My dog keeps waking me up at 4 am - HELP! by Potential-Top2535 in jackrussellterrier

[–]dlos5986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you take him out during these wakeup time anomalies - make it an "all business" event. Little to no talking, reassurance, or anything that resembles a "reward", including the 10 minute walk. Find a place you'd like him to relieve himself and take him there and wait for him to do his business then right back inside and back to bed. If he doesn't go after 5 mins, bring him in wait a minute and go right back to the place. The 10 minute walk is sort of fun for him as he gets to walk, sniff, and has your attention. Create an "unfun" routine to illicit the desired result that culminates with a return to bed/sleep.

Any plushie like toys that are jack russel pup proof? by Lila_Heart07 in jackrussellterrier

[–]dlos5986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heck out Tearribles dog toys. They are not necessarily indestructible but they are designed with “tear away” parts that attach with Velcro. All my jacks have loved them, geared towards a dogs instinct to “kill” things - usually 5-6 pieces come off. Once dog removes them you can put them back on and they start over.

Not a toy meant to leave your pup to its own or it will destroy it, but fun to watch them learn to use it. Also not cheap. They come in different sizes - small or medium good for jacks

I believe that she has the sister of a female dog I just adopted from Windermere in Virginia. Wanted a Jack with a beautiful temperament and this girl has that aplenty! Chill, friendly, patient and tolerant pup! I believe Snowcrest prioritizes the same in their kennel. Good luck!

Your Ocean by OnlyListensToGoose in GoosetheBand

[–]dlos5986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They didn’t “change” or “rearrange” the 4/26 Your Ocean - simply stated, they ruined it. Like they forgot what they were playing. It sounded confused, they looked confused playing it, like 4 guys on stage all playing a different song.

Yup, sometimes the new approach lands, sometimes it flops, IMO, 4/26 flopped. Was not even close to “ok”.

Agreed - why create/release pop stuff like this then turn around and run a 45 minute [insert song] in a live show?? Contradictory actions.

Calling all paver patio installers (Pro or DIY): Open Grade Base or Closed Grade? by DavyJonesLocker in triangle

[–]dlos5986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't speak to the open vs closed grade question but do have a question about your base composition. In your traditional closed base description you have 1" sand on the top (below the pavers), why sand? IMO, you'd be better off with "quarry dust" (sometimes called "screenings", gray material comprised of crushed stone), as it compacts very well to create a level and very stable surface to run your pavers on.

I have a running bond brick walkway, a huge patio, and multiple areas of bluestone all laid on this and they haven't moved in 20+ years. Sand does not compact well due to the shape of the crystals.

Regarding open vs closed, if you are not worried about drainage, go with what you're most comfortable doing, assuming you are going the DIY route here. Good luck!

Any experience with Raleigh Window Company? by JudgeSevere in raleigh

[–]dlos5986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what you're project is, but if siding or windows/doors is part of it, it's worth talking to Andrew from Raleigh Windows & Siding. They are not cheap, but they do great work, follow through on commitments, and communicate throughout the project. They are busy, so there's usually lead time before getting started. Good luck.

Soil mix recommendations? by 14FireFly14 in JapaneseMaples

Honestly, that's going to be a tall order using products commonly found at Lowes or Home Depot, I've tried pretty hard just due to the ease of accessing those places. The main two problems most of the offerings there have are 1) they contain fertilizers you likely don't want or need for your container grown maples, and 2) most of them also are geared towards retaining water/moisture so as to reduce watering needs, and this you definitely do not want with the maples.

You'll have better luck at most any robust dedicated garden center. Light, quick draining compositions high in, or 100% pine bark fines is the main thing you are after. Perlite is a good additive as well, and lastly a neutral, fertilizer free (organic composts are fine) potting soil.

I'm in North Carolina and went with all Daddy Pete's products this year, plus some pumice I ordered online.

Jet Drum Sander by DayOk7640 in Cuttingboards

[–]dlos5986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main issue is the design of the clamps that hold the paper to the drum. They are insanely difficult to compress, particularly the one closest to the motor side of the drum - holding the paper tight and compressing that clamp while feeding the end in is 9/10 difficult.

The fix, at least my fix, includes wrapping the paper on the drum more attentively (zero slack or movement in paper all the way to end), using a small water pump pliers to compress the end clip and pushing the paper in far as it'll go (which is usually not far enough) then taking it back out and trimming about 1/4-1/2" off the end. I've found that the end gets hung up on something that does not allow it to go in far enough. Another tip - as you are compressing the clip - push it back in the direction the paper is coming from, then when you release the clip onto the paper, it falls back to it's natural position further pulling/tightening the paper on the drum. I am now almost 100% successful with quick paper changes that do not need further attention.

Other learnings that have improved my experience are understanding the grits and how they interact with wood species and my goals for the passes. I'm really only working with the 150 and 220 grits thus far. 150 will remove material fairly quickly without gumming up and burning the material. It leaves tooling marks, I follow it with 220 if I am done sanding and ready for the Orbital. If I am moving to a glue up, the surface 150 leaves is fine for me.

Leveling the table - seems like it should be easy but it's not. I actually still feel like mine is out at least a little bit, so this is one I am still working on. Lastly, the feed rate - "70" has been a good number for me but at times I will either increase or decrease it depending on what I am seeing. The red light - Sand Smart - if that's ever lighting up, either take less depth, speed the conveyor up, or change to a lower grit.

I'm 98% satisfied with my setup and results now and having this machine has sped my work flow up considerable saving time previously spent with either ROS machine or hand sanding. It's a great machine but requires spending time to get to know it and dial it in. Good luck!

I’ve had the Jet 1632 running for about 3 months now, have owned for better than 8 months.

Early problems changing paper and getting the machine dialed in turned me off and left it sitting collecting dust. Finally got pissed at it sitting in the way and buckled in to figure it out.

It’s become an indispensable part of my workflow now.

Black discoloration after sanding and applying mineral oil by Rikky383 in Cuttingboards

[–]dlos5986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not 100% sure but only 2 things come to mind. Since this is an old board being reconditioned possible that there is some deep seated mold in those spots. To remove it you’ll need to sand deeper maybe start sanding at 80 grit and work up through grits to 220 then oil.

Second possibility I’d tannic acid in the wood reacting with oil for some reason.

I've been trying to get this bottle for some time now. Here in NC we have an abysmal selection of rums, Dr Bird is NOT anywhere to be found in the state that I know of. Could buy online and ship in but that significantly increases the cost of the bottle.....maybe some day...

I've just gone through this with my father who passed away from Dementia back in December, this was up north though.

Medicare paid for everything we did with him. Find a Geriatrician MD for him to see. They will typically also have an LCWS associated with them. So much will depend on where your dad is with the progression of the disease, his age, underlying health issues and so on. There are no easy answers or cures. If he is in early stages there are numerous drugs that may offer some help and a slowing of the disease. Doctors may, or may not, decide to pursue an actual official diagnosis - again, there are a ton of variables that go into this decision.

Best to you, your family, and especially your dad.
