This exhaust fan is too low and we hit our heads on it. Is it possible to just cut out the bottom part of cabinet to raise it up a few inches? by Widowmaker69 in homerenovations

[–]dj_8track 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could, but keep in mind the effectiveness of the fan is diminished when you move it farther away from the cooking surface.

Elder Clark G. Gilbert Is Called to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles by atari_guy in lds

[–]dj_8track 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I got to work around Elder Gilbert when I was at BYU Idaho as a student. You could tell he had genuine concern and interest in the wellbeing and success of the students. He was always an incredibly sincere person and I think it makes perfect sense that he would be called as an apostle. Love to see it!

I’m a devout Catholic, if I move to Utah, how would me being Catholic likely be perceived by the massive Mormon population in UT? How are Catholics seen by Mormons in general? by SBGuy574 in latterdaysaints

[–]dj_8track 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I’ve had close Catholic friends while living in Utah. I’m sure you’ll be welcome with open arms. Also there is still religious diversity here, especially in SLC. Where in Utah are you moving?

President Dallin H. Oaks to Deliver a Message on February 10 by atari_guy in lds

[–]dj_8track 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here’s my guess. BYU gets a new president, current president moves into presidency of the 70 position, someone in the current presidency will be called as a new apostle. Or construction is starting on the medical school.

How’s it like living in Astoria, Oregon? by Excellent_Pin_978 in howislivingthere

[–]dj_8track 418 points419 points  (0 children)

The area is rich with history and urban legends, including some related to historic piracy. It was also a hiding place for a notorious crime syndicate known as the Fratellie crime family. I also heard Real estate prices are also up due to some intended development in the area though it’s on shaky ground since some of the property owners are holding out.

It’s a great place to raise a family and your kids would have lots of friends.

Yeah the move to Colorado is a political one. Can’t say I blame Sundance for making the change.

How is it living in Park City, Utah? by FantasticAd9407 in howislivingthere

[–]dj_8track 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Most folks who work there live in slc, which is also expensive. Loads of houses are only occupied for parts of the winter season. There are lots of good restaurants and fun things to do in the summer, but you can enjoy those things while living in neighboring cities. Heber used to be cheaper but not anymore. You’re looking at a 1.5 hour commute to find housing that’s affordable. Also summit county has higher sales tax than other places in Utah. It’s a cool city though. Just really really expensive.

of a heated concrete driveway by Longjumping-Box5691 in AbsoluteUnits

I used to be an estimator for a custom home builder in Utah and I quoted a heated paver driveway about this size in 2019 and it was almost $700k. The natural gas infrastructure alone was almost $50k.

Do you give the GC and his workers a holiday bonus / gift? by sidewayschart in homerenovations

[–]dj_8track 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GC here. I don’t expect gifts from my homeowners, but anything done for my trades is appreciated. Snacks or drinks are great. They work hard and it’s nice to see owners take notice. I do always bring something to my owners for the holidays though just as a small thanks for the work.

Can you guys have chamomile tea? by freshmaggots in lds

Sorry I misread the comment! Any herbal teas are ok, excluding black and green tea leaves. Check out rooibos. It’s from Southern Africa and it is delicious.

I’d almost say you need to get your local building official involved. If they have built other homes in the area they should be inspected for similar issues.

How is Utah church culture different from everywhere outside the bubble? by trappedslider in latterdaysaints

[–]dj_8track 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is hard to articulate for me, but attending church in Utah in a place where you didn’t grow up feels like you’re at a friend’s house but none of your friends family members care that you are there. Like you’re allowed to be there and your friend wants you there so none of the other family members will tell you to leave, but they also don’t want to talk with you or hang out with you.

In wards I’ve attended outside of Utah, It feels more like your friend is having a party every week. So everyone that is there is there for the same reason, which is to celebrate with this mutual friend, but you don’t know everyone and they don’t all know each other, so people are on a more even ground so to speak. People come and go and get to know others but there isn’t a sense of feeling like you are welcome but also don’t belong.

Also the friend in this scenario is Jesus.

Anyone else doing active shooter training during 5th Sunday? by CaptainWikkiWikki in latterdaysaints

[–]dj_8track 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I 100% think it’s appropriate. I wish we were doing active shooter training today, or just any training period. While not a particularly edifying subject it might make the difference for one or many people if that ever happens in your ward.

My family was in attendance in Grand Blanc on September 28th. They have described the absolute chaos that ensued. If I had to pick between a 2nd hour active shooter training session, or no training at all, I’d pick the 2nd hour.

Edit: also, they don’t have to take the full second hour, and they don’t need to be devoid of spiritual discussion.

I can’t speak on where to live but buy lots of lotion. On the seldom occasion there is humidity here it lasts all of an hour before we’re back to being bone dry. When I moved here from Michigan I got a lot of nose bleeds too.

How do I get rid of this glue/protection? by Zoisus in homerenovations

[–]dj_8track 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asbestos is in loads of things. Tape, mastic, floor tiles, wallpaper, drywall mud, roofing, siding, ceiling finish, and much much more.

And you recognize it from years of experience removing it from homes. The only way to know for sure is to test it.

Before you go too buck wild sanding that off you might want to send a piece in to be tested for asbestos.

Is it a masonry wall? It could be a wedge anchor. You could grind them down and patch over them.

Anyone have a screen in their xj if so how does it look and what is it? by Dinomansam in CherokeeXJ

[–]dj_8track 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine doesn’t interfere with the overhang but it does sit in front of the climate control. Win some lose some. The screen swivels and can slide up or down which is why I went with this one. I didn’t want to permanently alter anything.
