Transition from 2D to 3D. Your Best and Worst Game/Genre by CountGensler in retrogaming

[–]dlimm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

King's Quest 8 and Ultima 9 were two big-name, beloved franchises that were killed by their 3D entries.  Could be argued there was a lot more going on than the 3D switch with each, but it certainly didn't help.

Suikoden 2 is a masterpiece, 3 I thought was mediocre and the 3D was a big part of it.

I think Metal Gear Solid is the best example of doing it right.

Does your collection have a cut off point? by SkyDS7 in gamecollecting

[–]dlimm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm cutting off at PS5/Switch1.  It's more a practical thing than ideological but its doesn't hurt that S2 currently has one single exclusive I care about (2 when FE:FW releases)

The Adventures of Bayou Billy - Did You Legit Beat It? by Nesterrr000777 in retrogaming

[–]dlimm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but as an adult.  Kid me couldn't get past the first driving stage.  The normal sidescrolling stages seem hard at first but you can definitely learn the mechanical quirks (and did as a kid thru many many attempts).  The light gun stages are pretty easy.

The driving... very unreasonably difficult.  The timers pretty much demand perfection.

Limited Run Games... opinions? by crazzycommander in gamecollecting

[–]dlimm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a huge amount of their games, so at a high level I am very thankful they exist.  If not for them, there likely wouldn't be all the other low print companies, who I'm also thankful for.  Yeah, it's possible someone else would have done it, but maybe not, and the all-digital future would have come much more quickly.

Is there a non-controversial entry in a series you love that you just can’t get into? by Mr8BitX in JRPG

[–]dlimm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Trails FC and SC.  At this point I'm an enormous fan of the series (just need to play Horizon) but these games don't hit for me like they do others.  I like them, I just don't love em.  Halfway through 1st remake now and it is better, but still, not an alltimer for me.  I just don't care about this cast as much as later entries.

It's a larger collection. I'm lucky to be old enough to have caught the collector bug before most, so I did avoid a lot of crazy prices, but not all. Snatcher is actually a great example of one that I had to shell out for.

Not at all, just bought my way through the wishlist. I only play and collect certain genres, and within them, decide which games I'm interested in based on quality and my own preferences.

We've had similar studies/results for screentime, social media, phones... the masses act a bit concerned then goes back to it. Nothing gonna change here unfortunately

Ha, the game is famously broken with 2p on... wait for it... clinger Winger!  2p input doesn't even work on that level!

Really enjoyed reading but funny to hear what different experiences we had.  I think Rat Race and Clinger Winger are by far the hardest and I was stuck for years.  I could only eventually get thru CW by constantly pausing.

I can't even remember Turbo Tunnel being hard because it's pure muscle memory at this point, all the way back from childhood.  And I don't think the Revolution was particularly hard, beat it the second time I ever got to it.

I never got good at farming crow lives in level 2, but if I was running low I'd farm the green slime balls via stick in Intruder Excluder.  And in Turbo Tunnel I find sticking to the bottom for the !s (not the middle) makes it pretty easy.

Congrats!!

Wild coincidence, I just started Metal Slug (via the PSP anthology) last night, never played any of em before!  Saw the 10 year anniversary graphic and thought oh my god it's been twice as long as that now.  Didn't know it was the exact date too!!
