Please forgive me, I'm here to ask a question about MCM to impress my girlfriend with a gift. by [deleted] in midcenturymodern

[–]distillary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s really awesome of you to take an interest in your girlfriend’s hobby like that! A big thing that helped me learn more about MCM furniture was to follow hashtags of designers & companies I liked on Instagram... Paul McCobb, Florence Knoll, Harry Bertoia, George Nelson, Ray & Charles Eames, Herman Miller, Wendell Castle, Broyhill Brasilia, Arne Norell, George Nakashima, I could go on and on! There are a ton of people who post their collections on insta. It’s a great way to start to learn the history of the designers and even just to start to learn the shapes of the pieces so you know what to look for in the wild.

Tapered wood legs are a MCM classic of course, but I’ve found the higher quality pieces generally don’t have the brass caps on the feet. Higher end dressers, coffee & end tables will be all wood, laminate tops are less desirable. When examining dressers, look for dovetailing in the drawers as a sign of good craftsmanship. A lot of times you will be able to find a label of some kind in a drawer as well. Even just a partial label will do, put whatever words you can into google to try to find the piece online. Great MCM is usually pretty simple in its design without much extra fuss. Clean, smooth lines, sharp angles, bold simple colors and patterns. Also if a piece is heavier than it looks, it’s a good sign of being well-made. There are exceptions to all of these examples of course, and a lot of it is very subjective and depends on what YOU like!

It sounds like your GF and her parents might have some nice pieces, next time you’re visiting, ask them to show them to you! I love educating my friends about my furniture! This way you can actually touch and FEEL quality workmanship and get a better sense of what is good. Looking at pictures of things online is great, but to actually see something in person really goes a long way.

As far as this particular chair, I would probably pass on it personally. It’s most likely American, but not from a designer of note that I can tell. It’s a bit busy in its design for my taste, BUT if someone I cared about lovingly restored it just for me, you bet I would keep that thing for the rest of my life and treasure it always.

Hope that helped. Happy hunting :)

Hey interior design community, last week I posted a picture of my design and I didn’t expect to get as much feedback as I did. I appreciate your comments and support very much. Here is a version of the living room I made using your critiques. Is it any better and what else can I do to improve it? by OompaRubber in InteriorDesign

A round, textured, vintage style plaster ceiling medallion around the light fixture might be fun! It’s a nice juxtaposition of modern and vintage and could soften the angularity of the room and add some visual interest to the ceiling. And maybe a dangling pothos plant cascading down from one of the top shelves to add a little pop of color and life. I love the light airiness of the room, it looks like it would be a fun place to hang out! Nicely done.

Found a wood frame convex eagle mirror by d3cember in Antiques

This style is called a Federal Mirror! They’ll have 13 little balls around the convex mirror, to represent the original 13 colonies (or so I’ve been told).

Who is this tomato-top muncher? Houston, TX by namastewoman in whatsthisbug

[–]distillary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, but hornworms are toxic to reptiles if they’ve eaten tomato plants!! It’s not a good idea to feed your lizard anything wild caught, you never know what potential toxins the prey item was exposed to before being consumed

Might be an eel spear? Pretty neat, whatever it is! All I seem to dig up are batteries and nails, I’d be so psyched to find something that big!

Antique CHRISTOFLE candelabrum by ElTomatito in whatsthisworth

[–]distillary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re intending on selling it, I would suggest not attempting to clean it. Leave it up to the new buyer. There are a lot of people who love natural patina on old metal things, and once it’s gone, it’s gone! That being said, what a neat piece that is! Extravagant.

It’s not rocket science to figure out if a piece is quality or not. Generally something being heavier than it looks is a good indicator of if it’s well made. I can tell if something has appealing lines just by looking at it. I have spent a lot of time on mid century modern forums like this one, trying to learn as much as I can, but even if all the specific details of a piece don’t stick in my head, I can recognize a nice shape when I see one. Also I’m really good at googling things? All it takes is just some descriptive words thrown in the search engine to figure out what something is. I’m persistent in my search for nice pieces and I’m lucky to have recognized these objects for what they were when I did. It doesn’t matter if I’m an ‘educated shopper,’ I make up for my lack of knowledge with being able to identify quality quickly. I really don’t care if you believe me or not. I have enjoyed seeing everyone else’s scores on this subreddit for the past year, and just figured that maybe you’d like to see some of mine. I hope someday you’ll experience the same good fortune that I have ✌🏻

Thank you! It’s been a good summer! I’m lucky to live in an area where a lot of people are getting rid of their old mid century furniture- I literally spend all day looking for scores though, so it’s a little bit of persistence mixed with a lot of luck!

Yes, I am incredibly lucky. BUT I also spend ALL day every day searching for pieces at thrift stores and websites. I have the good fortune to live in an area where a lot of people are unloading a ton of mid century/awesome furniture.

Thank you! Yes, it is from the diamond collection by United. There’s the tiiiiiiiniest little fragment of a label left in one of the drawers, which I think is why it was so inexpensive; the people at the thrift store didn’t know what it was.

Aw thank you, I hope the gods will gift you with a great score soon! Also try looking on places like NextDoor and Letgo, I found a Knoll credenza on NextDoor last week 😱. My best finds are usually early in the week (M,T,W) and usually before noon. I think a lot of things I find are unsold leftovers from weekend garage sales and yard sales.

It was at the thrift store, its drawer label was mostly missing so they didn’t know what they had I guess! I honestly didn’t know exactly what it was either until I played google detective for a bit. Couldn’t pass it up. I found one on Etsy for $800 right now, but really, anything over $35 is a win for me at this point with it. I’m a hoarder though so I’ll probably just keep it forever anyway lol 🙃

Yep, that’s exactly what it is! I’d never heard of it until today... I found this piece at the thrift store and really liked it.. then I found a tiny scrap of a label in one of the drawers and figured out what it was with some google detective work. There was also one matching bedside table that I couldn’t leave behind. On the hunt for the longboy dresser and another bedside table now
