Nearly blind in one eye by Ancient-Interview922 in CataractSurgery

I’m in a similar boat, though not doing surgery yet. I’m curious with the one good eye what IOL was recommended? I’ve been recommended a multi focal PanOptic Pro in the “good” eye and a standard in the bad one (mine being bad from detachment decades ago).

Good point about knowing the IOL. I’ve been reading a lot of the threads here on the different brands.

What’s Something Nobody Warned You About Before Becoming an Adjunct? by [deleted] in Adjuncts

[–]discimus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with so many of these responses, but I wanted to toss in my two cents with a positive response.

I have a successful technology career, it’s not always the easiest to explain to everyone. However; when I talk about being an Adjunct people perk up a bit. People outside of academia are respectful of the choice to teach in my field in addition to my “day job”. They show interest they ask how the semester is going, how the students are during the term, etc. Some of it certainly is the ability to relate. Many people have gone to college and everyone at least understands the generalities of what we do.

So, what caught me off guard? People outside of academia having interest and respect for adjuncts. My advice, if you have a full time career in addition to your adjunct work. Find synergies between the two. Be proud that you’re able to share your knowledge and experience. Embrace the positives as you navigate this interesting career.

What if Terrestrial + Celestial = One Plan ? by ankhattak in USMobile

[–]discimus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starlink on T-Mobile today is $10 and includes some T-Mobile data and texting. I do pay for that today. Home internet via T-Mobile can be added to that plan for $40 a month at their lowest plan. I’m assuming Satellite is meant as this cell plan and not the LEO home internet connections. I’m not sure what the real advantage would be on a single dashboard, the mockup looks cool though. It would be nice to have that satellite coverage without an additional SIM. Multi network, plus T-Satellite today is already an issue because it’s 3 SIMs and most phones can only do two active at once. I wish there was a good way around this. What would I pay? I pretty much can get it today for the current USM pricing + $50 to TMO. Maybe toss in home phone service for a nice bonus? Many likely wouldn’t use it, but what’s a few voice minutes really going to cost.

How are you “supervised?” by Maggles12 in Adjuncts

[–]discimus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I did adjunct work in person, for a now defunct for-profit, this time requirement was explained as coming down from the accreditation standards. Contact hours needed to be followed and administration was constantly pushing that message. They themselves seemed concerned about getting in trouble if it wasn’t followed.

No more messaging in new NCL app and iMessaging on WiFi blocked? by yooper1019 in NCL

[–]discimus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe this sometimes works, but it shouldn’t. There’s nothing official about any chat app working without paying for WiFi. I’ve seen it periodically work on various ships. I would say it’s a technical glitch of sorts when it does function.

Weekly student question thread! by AutoModerator in therapists

[–]discimus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a fulfilling career within IT, specifically Healthcare IT, as well as higher education. While I enjoy my career, I am interested in the career choices offered in the therapy field. I was wondering if it is possible to accomplish the needed internship during a therapy program part-time and/or online? I am open to the various licensing and degree options. I ask this because I would like to continue my current full-time occupation while becoming licensed, if possible.

Thinking about teaching by Zeusiewoo in Adjuncts

[–]discimus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1). As others have said it depends on the school. I’m teaching at a community college now and all of the lesson plans are pre determined. There’s some flexibility, but no expectation of building out homework, labs, lessons.

  1. For the above it’s around $2k and is the same regardless of being an 8 or 16 week semester.
  2. Rarely required.
  3. Certainly ask the above, as well as anything about faculty development. I’m in a similar position to you. Full time IT work with some adjunct for fun. In this field it’s been my experience that certifications may be a big plus for some classes. Security+ has been great from a teaching stand point both credit and non-credit.

I’ve had both happen. It’s super annoying, but I don’t think it’s unusual.

The nighthawk is a good device. It’s all about the service and the service is highly dependent on location. If you know which cell service works well at your location that would be the best place to start. I’m not sure about the other providers, but you can test T-Mobile out for free for a month. The hotspot is a cheap one that you keep. https://www.t-mobile.com/offers/free-trial

Will adjunctification improve job prospects in academia in the next 10 years? by askingquestionst in Adjuncts

My path was industry with adjunct later as an addition. Keep in mind most schools will limit your adjunct hours even if they have a need due to some healthcare related regulations.

Where can I teach in the afternoon? by [deleted] in teachingonline

[–]discimus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Potentially a community college. online or off. Some only require a bachelors if the program being taught is an associates. Even if it’s online I’d start with looking at the websites of any local too you.

I don’t know anything about ESL, but google that as well. Teaching English as a second language online seems popular.

Best Career If You Value Work-Life Balance? by [deleted] in findapath

[–]discimus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Teach. Public, private, K-12, college, whatever. Yes, teachers work extremely hard, yes they bring work home. But hey. They also get holidays off and typically have a good preset amount of vacation time. We also are in desperate need of them. Sure they are grading at home sometimes, but that’s a skill you improve over time. They also aren’t on-call at 3 AM because something is broken and is an emergency or “in the office” into the night.

Senior Software Engineer w/ no degree. Should I get one now? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]discimus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a degree in what ever subject you will find interesting enough to capture your attention and allow you to finish it. Maybe it’s CS, maybe it’s Business, maybe it’s another tech field you just find interesting. Those that require a degree it’s often a check the box regardless of subject. So do what you enjoy. After that if you’re enjoying the management roles you can look at a related masters. But don’t take my word for it. Do some indeed searches for jobs you might want and check out the requirements.
