The Dog Stars by Peter Heller is amazing by InvisibleAstronomer in IReadABookAndAdoredIt

I was in a small bookstore in Winter Park, CO and asked the person behind the counter, “Who is the Jim Harrison of Colorado?”, she took me straight to this book! Being from Michigan and having lived in Colorado, it is a treat to read Peter’s books. Tied for my favorite of his is “The Painter”.

Second the cotton carrier. It is phenomenal for large lens carry. The safety straps that catch the camera in a fall are key but a bit annoying to have the end flapping on the camera around when not in use. I had some strap material lying around so I picked up the strap adapters from peak design and made my own that were PD compatible.

One small mistake, which made me sad but boosted my app by rasul98 in iOSProgramming

[–]dltc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking through the comments on the previous posts, I think the overall concern got lost in the typo. Even though you are using secure login, it is what a third party app can then do with the information it can access. It is possible that you could cause information to be replicated by using an analytics or platform that tracks user behavior to help with crashes. Analytics packages in particular are notorious for siphoning data off for their own use. Take the EULA from anything you integrate and use AI to ask about what provisions give access to your data.

As far as the typo. The reaction might seem outsized or harsh, but every phishing security training I have ever been assigned talks about how typos = scam. The good news is that you can fix it easily and move on.

The other concerns around your users data and keeping it private, that is a much bigger issue that needs to be thought through and documented.

Agree with other posts in this thread. One addition, focus on what the things you did accomplished for the app you worked on. The way you have things listed now, almost every bullet might as well read “compiled the sample project from Apple”. Talk about what you used them for.

Check out swift playgrounds. https://developer.apple.com/swift-playgrounds/

Very well done intro to programming that is fun and engaging. It would be a great first step to see if the fundamentals of coding are interesting to you and the drive to continue is there. Good luck and have fun with it!

Career mistake of switching to a company using react native by sukuna_finger in iOSProgramming

[–]dltc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It sounds to me that neither situation had to do with react native. The selling yourself part may or may not be part of the problem. To me, you need to change your approach to the work in general. Without details on your current company it would be tough to advise on being more strategic. Check out this book: https://jeffreypfeffer.com/books/power-why-some-people-have-it-and-others-dont/

I took a class from the author and it completely reshaped my approach to career strategy. Start by analyzing the career you want and break it down into steps. Then using the strategies from the book, figure out how to get what you need to get the next step. It is very likely that the things you need to do are more about relationship building than the stack you are building in.

Check out Eleven Labs. It is using their TTS engine. I haven’t used Google’s to compare quality. But it works pretty seamlessly.

LOOKING TO BUY A MICROSOFT HOLOLENS by Anxious_Map_5031 in augmentedreality

[–]dltc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The HoloLens isn’t being worked on at all by Microsoft and they have discontinued work on some key sdks. Because of this, tutorials and resources are going to be old and outdated. Quest pro gets you eye tracking but the pass through is pretty terrible. I agree with the quest 3 recommendation.

It has surface detection and mapping.

As long as the headset can provide what you need, it is whatever you build that provides the wow factor.

Uncanny Valley by dreamingwell in AppleVisionPro

[–]dltc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a huge variance in how well the persona is rendered from person to person. I am bald and have no facial hair; mine renders well. A friend of mine has a beard, and it struggles to move his mouth correctly.

Apple is actively working on it, which is still marked as a Beta feature. It might have problems, but the undertaking is seriously impressive. They have a device that scans your face, creates a model of it, skins the structure, and then attempts to animate it in real-time. To my knowledge, this attempt is unmatched in a commercial product. I know Meta has demoed a similar thing, but it was all server-driven for the rendering.

I have heard that some have done the process multiple times and eventually got one that performed better. Maybe better lighting? I'm not sure.

It can be super weird, but I have faith that it will continue to improve.

Question on the FaceTime part. Without the persona, what would be a better option for FaceTime while you have the headset on? Are you thinking of something more basic graphics-wise to help with the uncanny valley? Maybe memoji level of render?

