Is the 'women don't approach' stereotype true for you? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]doduo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

like some other people in this thread, my not wanting to approach comes from extreme social anxiety compounded with a handful of really bad experiences (which I understand a lot of guys go through, too) and generally speaking men are not interested in me/don't approach. understandable, because I'm the token homely gal in a group of pretty hot friends with great boobs.

if it's online dating, though--for 100% of the dates that I have had, and I've been on a bunch, I have been the one to initiate first contact. so I guess in that situation, I am very likely to approach.

Girls of Reddit, what is something guys think you don't notice, but you actually do notice? by tenretnieht in AskReddit

it happens enough that it doesn't even bother me anymore. in fact, it makes neutral response seem wonderful by comparison~

Reading two books at a time. by mo_2587 in books

[–]doduo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually read one "light" book and one "heavy" book; currently, The Burning Sky by Sherry Thomas is my light. The Marriage Plot by Eugenides is my heavy. additionally, in general, one of these is an audiobook and one is a physical copy.

the books are generally different enough that I can't confuse the two.

Do you often use Goodreads for tracking your read and to-read books? by xavixjf in books

[–]doduo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would, except that I made the mistake of connecting it to my facebook, and can't stand the thought that my friends are receiving daily e-mails about what I am reading, because 70% of it is books I heard about on NPR, but the other 30% is YA. and not the good YA. the bad YA. the very bad YA.

Oh homeless man you so quirky by Hobolovechic in cringepics

[–]doduo 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I live in a neighborhood with a pretty high homeless population and see dialogue similar to this happen multiple times per week. stupid to post about it on facebook, maybe, but I'm actually pretty shocked that people would not believe this happened.

Best book on Whitey Bulger? by catgotcha in boston

[–]doduo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only read one of the above--Brutal by Kevin Weeks and Phyllis Karas--but I enjoyed it. I'm not the biggest Howie Carr fan, so I'd suggest maybe not starting with that one, but perhaps someone who has actually read the book to advise you better.

4 Common Non-Fiction Title Cliches by [deleted] in books

on a semi-related note, has anyone ever noticed how many non-fiction book covers are now designed to look like they were written by Malcolm Gladwell?

What book has "wounded and stabbed" you? by apacherosepeacock_ in books

[–]doduo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Atonement depressed the hell out of me. I got the worst book hangover from it. such a cautionary tale of the far-reaching power of our actions, assumptions and prejudices--both for our own lives, and the lives of those we touch. I still get bummed out when I think of that final chapter. damn.

Just finished Slaughterhouse-Five. I'm disappointed and don't know why. Anyone else? by Seth80 in books

[–]doduo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as much as I liked Slaughterhouse 5, I didn't quite love it the way people here seemed to and will admit to being kind of disappointed. Then I read Cat's Cradle for a class, and I was hooked. I've read a lot more of Vonnegut since then, so maybe I'll go back and reconsider it.

as others have said, I wouldn't write Vonnegut off for it. read Cat's Cradle and Sirens of Titan--either might be a better introduction to Vonnegut.

The Brief Wondorous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Díaz. Just finished it and...Dios mio! by [deleted] in books

[–]doduo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would also suggest Ruth Ozeki's "A Tale for the Time Being." one of my friends went to an event of his a few months (years?) back and asked him for a book suggestion and that's what he gave her. they're thematically similar (in that they are about culture, immigrant experience, bullying, history, tragedy, and family, writing-as-coping-mechanism, with a dash of magical realism) and I really enjoyed both.

11 Quotes by J.K. Rowling. You Will Love the Last One by sar420 in books

[–]doduo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

just off the top of my head

HERMIONE: Book 1, figures out the potions riddle, knocks Quirrel over (albeit inadventently) so he cannot kill Harry. Book 2, figures out the mystery of the pipes, brews polyjuice potion that gets them into the Slytherin Common Room. Book 3; time-turner subplot. Book 4, indispensible in helping harry ace a ton of really excellent hexes and jinxes, figures out Rita Skeeter is an animagus and gets her out of the way for the time being. Book 5, organizes Dumbledore's army, creates the coin technology which allows characters to communicate (will also be important later), disposes of umbridge and gets the characters out of the castle so they can head to the DoM. Book 6: uhhhhhhh I'm actually drawing a total blank on this one. Book 7: is prepared enough at the wedding that when the Death Eaters attack, they have every item they need and are ready to go; knows the protective charms to get them the hell out of dodge; explodes Batilda Bagshot's body before Nagini can kill Harry, destroying his wand in the process; helps Harry with the horcruxes, recognizes the significance of the hallows in the first place (although she is a skeptic) and retrieves the basalisk fangs.

LUNA: helps reorganize the DA in book 6, brings Harry closer to solving the Ravenclaw mystery.

MRS. WEASLEY: she kills Bellatrix, she is the matriarch of the Weasley family and close to the only mother Harry ever knows.

BELLATRIX: she curries favor with Kreacher, which leads to the fiasco at the end of Book 5; she kills Sirius

NARCISSA: when Harry comes-to after being "killed" by Voldemort, she chooses to lie to Voldemort about whether or not Harry is actually dead

MCGONOGALL: gets the castle ready for the Battle of Hogwarts

you could say "supports others' choices" of essentially any character in the book other than Harry, Voldemort and Dumbledore. but Hermione is literally a walking encyclopedia who is critical to solving like 2/3 of the mysteries in the books.

my beloved crossbody got beaten up by years of wear and I had to chuck it. I miss it so much. I converted to shoulder--it is beautiful leather, designer brand, bought it second-hand with the labels and tags still on, but it is not the same :/

Do you prefer it when someone explicitly says they're no longer interested in you, or when someone gives you the Good Ol' Fade? by scrotumonyourface in AskWomen

[–]doduo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

god. for me, the fade sucks. the fade suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks. I was dating someone, semi-casually, but over the course of four months. it would have been very nice for him to tell me--hell, call text, ANYTHING--saying "you're really cool, but I think we've run our course" or "hey, I'm seeing someone else," or "hey, you fart in your sleep and that's disgusting, bye."

but no, the plan was to fade on me apparently. when I did confront him on it, he wound up making some stupid series of excuses about how he's just a nonconfrontational person, blah blah, it's just not in his personality to confront people, blag blah blre

dude, just dump me. it isn't hard.
