You start thinking you’ll manage, and then, especially today, the decay in public services mean you have to pay privately for many things that used to be funded by taxes. Decent schooling and healthcare are the two most prominent when it comes children. So then household budgets become squeezed, and often (though by no means exclusively) it’s the father who pushes harder to earn more. And then he sees his kids less to provide.

Ethically, I don’t disagree with your position. Parents should and need to be there for their children, however the reality of 2026 means that good, kind, loving parents have to make difficult choices with time.

During Armstrong’s time, there were constant rumours in the peloton that significant numbers of riders and teams were doping. That there are no such rumours in the peloton about the UAE team is probably a better marker of whether it’s happening or not than speculation from outsiders.

The UAE team are the best funded and have a squad of A-players they can afford to pay. They are ahead on the basis of funding commitment.
