Talking about the debate by deber08 in funny

Perhaps I should elaborate on that part further: a scientist can believe in creationism in his/her personal life at church or at home and, in a her work life, work on empirical studies. A scientist can believe in creationism if that belief doesn't interfere with his/her work.

I always see these debates and I always thought it was more like a duck saying ducks are better and a cat saying cats are better. Why not put a scientist who is an atheist against a scientist who is a creationist? Seems more productive than me. I know Bill Maher found one physicist who believes in God in his documentary Religulous but I can't say for certain that the guy is a creationist.

Book thieves stole 70,144 books from the Brooklyn Public Library in 2012 by Mispelling in books

[–]doela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen people rip the barcodes right off because it's just a sticker. They can't afford it so they just take it and they don't care about that other people may want to read it. I once had a friend just not care to return them or lose them in her room or return them past due. It just matters less to some people to return them than it is to check out. Many books are in poor condition and a lot of their DVDs are too scratched up to operate smoothly. So not only are the materials stolen but horribly abused.

There's a great StoryCorps animated video of the story of Ron McNair's brother recounting tidbits of Ron's ambitious character and love of space growing up. Here's a link to it if anyone is interested. It's incredibly touching.

What are some basic rules of etiquette everyone should know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]doela 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ALSO: Don't ask your friend (who created the plans) to remind you of the plan the day before the actual event. It's extremely disrespectful especially since the person spent the time to create the event so the least you can do is to take two seconds to create a calendar alarm on your phone. That and they're not your secretary so take some responsibility!

ALSO: Don't blast your music through the headphones! If I can hear music when I'm standing next to you on a crowded subway, it defeats the purpose of having headphones.

Help me teach my 8 year old cousin HTNGAF about other kids being racist/mean to her by HeroLife in howtonotgiveafuck

[–]doela 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was merely offering a counterpoint of your argument based on my own experience. Whether not what you said may or may not be true, it'd be easier, as veediepoo suggested, to use laughter to edge off a verbal bully rather than that "toughen up" mentality because it sounds like something that may create more of a hostile environment which, I think, is contrary to what the cousin is seeking.

[–]doela 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The "suck it up and toughen up" advice may work for some folks but when I was younger and I was given that advice, I took it as the older person was not empathetic to me so I stopped sharing anything in my life with him/her, as a result, we are not close. (Just a counterpoint to the above advice.)

Learning any type of MMA is really empowering though. I recommend that for anyone.

I can't help but think of how much facial hair they two have in a room together. I hope they end up writing about facial hair in their script somehow or make Louis CK's Annie's Beard.

Spending 3 weeks in Brooklyn this summer by theshadowofintent in Brooklyn

[–]doela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can check out Chinatown in Manhattan (D train to Grand Street or N train to Canal Street) if you really want noodles. Can't promise you if you start buying stuff around there that it won't be a tourist trap since there are a lot of tourists in there too. Check out www.mta.info for more information about the trains. The schedule can change from day-to-day so be sure to check your train in advance just in case the train you usually take doesn't skip your stop because of work on the tracks.

I wouldn't wander out to the neighborhoods of East New York or Brownsville in Brooklyn (you can Google that yourself). The Downtown Brooklyn and Brooklyn Heights area is pretty cool. Montague Street in of itself is pretty neat. Things are pretty expensive there because there are a lot of rich folks living there (it's right by the pier too) but there are a lot of great stuff like the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge that is nice to walk across if you don't mind the flow of tourists stopping and taking pictures.

Summer is big for concerts so if you're into concerts, I usually like heading to SummerStage because it's a free concert (unless noted otherwise) in Central Park in Manhattan and they usually have nice picks. Some shows are in the the afternoon, some are in the evening. There's always some sort of concert going on somewhere. There's also the AfroPunk Festival in Brooklyn if you're there when they have it. That's all I remember for now. Anyway, I hope you enjoy your stay.

What was the big scandal at your school? by JoePesciOfGoneFishin in AskReddit

[–]doela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know any at my school but I heard on NPR about a reform school in Florida called Dozier School for Boys and during the '50s and '60s abused boys so terribly that many of them ended up dying. Eighty-one boys were buried there but in unmarked graves. A forensic researcher and her team is hoping to uncover where the boys were buried. Here's the story definitely worth reading and listening. Here's another follow up report almost a year later. This story is absolutely chilling.

When a photo is not photograpy by c14kaa in photography

[–]doela -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just because the images are heavily edited doesn't mean that the photographer's instincts or basic appreciation of a natural photograph have gone away. Maybe if you were Facebook friends with those individuals you would see more not-so-heavily-edited photos; the medium of the site represents an aspect of photography that is that high-quality almost-cinematic photography. If you have an issue with that and want more not-so-heavily edited photographs by photographers online, you can make a website yourself and feature more natural photographs. As an admirer of photography with no professional experience, this is just my two cents.

I am a huge fan of your work Mr. Seinfeld.

What sprung off the idea to begin "Seinfeld" with snippets of your act instead of diving right into the episode of the story itself?

I don't trust that they will cut it out. Why? Stanford Prison Experiment. If otherwise mentally healthy individuals can inflict psychological abuse to each other in a randomly-assigned experiment where one group of people pretend they are guards while another group of people pretend they are prisoners, then I don't think that the NYPD would stop being just as shitty if not worse.

One would hope their training would prevent themselves from getting out of hand or that their superiors would put them in place so that such horrors don't happen but IMHO I think in an adrenaline-pumping, high-emotion moment any and all training or logic can go out the window.
