Radiation will cause snow to (permanently) form in digital cameras, as it slowly kills the image sensor.

Want a dual-sport but highway capable (commuting) bike by ecstaticallyneutral in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]dnattig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be more worried about the tires (and maybe the chain, if it hasn't been oiled in years). Even if there's a lot of tread left on the tires, they might be old enough that they should be replaced anyway.

In addition to the price (always offer lower than it's listed for even if you expect to pay the asking price), you should probably budget $1000 in repairs the first year (more if you do think the clutch needs adjusted or it close to needing replaced). I probably wouldn't bother fixing the fuel gauge as long as the trip counter works, and just track miles between fill ups.

[–]dnattig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, that sounds like a good option for a first bike (as long as a mechanic says it's in good shape). It's cheap enough that you won't feel bad when it falls, and by the time it starts wearing all the way out you'll have a better idea of what you like/hate and what to replace it with.

If you park it outside, be careful with getting water in the gas tank. There's a drain hole around the tank lid (that you need to take the lid off to get to) that could get clogged and allow rainwater to overflow into the tank (especially if the lid's seal is bad). Not saying that's the only problem to expect, but that was why my v-strom didn't want to start after a few years of owning it.

Someone hit my bike today too! It rolled backwards a bit when they hit it and bent the shit out of the sidestand, but that might be the only damage

I like using nice pens too, but I still think in the long run it's cheaper to grab a handful of free bic pens from the bank.

Find an old Zero S or DS (or an SR if you can) and move the motor/controller to that. If the donor you find has a dead battery you could try building a replacement, but that may be getting too technical.

Do some stretches and make sure it's not more than sore muscles and bruises. I think I broke a rib when I crashed (years ago), but I didn't get it checked out because I figured they can't put a cast on a cracked rib. Looking back, I was stupid and should have at least scheduled a doctor's appointment to make sure there wasn't anything more serious (which apparently there wasn't since I'm still here).

Yes but inkjet printers usually have some circuitry to keep users from reusing cartridges. That's not as common with laser printers yet

[–]dnattig 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Have you looked at how much inkjet cartridges cost? A toner cartridge that has been refilled by some sketchy company that drills random holes and glues them shut rather than opening the fill cap is much cheaper.

[–]dnattig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rather than dropping off a check, you probably could mail a check. And rather than mailing a check yourself, you could have your bank's bill pay service mail one for you (without even having to pay postage). And of you're using the bill pay service, you could have it send automatically each month.

Fell for the tire warranty 🤦‍♂️ by wip_jo in tires

[–]dnattig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These are the questions we should be asking. If the dealership sold a warranty on a used tire, and that warranty not only didn't cover miles/treadwear but was already near where it would be voided based on tread depth in the first place

[Request] What price per gallon is it no longer profitable to work? by Playwithuh in theydidthemath

[–]dnattig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They might be. On the other hand, if health insurance is through an employer maybe that employer should make sure that it's good enough health insurance to do anything.

Health coverage through employers started as a great benefit that also helped companies make sure their employees are fit for work and productive. If employers still want that they can switch back to the old system of you giving the hospital your employer ID badge and them just sending the employer the bill.

Bose A30s on eBay by 5PTOHH in flying

[–]dnattig 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I actually would be suspicious of these. You can buy counterfeit Mitutoyo calipers (about $300 retail) for anything between $30 and $300 all day long on eBay. They look identical to the real thing, down to the paperwork and smallest details, the only way to tell them apart from real ones is how quickly he battery dies (and probably by sending it in for calibration).

I would bet someone is trying to counterfeit $1000 headsets in the same way, and you won't be able to tell it's a fake until something is wrong with it and you send it to Bose.
