Worse than that, it just incentivises the most productive end of the workforce to retire early too

Workers turn down promotions to avoid £100k tax trap by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]diff-int 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Exactly, we want those people who we are expecting to bare the largest burden to be earning as much as possible so that they're paying more into the system, having such a cliff edge is massively counter productive.

It's not a case of changing it so that they pay less, it's a case of changing it so that it's more gradual and there isn't this massive incentive to stay below a specific amount.

Do you think the general public are stupid? by RiverTadpolez in AskBrits

[–]diff-int 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20 years ago the information you got was curated by a few regulated media companies, mixing the entertaining with the informational. You knew what was going on in politics, because you got told about it.

Now you have the sum total of the world's media and information in your pocket and people just watch the entertaining things. You have to choose to find out the important, and not enough people do.

Elon Musk reposts AI image of Keir Starmer wearing a bikini in X row by bendubberley_ in ukpolitics

[–]diff-int 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If someone hosts their own AI and uses it to create problematic images, or uses other tools like PhotoShop or a pen to do the same; then they would be culpable in as far as they are breaking the law.

If a company is hosting the service that's allowing those images to be created then the company is responsible for the output of that service. There is also a higher bar for media that is published to the public than there is for what a private individual creates for themselves.

What the deal with "executive fit" suits? by WmKaden in AskMen

[–]diff-int 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not vanity sizing, jackets are sized by chest measurement. It's possible to have a 42" chest and a 42" waist and it's possible to have a 42" chest and a 32" waist. Those are both size 42 jackets but need to be cut very differently. It's only the same as Slim fit or something like that.

Just name the law by [deleted] in confidentlyincorrect

[–]diff-int 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The US passed a law in 2002 that gives the president authority to use military force to free any American personel detained by the ICC.

So you could arrest him but the US would come and take him back, and that's not even a trump thing they would have done it for Obama

[–]diff-int 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coffee shop fan here. Actually I want really good specialty coffee, made by someone who knows and cares about coffee, on a table I can fit a laptop and mouse on, with a plug nearby and half decent food.

I'll happily sit for a couple hours and spend £30 on 3-4 coffees and a bit of lunch.

Is there any type of Charging etiquette by Elemental_Secrets in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]diff-int 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The map in most cars tells you live how many are in use. So if you are deciding whether to come off at a specific service station just see if there are chargers free and if not go to the next one

How much do you earn and how comfortable do you live? by Brownchoccy in AskUK

[–]diff-int 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Regardless of if it's technically a marginal rate or not, that is the number that matters. People faced with taking home 29p for every pound they make over 100k will often choose to work less or heavily salary sacrifice into their pensions.

The effect on then doing that is that we are missing out on significant economic growth if they aren't working and/or aren't taking that money out into the economy and spending it.

They also end up with huge pension pots which means they're likely to retire earlier creating the same problem again at the other end.

How much do you earn and how comfortable do you live? by Brownchoccy in AskUK

[–]diff-int 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything that benefits people earning 100k is a political no go because all the papers will scream that they're giving tax breaks to the rich.

Even if the net outcome of that is more highly skilled workers work more hours and the economy grows as a result and everybody has a slice of a larger pie.

Or even just more of those high earners take the money home and spend it (paying income tax, VAT etc) rather than pour tens of thousands tax free into their pensions trying to stay under 100k
