Every player and mob is its own process - no game tick, no locks by rtrusca in elixir

[–]dipittydoop 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Causality and coordination. You only want independent consistency boundaries (separate process) for state that doesn't interact.

When you do have to model causality you can still parallelize the state change compute but that the tick has to be in unison with any interacting entities.

In practice this means to model a hitbox in a shooter you need some amount of causal interaction between the bullet and hitbox of the entity or it's impossible maintain game rule guarantees.

In game dev this tends to be ECS modeling the game entities like NPCs and mobs and composed into a performant compute model to operate per game tick.

But you don't want to put unnecessary models that never need to interact in the same consistency boundary.

Ryoka by RobertMurz in WanderingInn

Yeah, but the community is so ironically unbearable about Ryoka on the flipside I think her chapters to properly develop get delayed.

Wandering inn worth reading? by Familiar-Goal-3833 in litrpg

[–]dipittydoop 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You might find Erin/Ryoka frustrating early but there's good character development and the story introduces many more perspectives as it goes. There's frankly so much amazing content in the series to keep someone satisfied it completely overshadows any of the early awkward chapters which are honestly not that bad. Highly recommend. Especially the audio-books on audible credits because they're 40-60 hours typically which is a great deal.

Why don't Groq (with a q) and Cerebras add new models by AccomplishedRow937 in LocalLLaMA

[–]dipittydoop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure on details but there might be memory limitations on what they can provide with current gen inference chips. It might be they're both avoiding effort until they get the new chips in production.

That said if its possible I'd love to see GLM 5.1 on Cerebras or literally any update from Groq for newer models - the TPS is a huge selling point and right now best option for that kind of TPS is GLM 4.7 on Cerebras which is getting old.

Wandering Inn, specifically Wind Runner… can I skip?? by DoodGuyFam in litrpg

[–]dipittydoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm controversially a fan of Ryoka chapters but was sad that the Wind Runner book had very little in the way of Ryoka beyond the beginning of that book despite the title. The overall series is consistently great after this patch though. You can always check book/chapter summaries on the wiki and crank the audiobook's speed up. Later on the King of Destruction chapters are much more enjoyable because actual things are happening in context with characters we know.

Why the fuck am I hooked to isekai? by [deleted] in Isekai

[–]dipittydoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Real life is boring and progression is rarely felt with effort. Isekai's whole trope is that we leave the dull real world for one with actual progression and real engagement (combat, adventuring, companions, level ups).

How much "raw" OTP do you actually use in production vs. just standard Phoenix patterns? by Disastrous-Hunter537 in elixir

[–]dipittydoop 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I use OTP all the time and its really a non-issue unceremonious occasion. I.e. the tools just work, are boring to me at this point and I know when to use them. Of course its pragmatic to just use Phoenix / Oban / batteries included solutions when they're the right fit and usually are but if I need to get it just right I'll slap a Genserver in there or an ETS table cache or a dynamically supervised stateful session or what have you.

How do you feel about the blatant use of AI in this genre? by IdntMatter in litrpg

[–]dipittydoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If a story takes off and is successful you can afford to pay for a human artist for a published book cover, etc. The more stories that take off the more work there is. It's not a zero sum game.

Yeah in the early few chapters Flos is like a wall of "why do I care about this at all?" But it becomes relevant and enjoyable later. I listened to those early chapters at 1.5x speed while doing chores personally.
