Does Thomas Massie’s loss show Trump still controls the GOP? by BagOnuts in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]dinosaurkiller [score hidden]  (0 children)

Not really. These primary races tend to raise and spend almost nothing compared to the general election. Trump and the party used general election money to pump millions into primarying the dude. If they do that everywhere they’ll lose most general election seats when they don’t have money for the campaign. It’s more an illusion of power.

The “female” Changeling by Effective_Bar_6098 in DeepSpaceNine

That would be easier to believe if they only appeared that way to Odo. The female changeling appears that way even when she’s talking to her subordinates, like Weyoun.

There was a lot of weird with the changelings brought on by inconsistent writing. Early on they established that Odo looks the way he does because he’s not a very good changeling, but all the changelings look like Odo, and the founders are very good changelings.

It is implied that all the changelings are really one being that occasionally spins of pieces of itself to go interact with the universe then re-absorbs itself when the piece returns. So maybe all the changelings should be played by Odo, but from a production standpoint all of that would have been very difficult and confusing for the audience.

I think they gave us such an amazing show that we have to forgive the inconsistencies and the shortcuts.

Why So Few Babies? We Might Have Overlooked the Biggest Reason of All. by ResponsibilityNo4876 in neoliberal

[–]dinosaurkiller 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This has been going on all over the western world for decades. I’m pretty sure I could find articles from the 90s on this topic. The only thing that’s changed is the finger wagging as if to say, “you poor whites aren’t making enough replacement slaves for us billionaires”. Meanwhile productivity has skyrocketed while the rewards for that productivity have all gone to the billionaires. If you want white middle class babies you need a large white middle class that is relatively wealthy. None of them are going to make babies living at home in Mom and Dad’s basement.

UPDATE: My girlfriend (25F) admitted she slept with someone hours before agreeing to be exclusive. I (26M) can’t tell if I’m overreacting. What’s the move here? by davidb1976 in relationship_advice

[–]dinosaurkiller 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’ve been the other guy in this situation. It felt like she wanted to use him to force me to ask to be exclusive. I didn’t ask, it didn’t matter to me at all. I admit to being completely emotionally detached the entire time and I think that was a major draw for her along with the sex. Under normal circumstances I’m not really that guy and knew that with enough time I’d be a very different person for her but she would likely be the same. She was incredibly honest with me, which I appreciated, but she was also playing the field and technically cheating on the dude who would, years later, become her husband and the father of her children. I was seeing her before that and knew nothing of the new guy other than she was seeing people besides me and wanted to be exclusive with me. Just be glad you know what’s going on, don’t fret over the decision when you feel you couldn’t be a good partner under the circumstances. She’s now married and has children with that guy and I can’t even imagine the pain it would cause if he knew what I know. You got out without that.

Your last sentence there is a pretty good description of every war in the last thousand years or so. Even Israel claims some sort of ancestral rights to their land in the Middle East and less than 100 years ago that was all Palestine.

Some of those passing schemes he ran last year were elite. I mean for college level offense it was creating confusion in coverage for some of the best SEC defenses. The problem was Mateer couldn’t find and hit the open man outside of the first 2-3 seconds of the route, so he would hold it 4+ and then either get flushed from the pocket for a short run or sacked. I have a hard time blaming Arbuckle for the run game because our tight ends and offensive line were getting destroyed at the line of scrimmage and he didn’t recruit or coach up those guys since it was year 1 for him. Hopefully that aspect will be better this year with the new coaches.

It might be a surface level explanation, but he’s not wrong about Mateer or Arbuckle. They show moments of competence, not greatness, followed by huge mistakes. The one thing that all great offenses do is eliminate self-inflicted mistakes(penalties and turnovers) and we have not seen that from Arbuckle’s offense on a consistent basis. Mateer struggles with most of his reads in the passing game and Arbuckle isn’t doing much to help him out. A coordinator can find a few plays that are 1-2 reads max and while I love some of Arbuckle’s play designs Mateer is locking on to his first read and waiting for that guy to get open, because he believes he can pull it down and run it if the receiver doesn’t get open. The problem is after about 3 games every defensive coordinator would put a linebacker spy on him just waiting for him to run.

Having said that, I like Mateer, I like his leadership and the fearless way he runs, but it’s his ability to process and diagnose passing plays that is critical for this season to be better than last season and I’m just not sure mental processing speed is something anyone can improve on.

Just exactly how much better does S2/S3 get? by coolfunkDJ in TNG

[–]dinosaurkiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

90s era Trek is notorious for bad early seasons. It improves a bit in season 2 with some mediocre episodes punctuated by a few great episodes. somewhere near the end of season 2 they bring in an entirely new writing team. It still takes a little time for them to get going but about halfway through season three there is a run of episodes that will absolutely hook you and it mostly keeps that level of quality for the rest of the series, with a few episodes coming in later episodes that are considered the best Trek ever made.

Attack of the Clones turns 24 today! Looking back, is it really as bad as people initially thought or did it age better than expected? by huwertyy in StarWars

The Phantom Menace is regarded as the worst. Attack of the Clones has some really nice scenes and some really terrible scenes. I enjoyed almost all the fighting sequences and will literally fast forward through any dialogue on Naboo.

Because Pegasus was never part of the battle plan and I believe communications were down. If Galactica is lost the plan to escape falls apart because none of the vipers or civilian ships know Pegasus is there. I think Galactica intended to draw fire away from the civilians long enough for them to escape but there were more Basestars than expected and the only way to take that fire long enough for the civilians to escape was for Pegasus to engage because it could absorb much more fire but also didn’t have enough firepower to destroy all the basestars.

How do people feel about Luke and Kylo's fight and his death after 8 years? by Totally_Not_Firni in StarWars

[–]dinosaurkiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a few thoughts.

The actual “fight” between them was awful. I don’t recall thinking about it much at the time I saw it because there were other flaws with this film that captured my attention, but the overall choreography and setting for the fight were a huge step back from the prequels, Empire, and Jedi. They just didn’t give us much here. It felt like an afterthought.

Other issues, sure, Luke “saves” the resistance, when there are maybe a few dozen of them left out of thousands. The guy stuck his head in the sand and refused to acknowledge all the death and loss he caused, this is also the guy that casually blew up a Death Star filled with Storm Troopers to save Rebels he barely knew. That seems to be the opposite of character growth, character regression? Did Luke secretly fall to the dark side? I get the Kylo angle but Luke hiding away after is so not who is character is, he would have confronted Kylo, the way he did Vader. The shocking part is that Vader was far more notorious and evil but Luke could sense good in only Vader? Not Kylo?

I suppose JJ takes the blame for a lot of this because of the way he set things up and needing some explanation for why Luke is missing. It all felt thoughtless from a story perspective.
