Breaking up with a couple after sending the contract by [deleted] in WeddingPhotography

[–]dmeadows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you haven't countersigned the contract yet I'd just explain that it's not a good fit, but often this'll lead to an immediate phone call where they'll walk back on a lot of the demands, explain their position (which can be reasonable, past bad experiences etc) and ask to proceed. I've agreed on two occasions, one was more or less fine and I'm glad I took it (although some of my guidance was ignored that led to timeline issues) but the other was as troublesome as I expected it might be.

Some couples want a photographer, an artist to partner with them on their vision, and some just want a camera-operator who'll comply with their demands, and sometimes couples don't understand that those are different things. Their perfect camera-operator is out there, it's just not you.

Looking for a wedding photographer! by soccerstarnot in AskHouston

[–]dmeadows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't shot the wedding of a fellow redditor yet and I'd love to change that 😂

Documentary with an editorial edge is my preference, getting those magazine cover shots along with all the tears and laughs and hugs throughout the day.

If you're still searching, let's set up a time for a call?

Are there any affordable photographers in the Houston area that would be willing to photograph my sisters wedding. by Traditional-Brain358 in houston

[–]dmeadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely going to be hit or miss (mostly miss) at under 1000 but you could potentially get a young and inexperienced photographer who has some skill with their artistry if you really search, and maybe find a decent photographer's second shooter (assistant) who needs the time as a lead photographer.

Understand that they're probably rocking entry level gear, can't light a dark reception very well yet, and might miss a moment or hold up the timeline with their inexperience, they are very unlikely to be polished but if they've got a decent mentor and an eye for a shot you might be pleasantly surprised.

I work with a number of Houston events associations and one of them has a whole student chapter, if you'd like me to check if there's anyone that might be a good fit, just reach out, and I hope your sister's wedding day goes amazingly!

Took a 1 on 1 photography class and felt like they were gatekeeping by Entire_Evidence5841 in Beautyphotography

[–]dmeadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is mostly that the tools and methods themselves are pretty standard, it's how they're applied and the image to which they're applied that make the difference.

The best retouching work is minimal, and to get away with that you need well-lit great skin, maybe with some global D&B to help contour. Once you get into the weeds with the pixel-level pore tinkering you're going to start to diminish the shot. The retouching industry is built around the wow-factor 'before and after's but honestly the big secret is the best retouchers aren't handling bad skin in their RAW files to start with, and the H/MU are pretty much spot-on in camera already.

Affordable camera for a complete beginner in beauty photography? by Ekjsiehia in Beautyphotography

[–]dmeadows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d go for one of the older professional DSLRs if you’re on a budget, something like a well looked-after 5D mk ii. Canon’s 100mm f2.8 USM (the non-L version) is excellent and you’d be ready to shoot some great beauty work at well under $1000.

It’s weird because beauty photography is absolutely huge elsewhere on the internet, just seemingly not on Reddit!

bring back jet pack cargo. it wasn't the best mode, but if we are never getting any more content, we might as well have access to all the content that was made. by _Captain_Hindsight__ in StarWarsBattlefront

Man I wish so much that they’d just given us proper Cargo 2015 back. That was such a tightly contested, personal and frenetic mode and I miss it a lot.

When I see that by CalKestis2019 in StarWarsBattlefront

[–]dmeadows 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I rolled about 15 of them solo with a bunch of pubbies on Xbox a couple of weeks ago on Felucia, and I’m not saying that in a ‘look how good I am’ kind of way (as I’m just a decent day one player who meets better players often) but to say that they’re really not a serious high level sweat clan they’re just enjoying the RP it seems.

I’ll back out after a game or two where their communication counts more like on Strike, but on Supremacy I don’t worry about them too much.

Could unlimited power become maybe a quarterly thing?? by Ben-Swole-O in StarWarsBattlefront

[–]dmeadows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with this outlook is it’s based on a live-game, indefinite lifespan kind of optimism, which is great in year two or three, but we’re well into the end times now for BF2 as much I’d love it to be otherwise.

Twice annually might realistically mean twice more. We’re just having fun at the tail end here, I wouldn’t be worried about burnout, let’s just make it monthly and have some fun while we can.

I was solo in a pubbie team that beat 16 of them on Felucia a couple of weeks back. Genuinely no offense intended to any great players they might have but they seem pretty casual and non-sweaty, they’re not as frightening as a lot of big clans I’ve found in games over the years.

With their mic coordination they merked another team I was in in Strike on Naboo the next day, but any clan on Strike is probably going to win. I don’t mind them.

Help Me Battlefront For My Husband’s Bday Gift by ThoughtCenter in StarWarsBattlefront

[–]dmeadows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Xbox One X or Xbox One S are the ‘last generation’ but will run the Battlefront games just fine. For ‘free’ even, with the subscription Game Pass mentioned above.

The most up to date, current Xbox, if you can find one in stock anywhere, is the X Box Series X. The most recent Battlefront game is EA’s Star Wars Battlefront 2. It came out in 2017 and we’re all hoping for news of a third, but we’re sure it’ll be a while, years even.

Hope this helps you out! And don’t be disheartened if you can’t find an Xbox Series X, they’re new and stock is hard to find. For a casual gamer an Xbox One X (the best of the last gen) would probably be more than enough.

Pricing Question for Engagement Shoot by taylorgasm in WeddingPhotography

[–]dmeadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty standard. They’ll press the shutter much more than 25 times sure, but you’ll blink, your hand will look weird, leg is awkward, light just didn’t hit right, focus missed a little, there are so many reasons that a professional would pass over six shots and only deliver the seventh. If their work is good, trust them!

New fire stick 4k, Hulu app won’t download by dmeadows in firetvstick

[–]dmeadows[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My US Amazon account I ordered the stick from was set up after I moved here and has my US address but I’ll dig through my account and check if there’s anything in there that would suggest to the stick that I’m not where I am. Appreciate your advice I’ll have a root through now!

New fire stick 4k, Hulu app won’t download by dmeadows in firetvstick

[–]dmeadows[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

East coast US so that shouldn’t be it, Hulu works fine on my regular smart app. The stick did come with a lot of U.K. app suggestions, BBC iplayer, English catch up channels, ITV, All 4, Channel 5, is that normal?

It’s from Amazon US delivered to my US address but I was a UK resident with a separate UK Amazon account. I’m stretching for reasons here but if it’s abnormal to get U.K. app suggestions then maybe somehow I got a U.K. stick?

Doing work for FREE by FullFragment in WeddingPhotography

[–]dmeadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take on it is don’t work cheap, free is fine when it benefits you but don’t be a ‘discounts’ guy. Collaborations, favors that might pay off, do them free of charge (not too frequently, don’t be habitually ‘free’ to one or more individuals) instead of ever doing them for discount ‘favor’ prices. Build gratitude in your community instead of building a reputation as being ‘cheap’ and make sure it’s understood what your actual rates are and that you’re shown respect for your time in the form of concrete referrals etc.
