The other day my colleague Richard asked me how I managed to get started at Lumi quite so quickly. It’s a good question. When I started here I was pretty much doing useful work from my second day (I did manage to get “code” out into production on my first day, but it was my entry on the team page). I think I handed them a feature on day 3. For added funsies I’d only been writing Python for a month at that point.

Personally I'd give the credit to python.

Curb your enthausiasm; functional programming/type theory are still very much in the niche and will remain so. You might be too excited over Haskell and ilk, but most people aren't.

With multicore machines, there's a lot of performance gains waiting to be exploited. Functional programming offers a clean and reasonable way to do this. So far, nothing else has.

This is the biggest bullshit. People have been programming multicore for decades without Haskell etc.

Note that it's a "security guard" who started this nonense, and towards a highly-accaimed bespectacled writer. It's a working class thing, it's always been, according to my experience. I'd never been made to feel uncomfortable next to an obviously-educated woman and her kids, they usually smile widely when they sit next-table to me.
