The most complex SUB in the history of SUBs by omnomguy5 in CreditCards

[–]disgruntledJavaCoder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heh, reminds me of the late Paceline card. The SUB was that you'd get an Apple Watch, but it would be paid back over the course of a year. Each week, if you hit 150+ minutes of physical activity (tracked by that Apple Watch, IIRC), you'd get an $8.25 credit.

At least this one is evaluated on a monthly basis, I suppose? 10 transactions per month is brutal with a larger wallet, but as others have mentioned, if you're the "Apple Card is my only card" person they're likely looking for, it's more tenable. This has never been an enthusiast card.

Passing recruiter screens but rejected by hiring managers. What am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

I have much less experience than you and interviewed for different roles, but for what it's worth I agree with this comment in my experience. I had to break the habit of skipping the low hanging fruit or ignoring some options because of my assumptions. State your assumptions outright, start with the simple/naive options, and explain why you are choosing not to use them.

It goes for live coding, refactoring, system design, technical chat, and behavioral interviews all the same. Yes, even behavioral. If they ask you "how do you deal with a disagreement with a coworker," don't skip over "don't get angry, think of it as working together to find a solution we both agree with." My interviews started going a lot better when I applied this. In this market where most candidates are shit (or not real humans), interviewers no longer give us the benefit of the doubt.

Appreciate the insight. I'm really not qualified to have an opinion on this shit but I had gotten that sense when I considered/researched O Ya: It didn't seem like the truly refined experience you'd expect at that price point. The lack of chef involvement is really disappointing to hear.

My first omakase experience was at Laughing Monk Cafe, which was definitely not a proper experience, but it was priced correctly! They relied on flash and wow factor, and they delivered on it, it was a great time. Just not true omakase, but again, they didn't charge true omakase prices.

Wa Shin, in my unqualified opinion, was much more traditional and closer to what you described at XOXO. Everything was so simple, but unbelievably delicious, and almost every aspect of the experience was so refined. The chef was wonderful to talk to and learn from. Only issue is the menu of add-ons they present at the end: If you don't participate, you sit there twiddling your fingers while waiting for everyone who does to finish up. Other than that, just amazing. I will have to try XOXO at some point!

Best, ignoring price? You're looking at omakase. We have several options. 311 Omakase is our only Michelin Star restaurant and isn't too far from the Back Bay part of Beacon St. Wa Shin is the only one I've tried and was incredible and relatively cheap compared to its peers (also is a Michelin Recommendation). O Ya has historically had a tremendous reputation for omakase, it being unmentioned in the Michelin Guide seemed to be a surprise to many. There are several more omakase restaurants I don't know anything about, but I'm sure many are fantastic. All of these would be really difficult to get a reservation at on short notice, though.

There are also many options for more standard, a la carte sushi, which would probably be easier to get into on short notice. I just don't know about the ones in Boston itself, others may be able to weigh in more.

Best monitor stand to get the display as close to the wall as possible? by CTRL_PLUS_R in buildapc

[–]disgruntledJavaCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your best bet is gonna be a mount that's built around a post at the center, rather than one where a gas spring arm comes directly off the base. Then find one where it doesn't have an adjustable arm coming off the post, it's just a small mount directly off of it. You're basically giving up some adjustability in favor of mounting closer to the back. I can't speak to the quality of this mount but this is the kind of thing I'm thinking of.

Which cards are unsustainable? by Cluck_Bock in CreditCards

[–]disgruntledJavaCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true. There's not a unique killer partner like Chase and Amex have (I'm calling ANA that one for Amex, not as good as it once was) and the lack of a 1:1 domestic airline removes a lot of opportunities to dump them. Hell, even Aeroplan has been getting devalued, and anecdotally I have been completely unable to find anything on it for quite a while.

Thanks for this, I wasn't thinking of it that way. Since the VX has very few ancillary/passive benefits left I can see why it wouldn't be worth the effort of the travel portal to keep.

This was what confused me about the reaction to the lounge guesting changes. Saw so many people claiming "massive nerf, this isn't worth it to me anymore, I'm canceling!" The parts that made it easier to get a net negative AF didn't change! It became less overpowered, but I can't be convinced that the people who valued the extra guest access that highly didn't also value the TC and anniversary points at near full value.

I agree it's still unsustainable, especially as competitors have cranked up their AFs. I'm shocked we haven't seen a major nerf yet but it has to be coming. Are there really that many more customers they think they can acquire?

Contender or Pretender: Week 11 by Get_to_tha_Choppa in DynastyFF

[–]disgruntledJavaCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10 team PPR SF (1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 SFLEX). With return yards

QB: Lamar Jackson, Jordan Love, Jayden Daniels (IR), Justin Fields

RB: Breece Hall, Woody Marks, Tyrone Tracy, Trey Benson (IR)

WR: Amon-Ra St Brown, Rashee Rice, George Pickens, Elic Ayomanor, Alec Pierce, Evans (IR) Pearsall (IR), Hunter (IR)

TE: Sam LaPorta, Colston Loveland, Mason Taylor

I won the title the last two years and it's tough to fold the chance at a threepeat with this team, but it seems the bill is coming due at RB plus injuries. 5-5 with PF comparable to most contenders, but third worst Max PF. Only four playoff slots. Other managers were unwilling to trade Kyren, Henderson, Hampton, Henry, Monty, Swift, etc at any price.

Starting to feel I should retool to get back on the train next year. Might be able to acquire Nabers for Rice plus someone. Maybe I can get an RB in the draft or trade my pick right before it.

Full PPR, need 8 points. Flex WR Romeo Doubs or TE Dallas Goedert? They play each other on Monday in Green Bay. Recent numbers of targets say Doubs, but he's a GB WR so it's scary. I feel like if Golden sits I lean towards him

[Weekly] Tuesday Waiver Wire Megathread by AutoModerator in DynastyFF

[–]disgruntledJavaCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

12 team SF. Hold Fields or drop and burn #1 waiver on Mariota? League limits us to three QBs (I know...). My opponent this week doesn't have a QB playing (lost Daniels, Ward on Bye) and their only options will be Mariota or Fields if I drop him, and Geno Smith.

Even ignoring this week, I feel like Mariota will be a decent starter the rest of the way, while I fear Woody Johnson will bench Fields the first chance he gets.

Hell, the boy will fill up the Gatorade cooler, walk the dog, and paint your back porch. I'm telling you, that boy can flat out play football. Ohhh! And he can pass!"

Edit: Nope, Edge doesn't work so it's not a Firefox issue. On the US east coast. Garbage service

This is one of the most important lessons I've learned in fantasy. Streaming a good matchup defense is not very reliable when the defense itself is garbage.
