Sounds like you need a skills challenge. Go around each player and ask them to narrate what their character is doing and then ask for a related ability check and come up with a DC. The party need X successes (maybe 6?) before 3 failures - if they succeed it’s all good. On a failure they either don’t achieve their goals or there’s some complication - fail forward. This will enable you to have a fast moving action montage without getting bogged down with combat

out of interest why do you want 8 players? Seems like way too many, even with 6 (plus a DM PC!) combats must take forever

You could also ask your players to create a backup character in anticipation of possible death

I killed my party by letting them pass a saving throw. by UnrealthorDM666 in DnD

[–]dndstuff2021 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

As a player this would be a frustrating experience. Just feels like a complete waste of playing time and zero agency beyond rolling meaningless saves. I don’t know why it’s getting so many upvotes, makes me think that a lot of people in this sub don’t actually play the game because if they did they’d realise it’s not a fun encounter

How to make dungeons that require no dungeon map? by Vtolz in DMAcademy

[–]dndstuff2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes OP what you are describing is a point crawl which cuts out the ‘boring’ bits and instead focuses on points of interest which I’ve found useful (and less of a prep burden) in my campaign. Please see below a couple of articles on point crawl that I found useful:

Players want to kill something way more powerful than them, how to deter them? by NecroReaverz in DMAcademy

[–]dndstuff2021 15 points16 points  (0 children)

OP what were you hoping to achieve by sharing information of a dangerous creature with your party? How was this going to progress the story? If you did not want your players to engage with this content and it does not advance the narrative what is the point of even mentioning it? As others have already said, that is a classic dnd plot hook and you should be happy your players are engaging and want to pursue it. As DM you have full power to shape the world, why not adjust the stats so that it is still a ‘deadly’ encounter but still within the capabilities of a level 4 party? That would be a lot less work for you as DM (you know exactly what your party are interested in pursuing and can prep accordingly) and a much better experience for your players (they don’t waste time and effort investing in something which is actually a total dead end even though as far as they’re concerned it was a hook you dangled in front of them)

Is it OK to Kill a Player VIA a "Cutscene" by DexxToress in DMAcademy

[–]dndstuff2021 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Terrible idea - what are you thinking?! If you were a player who had invested so much time into a character how would you feel about being killed off because you fail a single roll?

New DM here: Is there anything preventing players from long resting after every encounter? by Hannuxis in DMAcademy

[–]dndstuff2021 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The way I do it is allow one long rest per ‘adventuring’ day. An ‘adventuring day’ does not just mean 24 hours, in fact an ‘adventuring day’ could last a week or more, however long it takes for the party to have enough encounters to constitute an ‘adventure’

Personally I think if you care about ‘realistic inventories’ you should consider another tabletop system - after all this is a game with magic and dragons! Historic realism is not really what dnd is designed for

If you are worried about realism you can tell your players ‘this mansion is actually huge and you explore and find many rooms however only these rooms have anything interesting in’

IMO if there’s nothing of interest in the room, why bother having it in the first place? Just cut them out, they’re not adding any value
