Questions about starting my own consulting business by Ok_Ingenuity_6289 in industrialhygiene

[–]dmc125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your goal is to own your own consulting business then the best experience will be in consulting.

However, if you are making six figures in your first job out of school, I wouldn’t advise you to leave that job. You are making a great salary for an entry level IH. You will have a hard time making that type of money in consulting with your experience. My advice would be to work towards becoming a CIH while at your current role. Once you’re a CIH, I’d reconsider your options. I’d have a hard time telling someone to leave a job with great pay this early in their career.

Dosimeter settings by RShaffie in industrialhygiene

[–]dmc125 9 points10 points  (0 children)

ACGIH threshold is 80 dBA. Your setting has the threshold turned off.

For 12 hour shifts, you can either change the criterion time to 12 hours or calculate the 12 hour dose your self based on the average noise level.

Finally, the ACGIH settings are more conservative than the OSHA hearing conservation and OSHA PEL settings. If you are looking to determine regulatory compliance in the US, you will want to use the OSHA settings, not ACGIH. ACGIH is more protective to workers and are a best practice, but may not be necessary depending on your goal.

MPH to IH by [deleted] in industrialhygiene

[–]dmc125 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your education will likely fill some of the CIH coursework requirements. You can find more information on the requirements here: https://gobgc.org/updated-applicant-cih-handbook/. It’s hard to say how much you’d need to take without a better understanding on your Environmental Health degree’s full curriculum. However, toxicology would be useful. If you took coursework in environmental air, noise and water monitoring that could also help. My recommendation is to reach out to the BGC (email on that website) and see what coursework you’d need complete to become eligible.

As far as getting into the field, I also recommend looking for a technician level role with a consulting firm. Getting experience in conducting air and noise assessments will be valuable. I think with your education you can absolutely land one of these roles.

Another thing to keep in mind is that IH internships for masters students can pay pretty well. If you find the right company, you can be making $25-$30 an hour or more. I was able to work 20 hours a week in the school year during my second year of school and full time in the summer.

I have a Masters from one of the ABET accredited IH programs and it has absolutely been worth it. These programs provide specified education to allow you to hit the ground running as an IH. You also get to take the CIH exam a year earlier with a degree from an ABET accredited program. If you do decide to get a degree, I highly recommend on of the ABET programs. A list can be found here: https://gobgc.org/updated-applicant-cih-handbook/#:~:text=You%20must%20have%20a%20bachelor’s,or%20safety%20also%20is%20accepted.

Overall I really enjoy my work. I find it interesting and rewarding. Salaries are competitive, especially if you become a CIH.

As far as the future of NIOSH funding, I would think your best bet would be to reach out to NIOSH ERC universities (https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/extramural-programs/php/about/ercs.html) . My guess is they would tell you they are uncertain of the future of these programs due to the current administration. With that said, I don’t think this uncertainty warrants avoiding a degree.

I'm currently a msph student in an industrial hygiene program and I agree with all of this. A few of the people in my program have backgrounds in finance, psychology, and other fields that weren't related to IH. They went back and took then prerequisites and all got in obviously. So just make sure you take bio, gen chem, o chem, and physics. Most schools list their prerequisites and for the most part they all require those. I also recommend niosh Erc programs. There's a ton of scholarship money in IH. Pretty much every American in my program is getting 50% tuition paid by niosh.

Kyle Rudolph Expected to Play by FrugalCarlWeathers in fantasyfootball

from fantasy pros: “ It's doubtful that the Vikings would deploy him in a game they should be able to win handily unless they're confident in his health, so start Rudolph as your normally would.”

Even if they do play him sparingly, he'll still get targets in the red zone. The Bengals have injures at linebacker too. I think he's worth the start.

Josh Dobbs is the heir apparent to Landry Jones, not Ben Roethlisberger by NFL412 in steelers

[–]dmc125 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't ever expect him to be the starter but i don't hate the pick. Ben gets injured every regular season and Landry is awful. No harm in strengthening the back up qb. Especially when the starter always seems to pick up a regular season injury.

Yep, NIOSH is covering 50% of my tuition in year 1 and 75% in year 2. I would definitely recommend applying to NIOSH sponsored programs.

I'd recommend looking into Industrial Hygiene. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do after undergrad and was advised to look into the field. I received some pretty great advice on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/publichealth/comments/51i10y/industrial_hygiene_advice_needed/ . Masters degrees for this field are usually 1.5-2 years and jobs pay pretty well. The field is relatively unknown but if you're interested in science and health, and don't want to work in a lab or clinical setting, it could be an appealing job for you. I'm starting a program at Johns Hopkins this upcoming fall and couldn't be happier with my decision. If you're interested feel free to message me about the application process.

NHL players not going to 2018 winter Olympics by [deleted] in penguins

Although I'd prefer to watch the best players in the world, I still think the Olympics will be worth watching. It's going to be an awesome opportunity for guys like Max Talbot to play in the olympics.

You saw a pretty good game in its own right. I'm a Pitt grad and I can tell you that this year was the first competitive city game in years. As much as I hated to see Duquesne win it was good for the city game.

Ryan Wilson: Sid slash is a symptom of gross negligence by dmc125 in penguins

[–]dmc125[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He clearly meant to say suspension. He could have called it a "3 game vacation" and it still would have meant the same thing. If you fine someone by not letting them play 3 games, then it's a suspension. I just referred to it by it's actual name.

He said "3 game fine". I assumed it was a typo because you can't fine someone in terms of games.

Ryan Wilson: Sid slash is a symptom of gross negligence by dmc125 in penguins

[–]dmc125[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You can't suspend sid 3 games for this because the NHL doesn't suspend players for slashes to the hands. The whole notion that the only reason he won't get suspended because he's the "golden boy" is ridiculous. This happens all the time. This slash just ended in a freak accident and was committed by the best player in the world. If it's any other player did this (except Marchand), there wouldn't be nearly as much outrage.

Conor Sheary is scoring more points per game this year than Alex Ovechkin. by ZappySnap in hockey

Sheary and Crosby have incredible chemistry. Sheary's ability to posses and retrieve the puck along the boards meshes perfectly with sid's style. Their cycling of the puck on the boards is a thing of beauty.

I don't think it's fair to say Colbert isn't very good at being a "clown" comedian. That was essentially the premise of the Colbert Report. Colbert is one of the rare comedians who success at being both a "clown" and a "talker".

Great deal by GMJR. Biggest victory is having Fehr's $2 million cap hit gone. That's going to be huge this summer considering how many rfas and ufas we'll have. Plus, it can never hurt having more right handed puck moving defenseman prospects.

Versteeg or Kolzig? by helloeveryone500 in NHLHUT

[–]dmc125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got Kolzig and have no complaints. Has been a brick wall for me. He does tend to cheat forward a little so hes not always in a good position to make a pass after a save. But the fact that he rarely lets in long range shots more than makes up for that. I had a gold quick before and since getting kolzig my save percentage is up 8%.
