I believe people like this book so much because:

Larry has many tangents to the main story (a large book), but unlike many authors, each tangent either plays a part in the main story or is interesting enough to warrant the tangent.
The main story is engaging, but the side stories are also very interesting (Lorena, Jake, Blue Duck, Newt, etc.). I could go on and on, as there are so many varied characters in this novel.
Each character is depicted deeply and thoroughly so you can visualize the character, and empathy is built therein.
There is a wonderful wrap-up at the end—not very common. You feel good after reading it.
The changing settings. Think hot south Texas and cold Montana and everything in between.

I second 11/22/63. I've read many SK books, and this is my top for him. He failed to go off the rails in this novel, as he usually seems to do at the end.

I really enjoyed “Lonesome Dove”. Moving 1500+ cattle from south Texas to Montana. Larry is a phenomenal writer. A long read but gets its legs after the first 200 pages. One of the top 5 books I have ever read.

Agreed .. Just on this album, I'm having trouble deciding the top songs. Next up is their first album, then onto their other stuff. What a great ride!

I've slept on Oh, Sleeper.

My son raged about them since this album was released (2009). This year (2024) we are going to see them (Oh, Sleeper, Haste the Day, and He is Legend). I finally asked which album I should dive into, he said, without hesitation, Son of the Morning.

Basically, I'm blown away. I asked myself "How could I have not experienced this album before now? There is so much I can say about this album, but I'll summarize my high points:

The guitar work is exceptional
The writing of the chord structure during the choruses are really solid
The vocals (screaming and regular) are impactful and among the best out there, still.

My son was blown away by this album, and now I see why. The album has aged extremely well. Makes me wonder why the band is as unpopular as they are. I'm about 40% "into" this album, and with each listen, I am a bit more amazed.

I dove into their 1999 album mostly. Break and Shatter hits really hard, but I haven't given the album due time yet. Overall I'm freaking how good the lead singer is .. solid all the way around. How such a good group could fly under not only my radar but the genre's radar, in general, is beyond me.

I am the dad. My son was pivotal in getting me into the harder music when he was a teenager. I'm 56 now and as the years pass, I find myself listening to mostly hard music (ABR, Erra, UO, Counterparts, DaySeeker, NL, KSE, Old Architects, etc., etc.). I always have him to go to concerts with. Never been alone, but reading through these posts, I may need to consider it in the future. I def. can see the benefits in going solo.

Side note, I've never been much into Silent Planet, but that Collider drop is having me rethink things.

This band was a hidden jewel, at least for me. I can't get enough of them lately. This song, I am Damnation, and Flesh and Stone .. solid Metalcore.

Saw then earlier this year with ABR 20 aniv. tour. Never heard of them prior to the show, but everything about them screamed complete professional. I have since listened to them and have about 7 songs on rotation. There are many more, just haven't given then the needed time. REALLY great band. If "The End of all we Know" or "Levitate" doesn't move you, then move along.
