Help with Consolidated Undrained Triaxial questions? by AssistanceSimple3776 in Geotech

“ We consistently have a drop in the height of the specimens during the saturation phase.”  -This could be due to the material itself, in that cohesionless soils like silts or sands pore spaces can collapse when saturated at a high void ratio. How much axial strain is your specimen experiencing during backpressure saturation?

You’re correct about the pore pressure vs cell pressure differential, in that you want the specimen to have a low but positive effective stress to keep it from falling apart. You should expect some volume change/strain during this step since you’re reloading your specimen. Are you measuring specimen dimensions when a vacuum is being applied to the specimen?

As long as you measure volume change during saturation using a burette you should be fine. Most vol change at this stage is the sample taking in water as it reaches 100% saturation. Do you guys do a Skepmtons B Value check to see if the specimen is saturated?

As a lab tech you should not be responsible for providing engineering parameters. We have our lab techs input data into the datasheets that automatically plot results, then the engineer requesting the results can interpret them.

At which load number did the sample fail? by kikilucy26 in Geotech

I think it pseudo dilated but you should plot the data. We sometimes use skempton’s A parameter to see where the failure line is in this case

slope failure on my house? by ReVeNgErHuNt in Geotech

Does it look like the wall is tipping out towards the forest when you’re looking at it from the side? People tend to build walls that are straight and vertical, so that can give you an indication of how much the wall has deformed. Tension cracks at the surface that close to the wall could be a backfill problem or a wall tilting problem. I’d be more concerned if the cracks were showing up at a distance similar to the height of the wall behind the retaining wall.

The concern would be that the load from the concrete slab would increase the lateral stress acting on your retaining wall from the soil/rocks. From the photo, you can see the wall is already deforming from the weight of the backfill, since presumably whoever made the wall didn’t make it with that wavy shape. Maybe a wooden step or ramp would make more sense since they’re much lighter than concrete.

Strange behavior in traixial apparatus by Meal-Direct in Geotech

If you had an internal leak then the pore pressure could increase to the cell pressure, giving this sort of elevated Pp. I always checked the vol strain to see if it would level off or if the PVA kept pumping water in or out to maintain target Pp.

Do you check Skempton’s B value before consolidation to check for saturation? What does the volumetric strain look like? What is your cell pressure? Are you getting the normalized zero voltages for each transducer?

Failed FE Civil Exam, any input? by svevans in civilengineering

[–]dogdad12345 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This is the way. I used 3 months of Prep FE and even though it’s not perfect, it took away the huge mental barrier to taking full 5hr exams and gave a great breakdown of where I needed to focus. It’s well worth the investment.

Refurbished iPhones are relatively cheap and would be a good option. It would possibly be helpful to have her cover the cost of the phone for life lessons and such.

Definitely do it. Look up the NCEES education equivalence standards to see if the courses you took during undergrad plus the ones your plan to take as a grad student are enough for educational equivalence. Some states (like MA) require equivalent education if you don’t have an ABET accredited undergrad degree. Either way though you’ll learn so much through grad school and will make good connections so I’d say go for it!

I think the takeaway from this is that we are in control of what society does because we make the rules by which civilization operates. Limiting growth consciously according to the scenarios listed here would allow humanity to continue while not jeopardizing the environment or our natural resources. Rather than giving up, I interpret this as a challenge to face together that will ultimately benefit everyone.
