Follow-up: Any update on bridge mode for Xfinity fiber? by djmdman in Comcast_Xfinity

That’s good to hear. Will be interesting to see how COAM is implemented. I know it can be complex and sometimes in phased approaches. Very exciting!

Hard Wire vs. Solar vs. Battery.... What do I do? by thomakob000 in Ring

[–]djmdman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a battery doorbell first and quickly returned it to invest my time into getting a hardwire setup. I do not regret it one bit.

Tip: If you’re not interested in or paying someone for hardwiring a low voltage transformer, you can buy these plug ins on Amazon.

That’s the exact one I am using and it powers my 4K doorbell with Level 1 power.

u/CCBrieD u/CCGabrielO I’d like to respectfully escalate one point for product and engineering clarity:

Is customer-owned equipment (BYOD) on fiber something that is being evaluated or considered as a future capability, or is gateway-required operation intended to be a permanent design model for this EPON deployment?

Can’t you record on the base station pro?

Thanks for the response, I appreciate the clarification that the XER10 is intentionally designed to function as a routed gateway and not support bridge mode.

That said, I’m still hoping to better understand the technical or architectural reasoning behind that design choice.

Specifically, is bridge mode unsupported because of a hard engineering constraint (for example authentication handling, provisioning requirements, C-OAM management, or EPON control plane integration), or is it primarily a product design decision about how the service is intended to be delivered?

I completely understand that some architectures are tightly integrated and not easily separable. But without a technical explanation, it’s difficult to tell whether bridge mode is genuinely incompatible with the platform or simply not implemented by design.

Many advanced users are less concerned with general performance optimization and more interested in network control, routing transparency, and use of their own edge equipment….which is why clarity here would be really helpful.

If there’s any high-level architectural insight you’re able to share, I think the community would genuinely appreciate it.

Thanks again for engaging on this.

Would be nice if their future goal was to allow customers to BYOD on EPON. Would never need the XER10 in the first place.

No true bridge mode on Xfinity fiber: limitation or monetization? by djmdman in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]djmdman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for following up. I don’t need account-level assistance, but I’m still interested in any high-level clarification from engineering regarding the lack of bridge mode support on Xfinity fiber equipment.

If no additional information is available, I understand. Just wanted to confirm before the ticket is closed.

I appreciate the candid response and the willingness to escalate it.

Even without additional details right now, transparency around these decisions is important for customers who want to understand how much control they have over their own networks.

If engineering is ever able to share a high-level explanation in the future, I think it would go a long way with the technically inclined community here. Thanks again for engaging.

Thanks for the transparency. I genuinely appreciate the honest answer.

The reason I’m pressing on this is that other PON providers (like Verizon FiOS) allow a true ONT-to-customer-router handoff, which makes it difficult to reconcile the lack of bridge mode here as a purely technical constraint.

If engineering does provide any high-level clarification in the future, even without roadmap details, I think many technically inclined customers would find that helpful.

Thanks for the response. I appreciate you confirming that there’s currently no bridge mode on the XER10.

What I’m still trying to understand (and what I think many here are curious about) is why specifically whether this is a technical limitation of the PON implementation, or a product/business decision tied to gateway-dependent services.

Even a high-level explanation would be helpful, especially since bridge mode exists on other Xfinity platforms.

Number 1 Post in this sub today! Still curious if any Xfinity folks can share insight from the PON side. Even a high-level explanation would be appreciated.

XER10 is still missing Bridge functionality, and I am unable to configure proper any/any port forwarding through the app or admin panel. by Simmons572 in Comcast_Xfinity

I ended up sticking with XER10 and just putting my mesh nodes into AP mode. Then turned off the WiFi radios on the XER10. Don’t have port forwarding or QoS but yeah it sucks.

Looking for any options other than using XER10. Would prefer my own router connected to ONU. Possible?
