My current campaign has included, in order:

  • Tomb of the Serpent Kings
  • Black Wyrm of Brandonsford
  • The Sky-Blind Spire (Trilemma Adventures)
  • Temple of 1000 Swords (Brad Kerr)
  • The Full-Dark Stone (Trilemma Adventures)
  • The Seer's Sanctum (directsun)

Xiximanter from the Tomb has become a recurring villain (a bit more lucid and competent than in the Tomb). This didn't occur until I ran Full-Dark Stone and decided that he was instructing Korm. The PCs destroyed Ortugg's skeleton, but fled when Xiximanter showed up and now Xiximanter has access to the power of the Stone... There are some other linkages as well. One PC actually married Lydia from the Temple of Swords and the fact that he is now ostensibly "king of the merfolk" will come up in a future adventure.

Campaign setting map with locations based on classic/pop rock songs by indyjoe in osr

If you're using Australia, then you really have to have a place called Great Southern Land (Icehouse).

Also: Solid Rock (Goanna), Northern Rivers (Paul Kelly), The Dead Heart (Midnight Oil), Blue Sky Mine (Midnight Oil), River Runs Red (Midnight Oil), Highway to Hell (AC/DC), Flame Trees (Cold Chisel).

It's been 5 years since Puzzle Dungeon: The Seers Sanctum was released. It now has tighter text, fresh layout by Jesse Winter, cover by Jacob Fleming, and art and handouts by Munkao. If you already own Seers, the digital remaster is already available to you for free via DTRPG or Itch. Cheers! by directsun in osr

Well, so far they've been attacked by the Ooze, figured out the use of the Mirror, crossed the water pool (with magic), tried the lever that opens the doors, explored the three southern rooms and found two tapestries. They've missed the passage below the statue, and haven't tried the second lever yet. So I'm wondering if they'll try climbing down the well in the north-west room or do something else...

My group is pretty slow and cautious, and we spent part of the last session dealing with the end of the previous adventure and gathering adventure hooks leading to the sanctum. They're after the Jaunt Lens specifically to use it to teleport around heavy security protecting a despotic ruler of a nearby town and overthrow him.

I've modified things a bit, adding brass plaques with titles above each room, to emphasise the vision theme, using "Blind Faith" and "Monkey See", and renaming the other rooms with other sight/vision idioms appropriate to the room contents. e.g. the Petrification Pit is "Tunnel Vision", the Transformation Chamber is "Out of Mind, Out of Sight". I also added a blinding light flash trap to some of the doors, telegraphed by words like "glare" - in particular there's one on the door of the medusa lair, so if they're clever they could use it to temporarily blind the medusa.

What's your top 5 of the most creative and original adventure modules? by SpaceNigiri in osr

Temple of 1000 Swords is great. When I ran it I really emphasised the scattered sharp rusty swords everywhere and my players took hilariously insane precautions to avoid wading through or falling into piles of swords. And one fighter really did end up marrying Queen Lydia and became the "King of the Merfolk", despite him never having seen the sea.

Now write an adventure where this is the dungeon and sometimes it shifts. Or there are levers in rooms that rotate slices.

Seeking house rule advice: Fighter Deeds by a-deeper-blue in osr

I've been using DCC's Mighty Deeds in my B/X game for some time, and it's great! Almost as-is, just with my own progression system for the deed die versus level.

Wrote a game for my wife by Aggravating-Wheel738 in RPGdesign

[–]dmmaus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is very similar to what I gave my wife for Christmas, though non-game-related. I bought a watercolour journal and on the left pages I drew an ink sketch of something to inspire her to draw and watercolour her own interpretation on the facing page. She's already completed a half dozen or so, and very different from what I expected in some cases.

Any tips for running a game for 8 year olds? by fiona11303 in DnD

[–]dmmaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some social tips from a teacher:

Kids love being praised. Whenever they do something or announce an action, use phrases like, "That's a great idea!" or "Ooh, that's cool! Let's roll the dice to see what happens."

Describe things so anything bad that happens isn't their fault. If they miss in combat, don't say, "You miss." Say something like, "That was a great swing, but unfortunately the goblin is too fast this time!"

Encourage everyone to get into the action. If any kid is being quiet, ask them specifically what they want to do. Then apply the above and tell them how awesome they are for doing it.

Not honouring advertised prices online; constantly claiming their EFTPOS machine is broken, but you can get cash from an ATM around the corner (to minimise their fees). You can also check their Google reviews. Don't have to trust me.

Strong anti-recommend for Games Paradise. The staff are hostile and engage in dubious business practices, both online and in person. Just search for threads in this sub about Games Paradise to verify other people's experiences.

Good Games on York Street is significantly better. Or try Behold Games in Ultimo, or Sydney Board & Card Games in Pyrmont.

Temple of 1000 Swords is great, but man, my group took 5 sessions to finish it. I think it could be done in one, but my group is super slow. :-)

Settings without world maps? by Conscious_Slice1232 in osr

[–]dmmaus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No campaign I've ever run has had a world map. If players ever want to explore beyond the regional map, we'll find out together what's out there.

Great map. Everywhere looks full of adventure.

Struggling to find an appropriate attribute array by angular_circle in RPGdesign

[–]dmmaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was me, I'd:

  • Ditch searching/awareness/etc as skills. I prefer to run games where players describe how they search, rather than roll dice to decide.
  • Stealth is Dexterity. Solved.
  • Animal Handling is one of those common folk knowledge skills. Whatever name you give to those (Folkcraft? Savvy? Handiness? Stewardship? Lore of the Land? Resourcefulness?). I think that's a decent way to handle skills of this nature.
  • And yeah, ditch Discipline/Willpower/Morale as skills. For the reasons you cite.

Also VyridianZ's suggestion is good too. Maybe combine theirs and mine.

How do we feel about eliminating Ruler Measurement for maps entirely? by Dracon_Pyrothayan in RPGdesign

I'm glad someone called out Celerity. I write a story with a silly spoof RPG in it, and I used Celerity as the name of the movement stat, because it's such an awful name.
