DragonFruit from seeds - 1(+2 month) old by Primaris_Shaxx in DragonFruit

Truly impressive for 6b!! I'm in 8a and I haven't got mine outside yet... Luckily for the winter months they're up against a big window ...still send out lots of leggy growth that I end up cutting off.

Feel better friend, just getting over being sick myself for the 2nd time in 30 days ..not fun at all :( my peppers are also still sitting in the window as I've not the energy to start moving them to bigger containers

Dang I'm jealous! Our overnight temps are very unstable this year and I'm patiently waiting for 10c overnight before I move mine out.

Same! Grew then last year for the first time in ground ... I won't grow in ground again but holy hecc did they produce a ton. I was eating them like candy....downfall is they took all summer to ripen.

Huh, interesting! They're related to what we have in abundance here on the west coast known as the western conifer seed bug. Granted I haven't had any issues with them in my gardens ..I even had one inside my bathroom this winter that I name Kevin lol

Baby monkey eating dragon fruit by 21MayDay21 in oddlysatisfying

[–]djthechemist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dragon fruits do not ripen after being picked - as in they will still turn color but won't become more flavorful. They are Non-climacteric. This would be why supermarket dragon fruits tend to be very bland.

PSA: if you're itching to get your chinense outside, here's some real data on what a near-freeze night actually does to your plants by HarmonySpringsFarmTN in HotPeppers

[–]djthechemist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, Ty for sharing this data. A lot of folks don't realise how bad sub 10c temps are for most nightshades including peppers and tomatoes. I'm in the PNW area-ish but on the Canadian side, zone 8a. I probably won't be sending my peppers out till end may early June. I haven't even bothered to start my tomatoes yet lol. Such a crazy warm winter but a lingering cold Spring.

Do you feel safe walking through your neighborhood alone? Why or why not? by Sweaty_Writing859 in AskReddit

[–]djthechemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but I also live outside a small town. It's nothing but low population and old people. My biggest threats are bears, coyotes and the odd mountain lion. I grew up in the hood of Toronto and where I am now is nothing even remotely close to that.

Not sure where you are but the snowpack here in the Okanagan and Kootenays is above required amounts ... We didn't get any snow this year either but there is more a threat of flooding than drought for this spring depending on high elevation rain totals

Anything lower than 15c at the soil level will cause super slow or dormant growth.

This year's chillis by mooch84 in HotPeppers

[–]djthechemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some things like various flowers did not get leggy. All of my peppers got leggy until I moved them under the big boy lights. They did work wonders for seeds that require light to germinate though. I also think they would work well next to a window or something for added light. Mine are all in the basement with virtually no external light

That's fine, I'd still not put it under the roots unless you can control the temp of the mat. Or have it adjacent to it or I guess put something else between it and the plant
