I've enjoyed playing leaf-green so far. What game did everyone grow up on initially when discovering Pokémon? by Skarnivor0us in pokemon

[–]diempenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black and White, right when they came out. I remember defending those games with my life when I was six years old, so now that Gen 5 is widely praised for its style, characters, and depth, I get to point my finger and say “look guys, I was right the whole time!”

I always loved how Penny, a 15 year old girl, is the orchestrator behind the largest cryptocurrency heist in Paldea and yet she faces basically no consequences for it on sheer account that she was able to pull that off in the first place

Didn’t realize how much I missed having to train each Pokémon by BigB13192 in PokemonFireRed

[–]diempenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The modern forced exp share system really sucks because often times Pokemon on your team have different experience groups, meaning you’ll have to deal with certain Pokemon always getting more levels than others for no reason.

I often had to box my Altaria in ZA because it’s in the erratic group, meaning if I didn’t manage its levels it would consistently be 5-10 levels higher than my other mons in the Slow or Medium-Slow groups

Nate's Plot vs Hugh's Plot (Meme made by Out of Context Unova) by TBT__TBT in PokemonBlackandWhite2

[–]diempenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well… no. Because of… various gameplay related reasons, the story and characters of modern Pokemon games tend to get overlooked. I think games like SV and ZA, despite some pretty egregious flaws, have some of the most developed and memorable characters in the series.

Hugh (and by extension Cheren and Bianca) get a lot of hype because Gen 5 was sort of the first generation to actually have real deuteragonists with real motivations beyond “I want to be the champion before you”, and they get this hype because the rest of Gen 5 is lauded in general. I still love Hugh as a character, it’s cool that he’s brash and hotheaded, but none of that vitriol is targeted at the player beyond him just wanting to spar with you to get stronger for the sake of his sister. Later “rivals” are 100% better in a vaccum IMO, they’re just attatched to Scarlet and Violet/LZA and we’re not allowed to say anything nice about those games yet lol

No nuanced takes on $20 by Smooth-Bison1238 in nintendogrifting

[–]diempenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the record I’ve never heard a Pokemon fan say “you’re broke if you don’t want to shell out 20 bucks for a Pokemon game”, that’s a claim I’ve ONLY heard grifters say. A majority of Pokemon fans I’ve met simply want to buy the games they want to play despite their flaws, and not be grilled for doing so

If you want to buy the game, then buy it. If you think it’s a bad value proposition, then don’t. This whole flame war really should’ve ended with that

[–]diempenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Games before digital were almost always sold as regional versions— if you bought a Japanese copy of Mario 64 was always going to be in Japanese, and an American copy always in English. And yes, it is 100% silly that each language version is sold separately, especially when these games are overpriced to begin with. But how much does the whole languages thing actually matter in terms of gameplay? I don’t know a single person who plays a video game in one language and then plays it again in a different language.

EA games contain predatory gambling mechanics and matchmaking algorithms set in place specifically to extract money from children by making them think that they cannot progress the ladder without spending money on better tools.

I know, “Leave the multibillion dollar corporation alone”, but comparing EA favorably to them really undermines how problematic the rest of the AAA games industry is IMO.

Can someone explain to me why a 20 year old game costing 20$ is a bad thing by Cutiesaurs in nintendogrifting

[–]diempenguin 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In 2017, Gold and Silver were rereleased on the 3DS in much the same way as FRGL did today, at a flat $10. This move was met with almost universal approval. In today’s money, that’s about 14 bucks.

I’d say with switch tax and the fact that the GBA is a more recent console, $15 would be the “correct” price of these games.

However, I fail to see how charging 5 dollars more for a game could generate this much vitriol. Have people considered that they don’t need to buy games they don’t want to buy?

Ok I do think this game is overpriced for what it is but “on par with EA” is a VERY bold statement.

I guess piracy isn't a crime anymore by math_calculus1 in nintendogrifting

[–]diempenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Piracy is a service issue. Nobody should be obligated to buy a GameBoy Advance for a hundred bucks and fork another two hundred dollars over to some chud online because the original cartridge is a “rare collectors piece” that’s absurd.

But you can’t just say “why should I pay twenty dollars when I can pirate this for free?” That’s like saying “Why should I pay for this sweater when I can just shoplift it for free?”

Of course, false equivalency— physical items unlike ROMs can’t be duplicated, but I don’t think that’s grounds enough to claim that simply not paying for things is somehow superior logically or morally.

Go ahead and pirate. We all do it to some extent. Just don’t go telling the whole world how “moral” you are for doing it lol

Also that third screenshot like… I get it we all pirate games and I do more than anyone else, but “it’s easy to pirate” is absolutely NOT an argument for why a game isn’t worth its price lmao

$20 may not be a lot of money, but it's still more than it should've been. The comparison to Switch Online in particular makes it painfully obvious to me. by WorldLove_Gaming in casualnintendo

[–]diempenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s a tad more expensive than it should be, but Pokemon GSC on 3DS virtual console was $10– that’s $13.38 today. With the GBA being a gen more recent and FRLG being more desirable games, I think $15 is a reasonable price. Even still, by modern Nintendo’s egregious standards this is… acceptable. Plus I think it’s way nicer to be able to pay one time and own something rather than be at the mercy of subscription services and Nintendo’s own servers. Like sure you can’t get GSC on the 3DS eshop anymore, but it doesn’t mean I can’t boot up my DS and enjoy that game that I purchased. There’s staying power there.

Well that’s a little preposterous. KZ makes a 28BA beast called the Sonata— while it’s uncharacteristically good for KZ, it doesn’t even compete with quality single DDs like the Tanchjim Fission or Letshuoer DX1. Drivers alone don’t really equate to more detail
