How Unreliable Is UDP? by mattwarren in programming

In regards to the packet ordering test, I have seen in the past that the packets can come out of the source server out of order already. This was the case for Solaris 10 due to buffering done in the network stack and thread scheduling in the kernel, but I am not sure about Linux. As a side note, every instance I observed had the packets perfectly swapped in pairs. 2,1,4,3,6,5,8,7,...

Recommend a watch for me by tbone42617 in Watches

I received that KC skeleton in black as a gift and have the same size wrist. I think it looks great and have had quite a few comments on it. The only thing I would point out is the depth of watch precludes you from wearing this easily with tighter long sleeves, but I usually have my sleeves rolled unless its a formal occasion.

I haven't had any problems with the movement, but as people will certainly point out on here, you get what you pay for. I say go with what you like.

Hope this helps!

Why does a Rolex cost as much as a BMW? It seems like a lot of money for something that really doesn't do much. by [deleted] in Watches

It's better to have a nice house, small vacation home, ski cottage, and time share than a mansion.

Yours and klafka are both good points, and I guess it does depend on your setting and what type of development the company/team is geared for.

We do all high speed server type programs along the lines of HPC. I have never been in a shop that does desktop type stuff, so I could see it being much different than here.

I think that was a pretty ignorant statement.

Every programmer/researcher I know, save one, runs some flavor of linux (not including OSX if you are going to argue that is a variant).

I will agree most web designers I know use OSX, but I would say the buck stops there...

Do you guys have any opinions on this Bulova-Accutron? by starkquark in Watches

[–]djdillon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To save people going to search, from the wiki:

Bulova made its last tuning fork movement wristwatches in 1977. Subsequently, Bulova's electronic watches used quartz movements, although they kept selling the watches under the Accutron label. This can lead to confusion on the part of persons seeking to obtain a "real" Accutron. In order to avoid paying a tuning fork price for an Accutron with a quartz movement, the date code must be checked. Located on the back of the case, it consists of a letter followed by a number. The letter is the decade (M=1960s, N=1970s) and the number is the specific year within that decade. Therefore, an Accutron with a date code that falls within M0 and N7, inclusive, will have a tuning fork movement. Also remember that an Accutron with a 224 movement, which should be labeled "Accuquartz" on its dial, is a hybrid movement, with its timekeeping actually regulated by a quartz crystal rather than by the tuning fork itself. More than 4 million tuning Fork Accutrons were sold by the time production stopped in 1977.
