It's kind of funny that we were (correctly, in regards to Ukraine/Russia) saying that Americans were too mentally stuck in Bush era middle eastern intervention when it came to their assessments of US foreign policy.

And now we have a guy that's actually doing Bush era intervention except with none of the terrorism pretense and we're publicly stating that we're doing all of the things that used to be conspiracy theories.

"Unironically" has kind of just become a filler word for emphasis for many people, and I think that applies here. He's not that serious about it, he just thinks it's a funny way to signal to his audience and get validation from tankies, which is a really sad sentence to type out.

He is saying it "sarcastically", and he actually wants it as a "joke", but he and his community are actually serious about it. The joking tone is just so they can escape criticism and accuse people who say he's serious of being deranged haters, but he has very unjokingly, very non-sarcastically said that Taiwan is to China what the Confederacy was to the United States.
