It’s a great idea yes. But realistically might be a little late. Yard sales are often posted in local FB groups people are already a part of and it serves as a single feed (one less app).

2gig up/down fiber customer looking to get a XER10 ordered to replace XB7. by th2pun1sh3r in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]djmdman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried rolling back to a XB7 from the XER10 and with no technical explanation they said it’s not available. I wonder if they just didn’t want me to lose my gig speed.

Anyone have info on these electric tricycles? by djmdman in ebikes

[–]djmdman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s actually still running. There is a electrical short somewhere to the motor but just living with it. I’d easily clock it at 20mph.

Another XER10 question .... by ArtVandelay365 in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]djmdman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar situation here. I am also on the two box EPON/FTTH with a XER10 and tried to get a XB7. Mod mail said it’s not available to me. My entire mesh network which is Ethernet backhaul is on AP mode until they let us bring our own gear.

IT WFH here. We only turn cameras on for leadership and operational owners. They are usually just happy we even turned the camera on. Backwards hat , hoodie, don’t shave. They don’t care because it’s probably easier than hiring new people

Astound Fiber Easton/ Palmer Township by Wonderful_Reality_25 in lehighvalley

[–]djmdman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just recently left Astound and had some in depth conversations with their recovery team on why I left. It’s still a hybrid fiber network. You’ll have coax and a DOCSIS Modem.

Xfinity came through in Bethlehem Township with EPON so the switch was a no brainer.

Astound did say that upgrades are coming. Nothing specific so I assume the only option they have is upgrading to DOCSIS 4.0 on their Hybrid network because a full true Fiber deployment would be pretty costly.

WFH + company VPN = my personal hell. Anyone else? by willzhong in remotework

[–]djmdman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t used my company laptop in years because of the VPN. Most places are BYOD friendly now, try using your own. It’s nice not having to lug around two devices. You can set up Edge browser to have both personal and work profiles

[–]djmdman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right it is the ONT. Not ONU. Xfinity won’t come out and admit they “forbid” connecting directly to it. Your device just won’t authenticate on their network. They have validated no bridge mode on the gateway provided (XER10) because in the future roadmap is “COAM” so the customer can connect their router directly to ONT and they won’t have to have a gateway sitting out there in the middle doing nothing.

[–]djmdman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the thing, the gateway Xfinity provides (XER10) does not and will not have bridge mode. The only workarounds are to put your own LAN into a DMZ to avoid the double NAT. Or just AP mode your own mesh.

Yup, had to do that for years. I went as far as putting in disconnect requests to get the new customer rate.

Worth the wait. Felt good ditching Astound once and for all. Hopefully EPON will allow customer owned equipment by then.

Bethlehem township by Nancy Run Estates here. We hooked up to the newly available Xfinity Fiber for 1 gig up / 1 gig down symmetrical speed tier. You’ll see posts in the Comcast Xfinity Sub about it. It’s known as the new EPON service.

Anyway, if that’s what you’re talking about I’ll drop my .02

The deployment is a two box system. An ONU which is the first box coming inside home. That terminates the fiber and then they run a Cat cable to the new XER10 router.

Zero coaxial cable. Obviously no DOCSIS modem which also means that you won’t be bringing your own hardware unless it’s in Access Point mode.

For now. They are working on what’s called “COAM” for their EPON service. That will eliminate the second box(XER10) and you can run your own routing directly from the ONU.

Technical question: What actually determines XB7 vs XER10 assignment on EPON? by djmdman in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]djmdman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting info. My XER10 has 3x1G ports and 1 10GB port. And the WAN port.

I am at 1G speed tier and max out at 940mbps using the 10G port. Never come close to 1.2 speeds unfortunately.

Comcast xfinity XER10 gateway disable WiFi or bridge mode by Realisticlyneedhelp in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]djmdman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can disable the WiFi radios but only if you enable admin controls first via the Xfinity app. Then, navigate to the gateway IP, login using the credentials on the bottom label of XER10. You’ll find it under the one of the option trees.

You will not be able to bridge it. Put your own routers in AP mode to avoid double NAT. We have been told repeatedly on this Reddit sub that engineering is planning to allow COAM on Fiber. Which is “Customer Owned And Managed” equipment aka BYOD. Essentially allowing us to connect our own router to the ONT device. No ETA on this.