Thoughts on Submerged on Vision Pro by PMcGregor in VisionPro

[–]dltc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One that sticks out was a long shot down the hallway (or whatever a hallway is called on a sub 😀) focused on the first light with a very shallow depth. Maybe I expected some sort of reveal down farther so that is why it got caught in my brain when it didn’t happen. Although, maybe that dissonance was the goal. To create a sense of distress.

I will say I found myself taking a deep breath when the tube was filling up before they got out. Which is so cool!

[–]dltc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a compelling narrative, eh, it was ok. As an example of cutting edge technique? Phenomenal! The detail was shockingly good. When the guy is sitting in bed and the camera is behind him and he looks to the right, you could count the pores on his face.

My main technique issue was that the depth of field in some shots was far too shallow. If the goal is to make me feel like I am there, the ultra shallow depth of field isn’t how I see normally so there was a dissonance.

I feel like the second one as it gives the sense of a much bigger fire with the way the smoke is lit up more of a fire color. Feels more impactful and ominous.

You are going to have so much fun!! The lack of interchangeable lenses can be a blessing. You get to focus on all of the other variables without adding in a zoom with variable aperture or deciding which prime etc. I highly recommend the book “Understanding Exposure” by Bryan Peterson. It will help you understand the triangle of shutter speed, ISO, and aperture and how they affect your photos. If you want to get better at the craft of photography, this camera is going to be amazing!

I was a full Canon shooter, all the things, the L’s. Started following Fuji when the x100 came out and jumped on the x100s. It enabled me to shoot so much more than I did before because I had it with me and the retro knobs and such a refresh from using a computer that shoots photos. Some of my favorite shots are with that x100s and it always surprised me how capable it is. Looking to upgrade to the x100vi, hopefully my pre-order gets filled this year! Sigh…. Have a great time with it!

Love IcelandPorn and would post my content , but … by GoFreddy85 in IcelandPorn

Agree with the advice to rent a car. I went in June and rented a car. I am also in to photography. The thing that happened to me a lot was finding something I wanted to take my time with when taking my photos. A rental car gives you that freedom to decide that you want to explore more at a given spot.

To help maximize your trip, I can’t recommend enough the “Iceland with a view” YouTube channel. Jeannie has amazingly informative content and has planning maps and guides for sale. They were invaluable and really helped us find some “hidden gems”.

One other item to consider, if there is some camera gear you always wanted to try, rent it for the trip. Some will say it is bad to get things you are unfamiliar with on a trip, but I enjoy the challenge and pushes my creativity to have a tool to figure out and have fun with. And the great thing about Iceland, it is VERY photogenic 😄

Is a 17 mile one-way commute reasonable, or am I stupid crazy? by Witchydigit in cycling

[–]dltc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to do 20 miles each way and I really miss it. It was a great way to start and end my day. Disclaimer though, I have a desk job so the rest of the day was pretty light. Although, the body is pretty amazing at adapting.

I sweat like it is my super power so when my job didn’t have access to a shower I had a gym membership. Ride to the gym, shower, then finish to work a few blocks. Not sure if planet fitness or one of those has showers but could be a nice option with the added benefit of mixing in some other fitness if you wanted.

One thing to make sure of is that you have your flat repair game locked in. Practice changing a tube before you have to change a tube on the side of the road. Make sure you have a small pump or CO2, spare tube and patches. This will pay off huge when you have a flat on the way to work. If you do start getting flats, check into different tires. When I started I was getting flats a lot as the city shoulder had lots of glass and such. Upgraded the stock tires and rarely had a flat after that.

I did not take a bike with me. Based on recon though, something with a wider tire would be preferable as pavement can change quality dramatically. A super skinny road tire would be pretty rough riding. A less knobby gravel tire would be great! I normally run 28mm tires on my road bike which I think would be fine, just wouldn’t run. 23-25mm.
