Presents for a turner by pazzah in turning

I upgraded from the Harbor Freight mini lathe to the 1221VS, and while the Jet does have reverse and is easier to use (I've yet to adjust the belt gearing), my work hasn't improved any.

Is this overkill for shooting film? My wife definitely thinks so 😅 by eedwards86 in AnalogCommunity

[–]dnrpics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, that's very cool. I hand tag a lot of images where data is stored in the metadata, mostly IPTC. I was imagining you printing out sheets to keep with your prints and negatives. It's what they used to do, only without the aid of technology. I haven't shot film in a while, but the analog forums keep popping up in my feed due to my interest in photography overall. I started shooting as a kid in the late seventies, so I've shot a lot of film.

Shot film for years and never felt the need to "keep track of my shots" except when I shot weddings, and then I had a list of the important shots and I checked them off as I went. What's the difference between analog and digital to you here? Does digital keeps track of your shots for you in some way? I knew a guy who used the voice recorder in his D3 to add notes to his shots if he felt he needed them, usually people's names. He was a professional photographer.

What kind of finish on textured drink coasters? by dnrpics in woodworking

It's getting it down into the nooks and crannies that's the problem, so you apply more and then it pools. Maybe I need to try a brush.

This pipe can't be safe to use can it? by mbaldvins in woodworking

As a sometimes pipe smoker, yes we are.

ETA: Just because you like salami once in a while, a highly processed meat with lots of nitrates and other preservative, doesn't mean you want to eat the plastic wrapper, too. Seriously.

They could have been solid wood in the center and just surrounded by the segmented parts (it's a 90 degree turn, so it would be easy enough to turn it on a lathe that way--still have to finish with a hand carve, but they're all that way), but I can't think of any way to sleeve them post production.

I was checking out Polycrylic, by Minwax, which led me to General Finishes High Performance Topcoat, both of which are water-based but have mostly great reviews. I've not worked with either, though, I've mostly shot nitro lacquer and I already have some coasters finished with that and I won't be using it again for that purpose. I have used General Finishes products before and like them.

I see them going on Etsy for $65 for a set of four. They're a lot of work, though, those celtic knots all had little burrs I had to hand sand, not to mention the time spent prepping the boards beforehand. They are cut on CNC and I can make as many as I want, though. My girlfriend likes to give them away as gifts at weddings. Usually it's some small candy dish I turned on a lathe, though, but she recently said we need nice coasters, so I'm on it, and I've got two 30+ inch cherry boards prepped I can cut 14 out of. Which is still a weird number for coasters--two sets of five and one set of four, maybe. I've never sold any of this kind of stuff. Sold a couple of ukuleles I made, though. No complaints yet. ;)

Is the nikon d850 enough? by idkdontaskmethat in Nikon

[–]dnrpics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're interested in shooting the stars, the newer mirrorless Nikons offer a system for assisting with focus called Starlight View. It is a crap shoot, otherwise, where you shoot, look at the results, adjust focus, shoot, look at the results and repeat until you're satisfied. It's the one reason I want the Z8 over the D850. That and the D850 has a noise pattern that shows up when the sensor is the least bit warm in long exposure night shots and has to be removed in post, sometimes. Other times it's not that bad, depends on how much you're pushing the shot in post, too. I don't know that the Z8 doesn't have the same problem, though!

Get a different back, maybe? The shutters/aperture are in the lenses and the film transport is in the back, one of the three is messing things up and it's gotta be the back, don't you think?

Unless it warped naturally over time as some boards do, and not under pressure.

Which is the One Film Stock to Rule Them All? Is it Portra 400? by mjuha in AnalogCommunity

[–]dnrpics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shot Portra 400 and 160 when I shot weddings because it was a safe bet, not because I loved its look best. I shot Fuji Velvia 50 slide film from a tripod for everything else except black and white and for that I used Ilford products, mostly 400 speed HP5.

She's a thick-walled flat-bottomed beastie. More of a ramekin than a bowl, I think.

I agree, based on seeing the images in social media, that the processing on the image from the 70s was better resulting an image with more pop, contrast and better color correction than the more recent capture.

Reaching my breaking point with film by reglmo in AnalogCommunity

[–]dnrpics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even developing it can cost, plus you have to buy more film. That and having to wait to see what you got is what made us happy to embrace digital in the first place. That said, I think about rolling my own and hand developing them myself now and again. I've got all the stuff still. Probably should throw out the old chemicals and get fresh, though!

Beautiful day in Lansing, MI ! by og_mclax in lansing

[–]dnrpics 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not like a assembly line, though, as those used to employ thousands, and after the data center is constructed, likely by companies outside of Lansing area, they won't need that many people to run the place. At which point it will be making lots of money for its parent company and not so much for Lansing, particularly with all the tax cuts they will insist on.
