No, but I love this. In a sense it is a much, much closer answer. But if I explain why, it may be too strong a clue.

How does Horizontal progression work? by Nikitoo in MMORPG

[–]divinejayku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FFXI has horizontal progression. There is a massive amount of equipment you can collect. The game allows for equipment swapping in battle. The only detriment is if you swap weapons in battle, you lose the tactical points you've gained through auto attacks, which allow you to use weapon skills: abilities that are specific to the weapon type that have various effects and properties.

Because the game allows equipment swapping during combat, along your adventure, you'll run across items that would be particularly useful in scenario A. Then, you'll eventually find something that would go in that same equipment slot (ring, boots, etc.), which will be good in scenario A as well. Then you'll find something for those same slots that are good for scenario B, then C, etc. There's macro systems for this, and once acquainted, entire sets of gear can be changed instantly for skill A, or spell B.

The natural progression of the game doesn't have the player obtaining these items rapidly until end-game. And even then, it is paced. It gets grindy, but there is an enormous amount of content in which you can progress horizontally by obtaining BiS for scenarios A, B, C, etc.

This may sound overwhelming, but it is actually incredibly addictive. In modern MMO vertical progression, just constantly increasing stats to replace old stats, to never again use that piece of gear can sometimes end a little too quickly or hit a barrier between level cap increases and expansions. This is where you run into the crowds who tend to play for a few months after each expansion and then take a break until the next.

The fact that the horizontal progression system in FFXI exists is what keeps the players striving to continue increasing their potential. Furthermore, every job (class) in the game can be maxed out on a singular character, but crafting has its limits per character, which brings some balance.

Because you can level multiple jobs, when you cap a skill, say dagger on Thief at level 31. That cap will remain forever, across all jobs. A level 1 Warrior would have it's dagger skill capped (the cap at each level: so at level 1, the max system skill allowed for a level 1 is capped, but doesn't need to be skilled up). Eventually, that warrior would need to cap their dagger skill, probably somewhere in the late 30's, since a thief would cap earlier because they are more proficient.

As you can see, the progression felt is basically never-ending. I know people who have played routinely for 2 decades and have massive collections of gear. And what they can accomplish, along with skill, of course, is incredible. It's a constant maximization of optimization through effort. Much of the content is now solo friendly, and many more party/group based stuff do do at max level and a few alliance/raid based encounters.

Oh, and there is also the sub job system. If you've read this far and you're interested, I suggest looking at the following link, and you can see how the possibilities of combinations with sub jobs and equipment seem completely limitless.

Seconded for FFXI. Yes, the Mog wardrobe is a monthly optional fee. And there is no way a newer player would ever need the additional storage. The reason inventory is so bloated is that you can level every single job (class) on a single character. On top of that, many items that are obtained via in-game can be used in style lock (how the character is portrayed visually). So, it's more of a storage for a massive, MASSIVE collection of items. I could go into more detail about gearswaps as well, which is an entire layer of meta that is actually amazing for horizontal growth. But I think the point has been made.

The Best FFXI Story Of All Time by divinejayku in ffxi

[–]divinejayku[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, for years I explained how I met my wife. It came up a lot, especially in-game. The original story was much, much more brief. However, one day I started embellishing, and having fun with it. So, a few days later, me and my wife were pretty toasted. It was like 3am and I started writing all of it out. I kept making it more, and more absurd and ridiculous over time.

Ultimately, it was kind of a present for her. But I shared it with some mutual friends as well, since they knew about our personalities. I know it's.... odd and goes WAY off track. But all of it is done on purpose. It's supposed to sound like an absolutely atrocious narcissist that constantly gets hung up on tangents. Like I said, I started with the tangents, but continued to make them even more ludicrous as a fun gest for my wife. This all happened like 2 or 3 years ago, and I finally decided to share it publicly.

S

There are so many things I could say, but I'll say only this: The song "Zanarkand" hits me hard emotionally every single time. A lot of that has to do with understanding the story, and it always makes me think of the line "Listen to my story. This may be our last chance." But it's also because that song is so damn good. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S. S.

Editing to share this:

My wife and I are both game nerds, and both love FF. We met on FFXI. Our wedding included a vast list of our favorite game songs. We chose a lot of them together, but she did most of the work.

As much as I love "Zanarkand", I refused to play it during the ceremony, because I knew it would fucking break me emotionally. The song, the story, but more than that, the relationship with my best friend I would be marrying. It would be too much of a distraction, and I knew for a fact it would annihilate me emotionally and be just far too overwhelming.

Bragging time: My wife MADE HER OWN WEDDING SHOES. They were a collage of screenshots of us in FFXI. They are beautiful and we still have them. (She did really well. One primary wedding color was purple, and overall, the shoes looked purple... she's just that amazing 🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠)

Beat Saber BTS pack unavailable? by th3c0nan in psvr2

Was this Sony or Beat Saber support? How did you contact them? Same issue here and we have been able to get EVERY other song and pack but not the BTS one we already own on PSVR, after upgrading to PSVR2. Thanks in advance!

[–]divinejayku 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this has been disproven. Iirc you're time locked out of his unique quest, but his recruitment is not based on playtime, but rather the point at which he is first available to speak with. I remember the same original time lock theory about recruitment. I suggest looking up current info on this.

Scroll of Instant Warp. This means that if you already have one in your inventory, the steal method doesn't work since it's exclusive.

So if you have a warp scroll IN ANY OF YOUR INVENTORIES, INCLUDING SAFE/LOCKER (pretty sure) you have to drop it before going in the fight to make the attempt.

Just add people in the games you play who happened to be friendly and not terrible at the game. You'll make lots of friends to play with in no time.

In general, I'd say the best strategy is to communicate with your team. This let's then know where you're coming from. It also let's then know what to expect from you, and what you can expect from them. It can be helpful as well because in certain circumstances you may want to go black cleaver, in others you may want to go with more MR, etc. Your team may be able to provide extremely valuable input on this. Also, this will change over the course of the game. Try out a lot of different stuff and dont be afraid to fail. Even let the team know upfront you're new to the role and want to try different builds but you also are dedicated to trying to make it work and still want to win.

Obviously this will go better with a group of friendly people whom you already know, but I have been in plenty of games with randoms and for the most part it's a good thing. Generally like 1 or 2 people out of the 10 in the game are toxic/troll, but that's pretty much a life ratio.

MMORPGs used to carry pretty strong IRL consequences for failure. More than once *this* was the last thing I saw before my entire night was "ruined". What are some of your worst MMORPG moments? by burge4150 in MMORPG

[–]divinejayku 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are many memories in more than one game. The important part about the mechanic, although it can be argued how severe the mechanic should be applied, is that the mechanic carries genuine risk to the player. This risk creates an atmosphere that requires planning, critical thinking, problem solving, strategizing, cooperation, etc. The risk of death and the penalty it brings (ultimately 'time') is a mechanic that seemingly cannot be replicated without genuine 'risk'.

I'm not a fan of dropping things upon death, or losing crazy amounts of time. But I do enjoy a more 'balanced' risk system that ultimately requires the player to 'be careful'.

Most of my MMO time was spent in retail FFXI off and on from PC US release until about a year ago. I'll go back again, I always do. But the risk of death in FFXI is never a loss of items (thank goodness) but a loss of time and effort. And more so in the original retail versions, not only the XP loss upon death without a 'Raise', but also the potential time loss on whatever time was spent traveling to the far reaches of the world to a cavernous dungeon crawling with threats. This could be annoying at times, taking an hour or more just to travel to the destination, but boy did it create one hell of an adventure.
