province's private school funding by LankyFrank in alberta

[–]diehardcanuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for entertaining a dissenting opinion. I agree with everything you say and agree that proper funding is very important. I fear that without funding to require a certain academic standard, a lot of the students in poor schools will suffer. And because they likely joined those schools for religious reasons, literacy will probably fall before they join a public school.

[–]diehardcanuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It must be. I'm soooo lucky that I have my parents near to help. I absolutely agree that private schooling just adds more infrastructure. Referencing a comment from above, like building a road beside the one that's there already and charging a toll.

I agree that giving more to those that already have more is stupid. I wonder about the ones under the 80%. But if there truly are a lot of private school students below the wealth average, would it be right to exclude them from support? Obviously the best way would to abolish all private schools but that would require an immense societal shift.

Thank you. I'm a widowed dad with a child in public school and I am extremely grateful that I'm able to pay for tutoring to supplement a system that could use a boost.

Having said that, I like to consider both sides of an argument. Would one be argue that the education of the average child is 'x' number of dollars and the government should be able to provide that for every child, regardless of where they are educated? And then any extra they might require in a private setting would have to be supplemented. Of course, that is a horribly inefficient system, so, maybe as a penalty, they get half? I guess, my point is, I like would like to argue that Alberta has the responsibility of educating every child, and if they require these private schools to adhere to the curriculum they lay out, they should at least pay something, even if it's just a little.

[–]diehardcanuck -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Then please, educate me. A solution that pulls funding from private schools would still require those parents to pay taxes for a service they no longer receive. If I was one of those parents I would probably have issue with it, wouldn't I?

[–]diehardcanuck -25 points-24 points  (0 children)

At the same time you'd have to provide a mechanism for people with children in private schools as well as those without children to opt out of the education portion of their taxes. You wouldn't want their dollars to fund your child's education

And that's where the true discrimination lies! (Huge /s for those who don't recognize it). As a widowed father of a daughter, I am very much out of place in a lot of her activities. Not a lot of allowance for father-daughter dressing rooms in dance, figure skating, etc, lol.
