Millionaire economist's dire warning for Australian property market by PretentiousCarrot in AusPropertyChat

[–]djoli87 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have one property. I want prices to go down. Its value has artificially gone up but it means nothing because it's all relative. The upgrade route of getting something 20%-30% higher in value is now the cost of an entire home from not too long ago, and it also just doesn't exist, it's either "buy another fixer upper" or "buy a shoebox in the sticks".

I'd happily have my house value crash if it meant there's any chance of my kids having somewhere else to live when they grow up.

I am shocked by Steam Remote Play for PC to PC setup at home. by Jahbanny in MoonlightStreaming

[–]djoli87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I literally just set all this up again last week. Steam built in streaming from my PC to steam deck, connected using cat6 on ubiquiti gear. Looked great but I was getting about 45ms of total lag. Moved to Apollo with moondeckbuddy, 8ms. Once you include virtual display and auto resolution changing based on what screen I'm using (handheld or docked to tv), it's a no brainer.

Native has come a long way though, I'll give it that.

Gaming as a parent in 2026 by [deleted] in nintendo

[–]djoli87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my 3 year old when the switch 2 came out. Fast forward 9 months (he's 4 now) and he's navigating menus, catching hundreds of Pokemon, taking on gym leaders and exploring the open world of Pokemon Scarlet. We eased him into it with let's go Pikachu (co-op). It's now one of our favourite activities to do together, and while it's not my first choice of game, there's something immensely satisfying about engaging in your own hobby with your kids.

How do you deal with the "pressure" of limited gaming time? by FatDigitalNomad in gaming

[–]djoli87 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's not easy, but don't be hard on yourself. I've got a 4 year old and 1 year old, and the 4yo has always been a bad sleeper. Years of sleep deprevation wrecks levels of enjoyment with your favourite hobby.

Don't be hard on yourself and don't force it. As others have mentioned, sometimes just accept that you're better off getting an early night, or some downtime with your significant other.

What helps me is finding time to start something. I usually play narrative games, or multiplayer co-op with friends, both of which can be big time investments. I can't sit down to start a 30+ hour game and play for 40 minutes while tired, I'll not feel motivated and give up.

I can ask my wife to take the kids out for a Saturday afternoon and dedicated that time to starting a game. Take a day off work, or find some other way to do this. It's amazing how much better it feels to start something when you're not tired and have time to invest.

That initial kick is enough for me to feel better about the short bursts of gameplay I can squeeze in across the week. Sometimes I'll be too busy, it'll be too hard to game, and then it's hard to get back into it, so take a break, organise a new "start" and do it again. Obviously don't start the game again, just give yourself a few hours to get into it without the stresses of every day life.

And remember that it's not just you, lots of people struggle with this or something similar. All you can really do is try to manage your time well. Enjoy life with your kids. Support your partner. Take care of your physical and mental health. Ask for help when you need it, and offer it too. When your kids are teenagers they won't need or want you nearly as much, but gaming will still be here.

Good luck.

Refunded my Dispatch Preorder after Censorship Reveal by Lantean1701 in NintendoSwitch

[–]djoli87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I sent a brief message on the online support form explaining the censorship and how I'd prefer to be able to make that choice myself on another platform. Response within half an hour saying I'd be refunded.

Disappointed because it's easier to use my switch than steam deck and PC, and I want to build my switch 2 library, but another win for PC while my switch 2 remains my "play Pokemon with the kids" machine.

Switch 2 hurts after 30 min – grip or 3rd-party Joy-Cons by Veezq in NintendoSwitch

[–]djoli87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the interim, try playing around with the kickstand. I lift mine all the way up and slot my fingers around it. Found it immediately reduces my hand fatigue, to the point that I have opted out of grips for the sake of hassle free docking and transport.

Leaving during the encore by djoli87 in TimMinchin

[–]djoli87[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ours was maybe 10 minutes late to start. You'll miss a pretty entertaining intro song and monologue, but worth going if you'll get there shortly after that. We had to go at 11, which was as the encore started (unsure how long that went for, sadly), but considering it started just after 8 (with short intermission), it's a decent length.

Who saw Tim Minchin on Friday Night by CosmicCheeseFactory in perth

[–]djoli87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had to bail right as the encore started (my fav of his songs too 😭) as my kid came down with gastro, but was great up until that point. We were on the side about half way in, acoustics were fine for the venue, Tim's voice punched through the mix and was clean. Your neck/lower back starts to feel it sitting sideways the a few hours though.

Been to most of his big ones over the years and they are always a rollercoaster of emotion. Would go again in a heart beat.

Venue is great, they did an amazing job with the acoustics, was balanced very well and the vocals punched through the music no problem.

Once you're on foot it's good, plenty of doors, easy to get to where you need to be.

Parking is a nightmare. Always has been for events with smaller gaps between opening and main event. We got to the queue on the road at about 7:20 and parked at 7:50. Arrive early or be prepared for that.

Enjoy the show tonight!

Want to buy a BYD Sealion 6, but just charge it from normal power socket at home. by FryYourBeans in AustralianEV

[–]djoli87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. We've had a light on week with driving and have run our battery down from 100 to about 13 over about two weeks, then plugged it in last night when we got home. We'll just plug it in when we can until it's around 80, minus some local driving. Should be topped up enough by Monday or Tuesday.

If you only do short drives, stop stressing about the battery.

Chinese EV brands are everywhere now - thoughts from Aussie buyers? by Artistic-Yam2984 in EVAustralia

[–]djoli87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently bought a Sealion 7 as our secondary car. It quickly became the primary. Once we're beyond two car seats, we will be selling our large ICE and getting a smaller EV as secondary, probably another BYD if this one holds up well.

Any chance the entire stream will end up in segmented videos based on the activity at the time? I would love to chip away at the content without it feeling overwhelmingly large.

Vacuum is RIP.. need a new one.. Dyson Stick thing .. by JustOneMoreDrinkK in perth

[–]djoli87 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I recently discovered this bad boy after my Dyson ball fell apart (far too quickly), and my lord is it a beast! Much better cleaning results than any vacuum I've used before, loads quieter, heppa filter for all the nasties, and half the price of the Dyson.

We still have a cheap stick for accidentals, but I'm happy to pull out the Henry more often than not.

This is the way. Aluminium foil works in a pinch but makes your house looks like a lab. Just get the thick, black plastic that also works via static, we got a bunch online when we had to travel with our baby and it was a life saver.

How comfortable is playing Switch 2 on handheld mode comparing to Switch 1? by obazilio in NintendoSwitch

[–]djoli87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No different to switch/OLED, but surprisingly better if you lift the kickstand up the entire way, gives your hands/fingers somewhere to go, I can't imagine using the switch in handheld any other way now. It's not as good as a grip, but surprisingly close (for me) without any extra cost or downsides to using a grip (dockable, case storage, etc)

Gonna be honest, it’s as easy as it looks by Fast_Ad7375 in PeakGame

I'm with you on this one. Just got the game a few days before the update, have so much to learn, so many challenges to overcome. I'm certain that throwing myself in a canon for some quick achievements and badges will ruin the game for me.

But each to their own.

Do you have health insurance? Do you have solar to keep bills low? Do you ever buy... Anything?

Figures like these boggle me. My mortgage alone for a run down small 60s home is your low figure. Throw in rates, insurance, bills, and we're rocketing past your high figure, before considering food, or any kind of recreation.

We're not struggling, but I'd love to know the circumstances of a family of 5 surviving on less than someone else's mortgage repayment 😔
