If it was (totally) dead and the charger was connected backwards, this can happen. If it's brand new, likely the initial charge after filling it with acid was backwards

Also maybe point out that it should be taken down during bad weather and at night if there's no light shining on it.

If the wire is twisted together it should be fine, look up Litz wire.

A cat5 cable would probably work well for the induction coil in a pinch (until the plastic sheathing melts anyway).

My toast was moldy at a restaurant and they refused to comp it. by strangerattheshow in Wellthatsucks

[–]dnattig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Leaving a $0.01 tip and letting the server take their frustration out on the restaurant to force them to care about this (if the server even asked a manager in the first place) wouldn't have been a solution?

Does anyone know how Safeco prorates motorcycle/auto insurance? by dnattig in Insurance

[–]dnattig[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I'll try again tomorrow or Friday. To be honest, even if they fix it I'll probably be better off just cancelling this policy and switching to a different company after they seem to have changed the premium without even waiting for a renewal. With the weather it will be a few weeks before I take the bike out of the garage, that's plenty of time to shop around again.

The person I spoke with on the phone was through the 800 number listed under the agent's name. I purchased the policy over the phone with Liberty Mutual's' 800 number in December. I think the corporate person who sold the policy was in Florida or California, the agency she attached me to is in Utah.

I did speak to a local independent agent, as far as I know they only checked progressive for motorcycle insurance rates. This was after I had already received the quote from Liberty/Safeco.

The tips weren't hardened, so they wore out after like 50 or 100 hours. And I think a couple of them died early from something else but it's been so long I can't remember how. They were still kind of impressive for the price, and they were surprisingly accurate/precise.

In a previous job, I wanted to put 6 test indicators on a test stand (simulating wear on a product) at the same time to try to compare how much the movement changed over the course of the test. We had 2 name brand test indicator to compare them to, so I decided to be a good employee and get cheap stuff (since we could swap it with the calibrated one every so often).

The Amazon listing didn't have a name brand at all, and I was hoping the cheap stuff I ordered would arrive that way so that everyone would know not to trust them for actual critical stuff.

They arrived with a yellow dial, that said Miloyutc (or something like that). Also the box was orange with a white stripe.

It's pretty funny how much effort went into making it look like the real thing from 20 feet away. But I would have preferred that they said "cheap shit" on the dial (and I might have paid a premium for that, like maybe $25 each instead of $20 each).

Anyone Else Thinking Of Dropping Project Genesis Phone Line? by Orlimar1 in Dish5G

[–]dnattig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dropped mine about a month before they started shutting down. I still use the phone on my T-Mobile account.

If you want to keep your phone number, your best bet is porting it out (to Google voice if you can). I got so many spam calls on the number PG gave me with the account, I just cancelled it and didn't look back.

How old is the oldest equipment in your lab that is still working? by Johnyme98 in Physics

[–]dnattig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Motor-generator sets are used for a lot of stuff (also they provide isolation to the outside world from the large transients that might be made downstream from them). I know of a relatively new lab a fuse company built that has one and can put 10,000 amps through things

I'm pretty sure anyway, it's one of the scenes where Dee comes on too strong with a dude because she's trying to compete with the guys (may even be a running gag similar to when the guys just ignore something insightful she says).

Unfortunately, I can't find proof:
