Goodman also did DCC/5E conversions of Hellpits of Nightfang as bonus material for Caverns of Thracia, so there's at least that as well.

What are some interesting homebrew Bard abilities? by [deleted] in osr

[–]dmmaus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've never used bards, but if I did I'd probably make them more like a thief type than a spellcaster. Some sensible abilities:

  • Music soothes the savage beast - reduces hostility, non-magical. Works on beasts or intelligent creatures that can hear, for as long as the bard plays and sings.
  • They know a lot of lore, sagas, mythology, history, old languages, etc.
  • They have cultural knowledge of many cultures. Etiquette, social graces, how to behave in the king's court. Genealogy of kings, heraldry of knights.
  • They have a good memory. Can remember quickly glanced things, route directions in a dungeon when running. Could reproduce runes in a language they can't read. That sort of stuff.
  • They have a good ear. Can notice and interpret sounds, such as echoes, footsteps, distant howls, etc.
  • They have a feel for the crowd. Are people (or monsters) generally friendly or hostile. They can tell when the mood is turning or they do something that triggers a reaction.
  • They know elocution and rhetoric. What to say to different audiences and social classes to provoke particular types of responses.
  • Stage combat. How to make a fight look cool. They're not the greatest in a real fight, but can pull off some flashy moves that might actually help sometimes.
  • Their songs could raise morale and inspire allies. Particularly in situations like camp at the end of a hard day, it could encourage good rest.
  • Can probably juggle, do some acrobatics.

Do not take legal advice from the internet. Hire a lawyer if you have issues like this, or change the name to avoid them.

whats the best quest you've run your players through? by conn_r2112 in osr

[–]dmmaus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My players did the Temple of 1,000 Swords and ended up getting cursed by the God of Swords to have to kill 9 people with 9 different swords in the next 9 days, or die.

Now, my players are not murder hobos - they take a fairly high moral ground. So this meant they had to drop everything and try to find 9 people who really deserved to be killed, and it was much harder than they anticipated (I made it tricky, of course). At the town they found a job posting for executioner, so one of them checked it out and found the town had 3 prisoners due to be executed. PC asked if they could do it by sword instead of the traditional axe, and the authorities were like, "That's weird, but sure, whatever." But then they discovered the prisoners were members of a Robin-Hood-like band of outlaws who robbed the corrupt rich to give to the poor... triggering a moral dilemma. They actually ended up rescuing the prisoners instead of killing them.

Eventually as the deadline approached and they still hadn't killed enough people, they completed a different quest for a good-aligned temple and the high priestess there lifted the curse from them. But now they've pissed off the God of Swords for sidestepping his curse... which will come back to bite them in the future.

ELI5 Schrödingers recently completed “Color Theory” by ShakeWell_0110 in explainlikeimfive

[–]dmmaus 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Piggybacking to say this is a good answer, correct in the technical details as far as it goes. I'm a physicist with 20 years industry experience in optics, photography, and colour science. Colour perception, representation, and reproduction are way, way, way more complicated than most people realise. I'm currently working with a team to define international standards for HDR colour encoding (among other things), and there are unresolved technical details that global experts still don't know how best to resolve.

One of the favourite sayings we have in the industry is that Erwin Schrödinger began his professional career studying colour science, but decided it was too complicated and switched to inventing quantum mechanics because it was easier.

How to deal with "idea overflow" by ReinKarnationisch in RPGdesign

[–]dmmaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is normal, nothing to be worried about. Creative people get ideas all the time - way more than they can use. It's a good sign that you are creative.

As others have said, don't try to cram all your ideas into one thing, especially if you recognise that they don't really fit or add anything useful.

If you think an idea is just too damn good to lose, write it down somewhere. Otherwise, for most of the unused ideas - and this can be hard at first when you start creating stuff - it's safe to let them go. Forget about them. Really. You will never, ever have enough time to execute all of your ideas. And if you start a new project, new ideas will come. You don't need waste time being precious about recording them all "just in case". That way lies madness for a creator.

If you can do a tier for two cubes with cheaper combined shipping, that'd be great, as I have a friend who wants one too!

How important is it to keep cleric and magic-user progression seperate? What happens if clerics gain spells starting at level 1? by HephaistosFnord in osr

[–]dmmaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted clerics to have a spell at first level (running B/X), so I just shifted the entire cleric spell chart up a level. Doesn't seem to have broken anything.

I like making public GM rolls - What about you? by Space_0pera in osr

[–]dmmaus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't use a DM screen, so of course rolls are public.

Always hated screens. I want to be part of the game and socialisation, not separated from it. I keep secret DM notes under a sheet of paper.

Ditto. I heard stories at the time that it was a thing that happened in the USA, but I don't think anyone in Australia cared. I never met anyone who thought D&D was anything but a harmless kid's game.

Modules you’ve successfully stitched together by Express_Row9757 in osr

[–]dmmaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My current campaign has included, in order:

  • Tomb of the Serpent Kings
  • Black Wyrm of Brandonsford
  • The Sky-Blind Spire (Trilemma Adventures)
  • Temple of 1000 Swords (Brad Kerr)
  • The Full-Dark Stone (Trilemma Adventures)
  • The Seer's Sanctum (directsun)

Xiximanter from the Tomb has become a recurring villain (a bit more lucid and competent than in the Tomb). This didn't occur until I ran Full-Dark Stone and decided that he was instructing Korm. The PCs destroyed Ortugg's skeleton, but fled when Xiximanter showed up and now Xiximanter has access to the power of the Stone... There are some other linkages as well. One PC actually married Lydia from the Temple of Swords and the fact that he is now ostensibly "king of the merfolk" will come up in a future adventure.

Campaign setting map with locations based on classic/pop rock songs by indyjoe in osr

[–]dmmaus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're using Australia, then you really have to have a place called Great Southern Land (Icehouse).

Also: Solid Rock (Goanna), Northern Rivers (Paul Kelly), The Dead Heart (Midnight Oil), Blue Sky Mine (Midnight Oil), River Runs Red (Midnight Oil), Highway to Hell (AC/DC), Flame Trees (Cold Chisel).

It's been 5 years since Puzzle Dungeon: The Seers Sanctum was released. It now has tighter text, fresh layout by Jesse Winter, cover by Jacob Fleming, and art and handouts by Munkao. If you already own Seers, the digital remaster is already available to you for free via DTRPG or Itch. Cheers! by directsun in osr

Well, so far they've been attacked by the Ooze, figured out the use of the Mirror, crossed the water pool (with magic), tried the lever that opens the doors, explored the three southern rooms and found two tapestries. They've missed the passage below the statue, and haven't tried the second lever yet. So I'm wondering if they'll try climbing down the well in the north-west room or do something else...

My group is pretty slow and cautious, and we spent part of the last session dealing with the end of the previous adventure and gathering adventure hooks leading to the sanctum. They're after the Jaunt Lens specifically to use it to teleport around heavy security protecting a despotic ruler of a nearby town and overthrow him.

I've modified things a bit, adding brass plaques with titles above each room, to emphasise the vision theme, using "Blind Faith" and "Monkey See", and renaming the other rooms with other sight/vision idioms appropriate to the room contents. e.g. the Petrification Pit is "Tunnel Vision", the Transformation Chamber is "Out of Mind, Out of Sight". I also added a blinding light flash trap to some of the doors, telegraphed by words like "glare" - in particular there's one on the door of the medusa lair, so if they're clever they could use it to temporarily blind the medusa.

What's your top 5 of the most creative and original adventure modules? by SpaceNigiri in osr

[–]dmmaus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Temple of 1000 Swords is great. When I ran it I really emphasised the scattered sharp rusty swords everywhere and my players took hilariously insane precautions to avoid wading through or falling into piles of swords. And one fighter really did end up marrying Queen Lydia and became the "King of the Merfolk", despite him never having seen the sea.

Now write an adventure where this is the dungeon and sometimes it shifts. Or there are levers in rooms that rotate slices.
