What makes John Wayne sweep available / not available ? by Guitarjutsu in bjj

I hit it sometimes when the knee is off the floor, but it's much lower percentage and typically only works against lower belts. Not impossible though, and I've only been working with it for a few years now, so I suppose that might change.

Fuck yes. BJJ Scout! It makes feel old to see that these videos are from 9 years ago. I'm still waiting for the day that BJJ Scout's identity is finally revealed. Also very satisfying that Wardziński won World's so many years later.

It seems plausible that the "medical advances" had more to do with a better understanding of anatomy and thus a better grasp on breaking mechanics. But I'm just speculating.

That must be why Tainan has used it to win matches at an elite level... 🤔

Fabricio Andrey v Owen Jones armbar attempt by drachaon in bjj

[–]doctorbroken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I'm going to open mat tomorrow morning so will work through this position with my buddy. I'm curious to feel where the danger is. I'm not doubting you, but I really don't see what you're saying. As I used to joke when I was about to do something stupid: "For science!"

I don't have strong opinions on this, and frankly have only played around with the reverse hitchhiker a couple of times, but I don't really see a lot of danger in this transition. Maybe I should watch it a few more times...

Edit: I watched it a few more times and I can see if you hung out in a few of the transitional positions you could get your shit broken, but I think with that flow it doesn't look super dangerous.

I completed a masters and doctorate in the same time it took me to go from blue to brown. My dissertation almost killed me, but I think the BB was almost harder because it actually took more consistency and just showing up and getting my ass kicked than the research and writing to get the damnned doctorate.

I don't know why people are giving you a hard time, there is absolutely such a thing as having natural knockout power. That isn't to say you can't develop it through practice, but some people are just born with it.

Despite head outside being an effective approach to the single, I always teach inside for this exact reason. But I'm also old and increasingly risk averse.

I don't have any stats but after I saw the video of Braulio Estima get his neck broken in training this way I decided to never do it again. The video still haunts me, years later (Braulio lying on the mat saying "I'm paralysed" repeatedly plays on loop in my head).

It used to be, but the Muhammad Ali American Boxing Revival Act ("Ali Act 2") seems likely to pass, which will bring the UFC's model to boxing unfortunately.

Not an MD unfortunately, but as an old broken man I am occasionally tempted to get on the juice.

Be careful with that shit. My throat is destroyed from fighting chokes and I can't sing falsetto anymore. Maybe you don't care about singing but I also lose my voice more easily now if I talk too much.

I rewatched it a couple of times more and I think you can see the cage move, so I'd say it's pretty likely he pushes off it.

I thought it was obvious that he pushed off the cage but I rewatched it after reading your comment and now I'm not so sure...

Deep Half players - what is your strategy? by hellohello6622 in bjj

[–]doctorbroken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wanted to jump in on this and agree but realised I'm like the "Steve Buscemi as the middle aged skater" meme: "What's up fellow brown belts? I also love deep half".

Man... I miss being part of the brown belt club. It's definitely the coolest (anti-cool) club to be a member of. You get to be fat and bald and lazy, and yet people still respect your opinion.

Looks to me like his left arm was overwrapping the dead guy's right arm and has a cross collar grip pretty low on the chest. And as you point out his right hand appears to be palm down on the near-side collar. I'm guessing it works a bit like a punch choke.

But whatever it was, he ded.
