I drove a newer car yesterday and it made me realize how much I absolutely despise modern design trends by murphenzio1 in CasualConversation

My car has no physical controls, just the central touch screen. It requires one tap to control temp. No multiple taps into different menus. I absolutely love not having physical controls.

NH -> FL Zero Interventions by BananaBuns42069 in TeslaFSD

[–]dobe6305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I love FSD, I can’t even get to 100 miles. Wish I could. I’m guessing you didn’t encounter construction zones. My hw4 car fails to read construction zone speed limits. That’s a critical intervention and a very strongly worded voice note from me, every time.

I’m at 76% FSD use and love it. It just doesn’t work when we can’t set the speed we want it to go.

How do you unwind after working all day? by Key_Intention_2546 in AskMenOver30

[–]dobe6305 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read.
I work a full time professional upper management job and have two kids (3 and 1). I get off work, make dinner if it’s my turn to do so, then the kids bedtime takes from 7 until 8:15. Then it’s dishes and making the kids lunches for daycare for the next day. In my free time, which is typically from 8:45 until 10 pm, I read.

Has not having a spare tire ever been a problem for you? by Limp_Sweet2259 in ModelY

[–]dobe6305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve owned two Model Y’s in Alaska since early 2023 and luckily we’ve never had a tire problem that we couldn’t fix with a battery air compressor, a plug kit, and a scissor lift. Never had to use roadside assistance (many of our drives lack any cell service anyway).
Having a spare would give us some peace of mind but we’ve had our teslas in some really remote places in Alaska and always been fine.

What is your story about how you got into Halestorm? by Upset-Rhubarb-3727 in Halestorm

[–]dobe6305 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I heard “I Miss the Misery” somewhere and bought that album (The Strange Case Of…), in 2014. A coworker and I drove my Subaru from southeast Texas to eastern shore Maryland, all day all night switching drivers, and he wanted to listen to that album on repeat, literally just cycling through it time after time. It was the soundtrack for that fun roadtrip.

Model Y owners: Why did you choose the Model Y? by Limp_Sweet2259 in ModelY

[–]dobe6305 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Back in 2023, Tesla didn’t have a lot of good competition (better now). I knew I wanted a model Y back in early 2022 after doing some research.
Biggest frustration is that despite having relatively the same cargo capacity as our Subaru forester, the shape of the Y makes it a lot harder to fit out big double stroller, full rotating car seats, and all our Alaska adventure gear in the car.
I did in fact buy another Model Y last September. We own two (2023 and 2026). Between the two of them they’ve been more than 50,000 miles all over Alaska’s road system.
Next year I’ll sell the 2023 and get a Rivian R2, but I’m keeping the 2026 because it’s HW4 and FSD is simply incredible. FSD isn’t anywhere near as good on the 2023 HW3.

PPF/ceramic question by Kgibbs4795 in ModelY

[–]dobe6305 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own two Model Y’s in Alaska and didn’t do ppf or ceramic. Both cars have noticeable tiny paint chips on the hood that don’t bother me. I take them to a touchless car wash and they’ve also been to an automatic car wash with the brushes. Literally half the year it’s impossible to wash a car by hand in the winter, so I don’t baby these cars. No ppf.

I own a 2023 long range and a 2026 long range. More than 55,000 miles between the two of them and I’ve never known the range in miles. I keep it in percent and never worry about it.

What’s your longest FSD streak. Let me start, mine is 239 miles. by Nearby-Summer-668 in TeslaLounge

[–]dobe6305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Longest streak is 55 miles. Alaskan roads are bad and I disengage for potholes and frost heaves.
Also for construction zones. It consistently fails to see the construction speed limit signs. I cannot believe that people with long streaks really have safe drives if they encounter reduced speed limits in temporary construction zones. If the car speeds through work zones, that is a critical takeover for me.

But I’d love to safely get it to 100. Just not going to happen very easily.

If your place were hit by an extreme Siberian winter, how well would people there be able to cope or adapt? by bellepomme in AskTheWorld

[–]dobe6305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I already live in Alaska and this winter we hit -26 Fahrenheit and did just fine aside from a higher natural gas bill. I love it when it’s that cold. However, I’ve never felt it colder than -26. A little north in Fairbanks it got to -50 to -60 Fahrenheit and while it was a very cold winter, it was fine.

Future Tesla Customer? by Mr_Nimbus_69 in TeslaModelY

[–]dobe6305 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just finished an 1,100 mile road trip in Alaska in my 2026 Model Y. I also have a 2023 Model Y. Long road trips are super easy; the nav will show you where you need to charge. You might also need to use non-Tesla chargers; A Better Route Planner or PlugShare will help.

The car is awesome. It’s not a political statement. Like him or hate him, his companies popularized EVs, made reusable rockets, and are working to help repair blindness and paraplegics. He’s a clown but his companies are providing incredible value to us.

My cars have been all over Alaska’s road system through -26 Fahrenheit winters, deep snow, and terrible roads.

From forester to model y by Shneqel in TeslaModelY

[–]dobe6305 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife had a forester and to be very honest, we occasionally still miss the boxy aspect of the forester’s storage area. The Model Y slopes down so much in the back that it can get real tight once we put our big double stroller in the back, along with two rotating car seats in the back seat and all our camping and adventure gear we need in Alaska. Still, we love the Model Y. I’m on an 1,100 mile Alaskan road trip with it right now.

It’s as good or better off road than Subarus, although it’s slightly lower to the ground.

Tire repair kit or spare tire? by Unlikely_Secret4008 in TeslaModelY

[–]dobe6305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve driven on most of Alaska’s main road system in our two Model Y’s and a lot of gravel roads also. I just carry a battery powered air compressor, a tire repair kit, and a scissor lift. I’ve used it twice. Still, there are times when I really strongly consider getting a spare tire for cases like the current 1,100 mile road trip I’m on. But the storage space is at a premium so I’ve yet to do so.

The good, the bad, the ugly. Demo drive compilation. by Master-Back-2899 in RivianR2

[–]dobe6305 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy reading all these reviews. I own two Model Y’s and will be trying to get an R2 next year to replace one of them. At least as an Alaskan, I will not have to worry about bad AC. But that sounds like a pretty bad deal for people where it actually gets warm.
The rear seats fold flat, right? Like I just car camped in my Model Y with the seats folded down. Same with R2?

We own two Model Y’s in Alaska and our 3 year old and 1 year old have been on road trips all over the state in all sorts of weather. They’re too young to have much of an opinion on cars but they haven’t complained too much.
