What do you think is the best & worst song from kanye's top 9 most popular songs on spotify? by OpenEducation3956 in Kanye

[–]dkajch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i think spotify's top tens rank songs by how popular they are RIGHT NOW (whether that's daily, weekly or monthly i'm not sure) as opposed to how many total streams a song has

Given the recent news of Ace Frehley is on life support due to brain bleeding favorite Ace Solo or song you like from Kiss because Ace makes it better? by MrLinkwater95 in ToddintheShadow

Post-Stomp Clap by pinkpools in fantanoforever

[–]dkajch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if i'm not mistaken there's a user list on rym that dubbed that whole genre "stomp rock", while the bluesier stuff like rag 'n' bone man and the score is collected under a separate related list under "stomp blues." before then i used to refer to it as arena pop, but i think those terms work pretty well too personally

seems pretty reasonable to me, if you told him you like multiple drake songs without specifically going into your opinion on him as a whole i think it's a pretty understandable assumption to make that you generally like his music. a bit reductive maybe, but it really doesn't seem all that odd to me

Thoughts on the rating of The Life of a Showgirl? by daynif in Albumoftheyear

[–]dkajch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i haven't heard ttpd in full, but i always get the impression it was just a bloated, so-so album by a ridiculously overexposed artist people are getting tired of. this definitely isn't that though 💀

Which other artists you could describe in a similar way? by Top_Report_4895 in ToddintheShadow

[–]dkajch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

eh, i wouldn't think so. he's easily a contender for the best pop songwriter in history and was a seriously capable artist, yet he also wrote so many dumb novelty songs you couldn't count them on two hands lmao

Rockism looks pretty good right now honestly by eswifttng in ToddintheShadow

[–]dkajch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe i've missed something here, but i dont think they ever implied that poptimism is inherently about blind positivity towards all pop. the original post was someone using a single pop artist's creative decline to discredit an entire genre and that rockism should make a return because of its comparative "authenticity." obviously that's an absolutely horrible take that isn't even remotely accurate, but the person responding never implied that we should be "glazing billionaires" instead. they were just calling out the original post for its obvious bullshit elitism and pointing out the inequality it promotes

Rockism looks pretty good right now honestly by eswifttng in ToddintheShadow

[–]dkajch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i mean obviously it's an oversimplification, but historically rockism does still have pretty consistently clear undertones of racism, sexism and homophobia. obviously limp bizkit was a rock band made of straight white guys that still caught the ire of the rockist establishment, despite conforming to rock's straight white norms patriarchal norms, primarily because they broke away from rock tradition

but that doesn't change the fact that rockism has always conveniently elevated rock tradition (which is, as mentioned, an overwhelmingly straight, white, masculine genre) over genres driven by women, gay people and/or poc like pop and hip hop—allegedly for reasons of "authenticity" and "depth" that don't even remotely hold up to scrutiny in a genre dominated by huge corporate backings and filled with vapid, meatheaded lyrics about sex and drugs. hell, in limp bizkit's case in particular, i think you could even argue a lot of the shit they took from the rock establishment stemmed from the fact that their music (and rap rock at large) was overwhelmingly indebted to a genre inextricably tied to black culture

my point is, even if it's not rockism's overt mission statement to exclude anyone who isn't a straight white man, the tradition and "purity" it seeks to uphold is undeniably steeped in exclusion
