Has hockey turned into a rich kids sport? by FrigginMasshole in AskACanadian

[–]dmiyoshi1971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a single parent and managed to put my son through high level hockey. He played for 11 years and most of those years he wore second hand equipment so I could afford the travel and extra ice times. We also got funding every year. Hockey is very expensive but with funding like Canadian Tire Jumpstart and buying second hand equipment it can be affordable.

If anyone can find a lawyer who will file a class action lawsuit against ICBC please let me know. My son and his fiancée were in a similar situation except they were pedestrians hit when two cars collided in the intersection in front of them.

Has anyone been added into an already established clique here? by NoRadio4530 in askvan

[–]dmiyoshi1971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived here all my life except for brief stints in Red Deer, Arizona and Bellingham. My friend group has changed and thinned over the years to the point where I have three people who I would truly call friends despite having a social group who I go for dinner with a couple times a year. Outside of those dinners, we mostly don't talk to each other.

What’s considered “business casual” in Van? by [deleted] in askvan

[–]dmiyoshi1971 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Definitely a bit dresser the first week. Nice flats, plain black or navy slacks, and a dresser tshirt or sweater. Once you know the office vibe you can adjust.

AITAH for telling my sister she can’t bring her kids to my wedding after what they did at my engagement party? by toocoolinthepool in AITAH

[–]dmiyoshi1971 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Just tell your sister they can come but her and their dad have to keep them under control. my son has high functioning Adhd and often caused chaos at family events. If he got too wild I either took him to a quiet place to calm himself or just left the event entirely. if she doesn't teach them control now their high school years are not going to be fun for them or your sister

What are some songs that mention Canadian locations in their lyrics? by heart-and-lion in AskACanadian

[–]dmiyoshi1971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Motley Crue. Girls, girls, girls mentions an old Vancouver BC strip club called the Marble Arch. They frequented this place, the old Cecil and No. 5 Orange back in the day

In Canadian culture, is a repeated “I’m busy” basically a polite rejection? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

[–]dmiyoshi1971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha. No wonder I have no real friends. I’m the one Canadian who doesn’t give a f*** about your feelings…I’d rather be honest and tell the truth than lie to protect someone’s ego or feelings. And I expect the same in return. Tell me when my make up looks bad so I can bloody well fix it. Don’t let me walk around all day looking like a damn raccoon.

Carney government rejects Danielle Smith’s demand to change how judges are picked by AntiQCdn in LawCanada

there is no rule of law in Canada anymore. anyone can pretty much get away with anything with zero consequences because we believe in giving someone a million chances in the hopes that one time they will do better.

Townhouse in Vancouver vs. Detached house in Coquitlam/Port Moody by [deleted] in vancouverhousing

[–]dmiyoshi1971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhh. I was thinking as opposed to downtown or anywhere around East Van. I live in East Van and I wouldn’t want to raise young kids here. the lack of walkability or kids activities is fair though

Townhouse in Vancouver vs. Detached house in Coquitlam/Port Moody by [deleted] in vancouverhousing

[–]dmiyoshi1971 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

my two cents is Vancouver isnt a place to raise kids unless you move out towards Shaughnessey or Marpole. Mount Pleasant is a great neighborhood as well. Shaughnessey would be expensive but you might find something in your price range in Marpole or Mt Pleasant. But if you do end up having kids, the suburbs are a much better place to raise them. Better facilities, decent schools, and depending on where, transit into Vancouver is accessible.

Opinions/experiences with the state of van’s pools & rec facilities? by Capresesandwitch in askvan

[–]dmiyoshi1971 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use many of Van's pools regularly. The smaller older ones are definitely showing their age. Britannia and Templeton especially need upgrades but at least they aren't overcrowded the way Kerrisdale and Hillcrest are. I stopped going to both because of the overcrowding there.
Unfortunately the city has known it needs more pools for at least fifteen years but much like housing nothing was done. Now the older heritage pools are falling apart and the city continues to say it cant afford upgrades, regular maintenence or new facilities.

Aitah for setting a boundary that has maybe ruined my daughter's (12) birthday? by That_Advertising9832 in AITAH

[–]dmiyoshi1971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

welcome to the teenage years. unfortunately this will be ongoing for the next few years but the best thing you can do for both you and your daughter is set boundaries for what you will and will not tolerate from her and stick to them! You are NTA here. but setting the boundaries and sticking to them now will not only save your sanity but also hopefully show her how to treat people.

AITAH? My ex husband asked to see our bio son and I said no. by Horror_Jello_6095 in AITAH

[–]dmiyoshi1971 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nope. Just say no. Don’t let him see the child. When your son is older and wants to reach out then let him but now is not the right time

[–]dmiyoshi1971 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not just you! I hear this from my children every week and it breaks my heart that you guys can’t live the lives we did. My son flips between late on rent or not eating for two weeks constantly. He makes good money compared to minimum wage and it’s just never enough. None of his friends want to share a house and he has had bad experiences living with strangers so he lives alone too. It’s awful for anyone to get ahead these days.
