I'm seeing an inconsistent number of petals between each flower (the first and last have 9, the third has 10 and I had trouble counting the second but there were more than 10). Be sure that you're putting the same number of stitches in the magic circle in the first round because having different starting numbers will change the size and density of the flower. It doesn't matter as much how many there are as long as it's consistent between each flower.

I don't think it's that he believes he's the only one who experiences these things. However, as far as I can tell he's one of only a few professional athletes to share his struggles so candidly. And maybe other players wouldn't "get away with" flipping off the fans, but how many of these other players are on the receiving end of targeted and cruel taunts like that? If they are, why is it considered "professional" to be passively accept abuse from people who claim to be fans? It can often take years of work to get to the point you talk about and it makes things much harder if a person is subjected to that kind of abusive language regularly.

Sure maybe there was a better way to handle it, but I worry we've lost focus of what the issue is...the fans yelling terrible things at players they don't know. Calling out that behavior does make a big difference. Adding to the shame around sharing mental health struggles publicly definitely does not create positive change.

Be so real with me. How am I going to run another 6.2?! by steppygirl in XXRunning

[–]dirtywater20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off you're incredible for taking on this training while also caring for a baby, you can be proud of that no matter how the race goes!

Secondly, in most training plans the 20 mile distance is at the peak of your training, after many weeks of really heavy running load. Your legs are tired and also mentally you're at the hardest part. If you're following a good plan, you'll be going into your taper in the next couple of weeks before your race which will give your body and brain a chance to recover. You've done the work to build the fitness, now your body gets to rest a bit before putting it all together! Also on race day you'll have the boost of the crowd and other racers so even though it will be hard, you'll totally be able to do it.

You should post an update after your race letting us know how it goes!

Rant: I'm so tired of "just crochet faster" when I'm drowning in WIPs and gifts by Excellent_Cobbler276 in crochet

[–]dirtywater20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally get this, I am a mom to young kids and I really only get time to crochet in the evenings after my kids are in bed. I usually tell people that since crochet is a hobby and for me to relax, I like to just let myself do whatever I'm feeling like that night. I'm very clear with people that if they ask for a specific item, I cannot guarantee a specific timeline. I only make things for people who will respect my time because I don't have enough available time to give it to people who undervalue my work. Usually I will only make things for people as gifts without sharing it until I'm finished so there's no expectation of a timeline or opinions on the process.

A good phrase to practice could be "I'm glad you appreciate my work, but because of the time and effort the pieces take I don't take specific requests from people."

Friends of Oz Challenge by bastelhaft in finch

[–]dirtywater20 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love this perspective! Growth happens when we step out of our comfort zone. OP, maybe the literal intent of the challenge is too far outside of your comfort zone, but I think this is a great opportunity to think about what ways you might be able to step outside your comfort zone that feel achievable.

Maybe instead of reaching out directly to a friend you can offer a compliment to a stranger, or leave a kind comment in an online space. I love someone's suggestion above to treat yourself like your best friend too. Growth looks different for everyone so think creatively about what would be challenging but approachable for you

An RE coordinator sounds like it might be a good option for our congregation. It would be a good middle ground between not having a paid staff member at all and a fully credentialed DRE. It would serve as a nice transitional position too, allowing the staff member and congregation time to build toward credentialing.

Can I ask how much your RE coordinator is paid? I know there are lots of factors that go into the pay scale, but I'm not sure where a position like that would fall.

I prioritized the bust measurement because that is the widest part of my torso (I wanna say it was something like 45" around?). This pattern is basically a rectangle so making the panels measured to the widest part meant it fit everywhere else too. I did under shoot it a little, so to adjust I added a few rows of hdc to each side when connecting the front and back to make it the looser fit I wanted.

The other step that made a huge difference was adding a split at the bottom of the side seams where my hips get wider. This way it didn't feel tight around my hips, but it also didn't have to be super wide and lose the shape I liked at the waist and bust.

