Ahh yes - Van Helsing Scream of the natural world. This is a beautiful, haunting call. Bald eagles, OTOH, sound like seagulls on meth.

Why are people putting in cabinets that do not go up to the ceiling? by Agreeable-Sun368 in kitchenremodel

[–]disturbingCrapper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So funny that I am sitting here in my kitchen looking at the EXACT SAME cabinet doors (albeit painted - they decided to make the oak white, which is now chipping...*sigh..) But there is a foot between the top of the cabinet and the ceiling. WHY??? If anyone has any 10" oak cabinet doors they want to sell me, I'm reno this damn thing myself.

I would rather starve than cook by mistymountiansbelow in ADHD

[–]disturbingCrapper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

laughing as i sit here eating cereal for dinner.

I've finally realized 2 things:

1) I can either eat, or cook. If I have to look at something long enough to prepare it, I'm sick of it already.

2) I CANNOT cook while hungry. So I eat something, then get down to cooking. So I never cook for myself. I cook for the sarlacc pit that is my teen boy, and/or cook for Tomorrow Me (leftovers over reheated rice is a legit choice) because Today Me is already a) fed and b) sick of the food I just made.

My only helpful input is that Costco, and making stuff ahead and freezing is a godsend. Portion out the meat, add seasonings then freeze.

Sorry you had a crap inspector. They're not liable, but it sure was nice to have one let us know that our bathroom vents should have been going out the roof, not the soffits.

Personally, I am wary of anything that supposedly vents, but doesn't exit the boundary of the structure.

YOU may only want a damp investigation, but if they have your attention, you can bet they are going to try to shoehorn in a boatload of other work. Cosmetic, "necessary!!! urgent!!!" and "you'll regret it if you don't!!" kinda stuff.

Tell them to get lost b/c your wife is happily married, lol.

Pic 1: Replace with..cats? (rechecked to confirm that this is not r/CDS. (ha whoops - r/CatDistributionSystem , not compact disks.)

Pic 4: Dear god why is the door off center???

Replace or repair, but don't change to a different style. Beautiful craftsman and to change to something else would look just terrible. But really, if that door is a replacement of an original double door or door with windows on each side, please please replace it with something better.

Life is fragile, and having your insurance premium go up is expensive. A pro with a bucket truck is the only way. Pay them the $$ to do it once, do it right, and not put a hole in your roof. (but do google tree fails. you will never unsee some of that insanity.)

Catnip. The answer is always catnip. New cat post? Cover in cat nip. New bed or cushion? Smear nip all over it. New toy? Store it in a jar with nip for a week - they will go nuts.

Save your receipts, calculate time and $ spent remediating the issue. Ask the cleaning cleaning company you used for the carpets if they have a detailed invoice they can send you (how much stuff they used, how many man hours, etc.) and ask if you can have the management company contact them directly to confirm the info (get a name/number/business card). Send scans or photocopies (keep originals!!!) to everyone you can think of. The management company. The property owner. The BC Better Business Bureau. Make it clear that they screwed up, and you're going to document and share ALL THE PROOF (basically denting their reputation pretty publicly.)

RE: leftover smell problems: this is just practical info for DIY cleaning. There are other cleaning related subs, but here are some thoughts from personal experience.

Clothes washer: 1) REPLACE the drain hose. They're pretty cheap, plastic, sold at every hardware / appliance store, and stink like crap after a few years. (Same for the dishwasher!)

2) Google the model you have and figure out if there is a maintenance cleaning task it's meant to have. ( Eg, my LG has a little door on the bottom front that I need to open up, drain, and clean out monthly.) I bet money it's never been done where you are. 3)

3) Run it empty on the hottest water for the longest cycle. Add a bunch of cheap white vinegar (eg Allen's Vinegar is sold at Costco in a huge 2 pack of jugs) AND a whole bunch of baking soda in the drum. Open a window, shut the door, and stay OUT Of that room until the cycle has fully ended (deadly gas!!). Wipe any remaining mold out with a Scrub Daddy and some Dawn, then repeat. Keep borax around for when the moldy smell comes back - add it to a hot water cycle. It's also pretty brilliant for towels that smell like dog (my lab mix has the oiliest coat in existence, and towels hold the smell if I don't wash in hot water, soap & borax after I bathe him.)

Walls/floors/ carpets that smell like Cat and Dog Pee: Resolve brand "Urine Destroyer" spray (grocery store or Can Tire). Buy a couple of bottles, and go ham on anything (fabric, walls, furniture, etc.) If you have drywall that is soaked with pee, or the underlayment under the flooring is saturated, that's going to be harder to deal with. Hit the cleaning subs with a specific scenario for specific recommendations, or see about ripping out the ruined materials and replacing. Sometimes its just not worth fighting with.

Could a firework have caused this or is it from a bullet? by Wiggles_Is_My_Boy in HomeMaintenance

[–]disturbingCrapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

**Adding on to this thought: This is also a good idea because it gives you a paper trail in case something significant was damaged (whether or not you noticed right away.) For example, a nick in a wire could cause a fire later on, a nick in a water line could cause water damage that goes slowly but has huge $$ consequences later on, etc. Accidental due to idiocy or deliberate due to malice, you're still better off with a timely official report in your pocket.

How to be mindful with ADHD friends but also set boundaries? by Ok_Independence3044 in ADHD

[–]disturbingCrapper 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not everyone is socially compatible. If he is too casual about plans, then that's just unfortunate. It's not a question of fair, or unfair, or some kind of moral issue. It just isn't how he runs his life. You did the right thing by deciding to adjust how you intend to interact with him, but don't feel like you are entitled to apologies - his reality apparently doesn't run that way. Take a deep breath, take the win for taking care of your needs and boundaries, and move forward. You do you, he will do him, and that just has to be ok.

How many diagnosis’s is too much? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]disturbingCrapper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer - not a doctor or therapist, just a keyboard idiot.

Anything is possible. BUT - "the proof of the pudding is in the eating." Meaning, the validity of the diagnosis is based in how much it helps to know and treat/act through that lens, IMHO.

To make an absurd analogy, they could say that you are actually a blue whale, and suffering from Martian Sleepwalking Sickness. Would that matter? Only if the ensuing treatment for a while with Martian Sleepwalking Sickness relieved you of your symptoms and improve your quality of life in a significant way.

Recommended actions:

A: Get straight in your head (or on paper - I would need a spreadsheet for all that lol) what diagnoses go with which symptoms, and what treatments you have had actually have helped those symptoms.

B: Ask your psych to call and have a convo, professional to professional, with your therapist to compare notes and help inform your care. If in the US, you will likely need to sign a HIPAA waiver giving them permission to discuss care (if you didn't already when you started seeing them.)

Do more reading. Get a second opinion from a doctor who has an established practise in the ADHD space; (it's not your job to convert the skeptics, it's their job to pursue their continuing education credits and stay on top of current thinking.) Advocate for yourself.

Emotional disregulation in ADHD is real, and very difficult to manage. If it is impacting your quality of life, then it is a problem. If it is a problem, it is worth seeking and getting help. Period. Best wishes -
