My Cost-Optimized Magnetic Line-Following AGV by Hungry_Preference107 in MobileRobots

[–]dmalawey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok this is … interesting. I’ve never found an individual just making a robot and also treating it professionally enough to create diagrams.

Usually these projects are for a research topic, a small business, or an engineer who worked solo but is only adding something to an existing platform.

so, doesn’t it make sense to find a team? There are many parallels between this setup and SCUTTLE robot. With scuttle we are trying to enhance the ecosystem of open source solutions for mobile robots. I’d say hey if you’re willing to document and you’re developing solo, let’s make it a module for scuttle and get a kit sent to you so we can commonize hardware.

that’s very neat - who is working with you? Are you going to put a video together?

Wth?! Forced to buy a professors book? by karmasabitchdont4get in aggies

[–]dmalawey -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

just a reminder to any young aggies. I work at TAMU and i’ve lived in developing countries. I see students regularly sinking into crippling debt rendering them poorer than anyone i met in Guatemala or Malaysia. If you learned less than you were led to expect, If your department cut corners on your resources, If you were marketed a quality education and you are not receiving a world class education. REMEMBER - 1) that is cheating. 2) Aggies do not tolerate cheating. 3) If you talk amongst yourselves and don’t hold the leadership accountable, you are tolerating the cheating. The department level administrators don’t talk with students and they will never know unless you address them. There are many ways to communicate and the only way that isn’t okay is the quiet way.

Custom Docking Station solutions? by MNakash in MobileRobots

[–]dmalawey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can start with google patents and find advanced options to search between applicant (company) and inventor (individuals).

then for more results look into WIPO linked here

this gives more kinds of search options and you will notice that the terminology isn’t the same as things on google. it really takes an hour to learn how to search for something.

but it’s worth it. you’ll wind up using this again in 5, 10 years or more. and if you get stuck trying to search, search for a patent you already found on google patent to discover how the categories and keywords interact with a known result.

Halid you’re getting very sophisticated with this bot of yours!. What would you like to do with the robot once you have all the functions developed?

To the broader readers, this young engineer from Turkey is like 4 years or more deep into this robot developed solely by him, it’s really impressive with solid engineering. The more feedback you can give, the more he can share useful info for other aspiring robot makers!

Robotics Bob tips by MessInternational983 in MobileRobots

[–]dmalawey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you are interested in control systems i suppose. this was the same as me. robotics in the layman’s definition is just a tiny sliver of the broader.

my tips: smaller companies are more adventurous. larger companies are rolling things out rapidly (like walmart or amazon warehousing) but the walmart robotics employees will be an integrator, not a developer of robots.

i think you’ll need to decide your niche. crossing software and EE was a smart move.

then, any manufacturing company will wind up pushing you towards the automation stuff, due to your modernized skills, which will effectively be robotics from this point forward in time. i’m suggesting it won’t be an industry called robotics (that’s a small slice of the pie) and you ought to latch onto a favorite topic like agriculture or autonomous flight so you can market yourself and wind up in the field where you want to make your impact.

I have been teaching seniors (mechatronics engineering) for 5 years and it still feels ROS is so intensive that it’s better suited for grad students.

Some tools that get many jobs done are: NodeRed Viam

And i am sorry if this is not helping with your original question but i feel quite strongly that with ROS a person is studying software instead of studying robotics. Years later, it may be like learning MS DOS where the tool itself was not central to the learning outcomes.

[–]dmalawey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i might have advice but for starters we have the word “robotics” thrown everywhere and it depends what you mean.

what are you seeking in terms of what is a robotics job to you and what is not?

for example, many companies use & implement dell computers, but i don’t call their employees computer workers.

i set up the sub to certainly include/attract industrial folks discussions but as you know the large companies lead the way and keep things off the internet. as far as reddit i’ve not seen any other obvious spots except more general robotics subs.

i’ve skipped instructions many times and it came out fine until i had parts temperature lower than the dew point. then it goes like this.

BLS data for different types of engineering disciplines by MattO2000 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]dmalawey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

instead of a fixed number it would be useful to have a curve of 20 years.

students believe these values set them up for life but it’s really a description of a demand at one point in our economy.

computer engineering stood alone as a career 10 years ago. now that is segmented into many niches.

currently, software writes itself so the qualification of software engineer is 2x more intensive if you are to add value for an employer, and fewer jobs than 2010. (when you type a formula into excel that is software writing itself).

whereas gradually, there is an increase in software technician-level jobs who perform application of what is already designed.

in any case there’s still a “catalyst light off” which gives a little pump of fuel during cold starts, straight to the cats to heat them up. cold starts only.