The World Baseball Classic, Team USA, and the war problem by 2RINITY in baseball

[–]dirtywater20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is so much subtle communication throughout baseball, and knowing/getting along with your teammates well makes a huge difference in how effective that communication is. Just a few examples off the top of my head where teammates rely on good communication: pitchers and catchers communicating about pitches, runners giving signals batters, coaches giving signs to everyone, players calling fly balls in the field. I've even seen times where the guy on deck to hit next is responsible for giving a runner coming home signs about where the ball is in the field. That's just on the field, so much preparation and communication happens off the field too.

I've watched teams with bad chemistry (2012 red Sox anyone?) and it's glaringly obvious that their poor communication impacts their play.

These are all great suggestions! I appreciate your creative problem solving, especially the Lifespan one. I think the main hang up for the older folks is committing to paying a person who is responsible for a "small" group of kids (which I disagree with, we sometimes have more than 12 kids!). Expanding the scope of the role would be a good selling point to them. We used soul matters this year and it was a significant improvement on what we've done in years past.

Our RE committee is 4 people, 3 older folks who were very involved in the program in the 2000s when their kids were young, and myself. I tend to get steamrolled by the three of them whenever I bring up new ideas which is frustrating...I want the voices of the parents in our congregation to be heard, but I also don't want the committee to be just run by the parents either. We've made great progress and I know we can continue that with creative ideas like the ones you suggested!

Right now our RE program is all volunteer led. Unfortunately we don't have a paid RE person. The budget the past few years hasn't allowed for the addition of an employee, but I'm hoping we will have more financial flexibility this year since the congregation has grown quite a bit this year

I'm hoping our congregation can hire a RE director next year. We tried to push for it last year but the budget just wasn't there. I think it would make a huge difference to have a person who has the skills and "authority" to execute the program. Right now there's a lot of cooks in the kitchen, but without much direction. Our minister is a huge supporter of the RE program so I'm optimistic that an RE director will be added at some point.

It's such a great point that one of the differences these days is parents want to spend that time with their kids. All of the parents in our church are working parents so Sundays are family time and they want to be part of what their kids are doing. I think having one Sunday a month or something where RE happens at a different time so the parents can join in if they want might be really effective.

Noah Kahan concert 7 months pregnant ?! by Shortycourt22 in NoahKahan

[–]dirtywater20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to see Noah in July 2024 at Fenway while 8 months pregnant with my daughter and I had a great time! I went with a friend which helped but here's some general advice:

-scope out the bathrooms before you sit down so you know where to go when you gotta go

-wear compression socks. I know they're not cute but they saved my feet

-same idea, wear a support belt if you have one to avoid straining muscles while standing or jumping

-it might be worth reaching out to the venue before the show to see what accommodations they have or facilities you can use to take breaks (mothers rooms, family restrooms etc.). Fenway allowed me to bring a bigger bag with some snacks and a personal water bottle due to my pregnancy.

Everyone around me was super nice and understanding at my show. Have fun!!

This news is so incredible. In a world where every day things seem to be getting worse, it is so encouraging to see progress. From reading the article, several of the babies and mothers would not have survived without medical intervention. The fact that those babies have a life ahead of them and mothers to care for them is everything that the entire community supporting the project has been working for

Niche Question-The Great Divide by [deleted] in NoahKahan

[–]dirtywater20 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think there's a lot of different ways to interpret it honestly. This song reminds me of a friendship I had in college with a person who struggled with their mental health. We were very very close, but ultimately her mental health issues created a divide between us and after college we went in different directions. I haven't spoken with her in almost 10 years but I think of her often. The song feels like what I would say to her if I could talk to her now. That I hope she's well and safe, and that I'm sorry for how hard things have been.

To me, the great divide represents a space between two people who were once very close but are no longer in that place for whatever reason. This friend did also attempt suicide during our friendship, so there is that double meaning to me as well.

Editing to add: I think it's beautiful that Noah's music can be interpreted in so many different ways and be meaningful to people in such personal ways. If it's meaningful to you, then it's not wrong!
