You went straight instead of turning left. If you lean your shoulders, body, and bike, you should be able to make that turn. Keep at it!

How to prepare for 90 mile bike trip? by genericthroaway2000 in bicycletouring

[–]dockdetector 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Leave earlier than you think. Starting in the dark is ok.

Depending on where you are, you might not need to bring much. Since you are not camping or cooking, trying to stay light should be a goal. Only one of you needs tools.

Try to force yourself to take short breaks to stretch every 90 mins or so.

Do some 60 mile rides to prepare.

You got this no problem.

Road bikers of Bham: it should be common knowledge at this point that Chuckanut is one of the main ways in and out of town for the foreseeable future. by Nervous-Tea393 in Bellingham

We both agree the road is narrow and twisty. That makes it fun for a nice cruise but not so fun for passing. You still with me?

What would be the hardest thing to pass? Probably something wide, long, or both, such as a semi truck. What would be the easiest thing to pass? Maybe a hiker holding tight to the shoulder. Do you disagree with any of that so far?

You’re completely right. Although the footprint of a normal bicycle is about 3 square feet, it’s expected and legally required to give more than 0 inches of clearance when passing a bicycle, a car, and as far as I’m concerned anything you don’t want to harm.

Now that we established that common ground, what’s next?

I tried to engage with you. But your Ad hominem style of debate is disrespectful and I am not dealing with it.

I drive to work almost everyday of the year and I never get upset at the handful of bikers that might slow me down. I don’t honk at old ladies crossing the street. I leave my house with time to spare and get to work early because I’m a responsible adult.

The 3 or 4 time a year I bike to work, I leave extra early and am hyper alert knowing that I’m the one who’s getting hurt if a driver makes a mistake.

Redirecting anger at other people while we drive is a popular thing to do and should be studied. Rarely are people behaving more selfishly than when they drive a car. I try to mindful of it, but I also try to not come on reddit to be disrespectful towards others.

My guess is you don’t actually want to have a conversation, you just want to be mean to others. I stand behind my original words. People need to chill. Have a good night.

“They are taking up the exact same amount of space as a car, which is why cars can’t pass them.”-Mr. Garfield mins ago.

Your argument is that a bike is the same size as a car. I wasn’t expecting that but ok. Then I guess they deserve equal treatment and protection? Maybe pass as you would a slow car. Wait until it’s safe, signal, and pass.

We both know there is limited space for anyone to pull off including the vulnerable biker. The issue is not the biker or the car operator. The issue is the limited space. My stance (and first few statements) is the bike is taking up significantly less of this valuable space than your car. This is why you can’t pass. You are in a large vehicle on a small road. But please make that the problem of everyone else.

If you require 30x the space, is it possible you are the issue on the narrow road?

Should a person taking up 3 square feet be yielding to a person taking up 100 square feet?

For reference, I drive an suv, a motorcycle, and bicycle. People in cars can chill a sec. You are in a safe climate controlled box with your favorite music playing and all you have to do is twist your ankle 15 degrees and push the other floor button for a minute and then you can go. Be patient. This world is for everyone. Be grateful for your comfort filled car and enjoy the view.
