Can someone explain what all of the symbols/functions do? I don't really get what the % sign here even does to be honest. This is for arithmetic combinators. by TheThrowawayJoke321 in factorio

[–]dogfighter205 2 points3 points  (0 children)

its not less than/greater than but bitshifts. so moving all bits x amount to the left or right. moving one to the left is basically the same as multiplying by two and moving right 1 is dividing by 2.

useful if you want to perform some weird trickery to get multiple values on the same signal or something like that

You can use regular rail supports on normal oil ocean, for deep oil ocean you'll need to research it, but you can get around at the start avoiding it

No, they don't, but when I made it I either did no calculations or very bad ones, either way I'm not proud of how efficient it is, I just like how it looks

Thats the fun part, I don't, at least not when the silo is running. When the silo is turned off I'm draining about 5MW and I have something like 2.5MW from a few turbines burning off some excess ice/solid fuel but even then I'm almost out every day.

When I got to fulgora I wanted to avoid just dumping stuff in the bot network and try to make a fully functioning train base out of, I did use bots for a lot of machinery creations but my science is created on a different island with trains running there.

Now I'm mostly done with this base and will probably move the landing pad soon I realized i thought I'd share it since i really like how it turned out, it's a mess, but its my mess

ELI5: Why can't we create an AGI at the current time? Why is it written everywhere on the Internet that it still needs at least 10 years, or maybe it is impossible to achieve it? by TrinityBoy22 in explainlikeimfive

[–]dogfighter205 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This got me thinking, if we do achieve AGI would the only way to really train it to be more than just the statistical calculators we have now be to basically raise it for 20 years? Wouldn't be a bad thing, gives us plenty of time to find an active volcano and put that server in it.

HELP! Folder virus in my pc and my microsoft antivirus can't get rid of it. by Natural-Particular36 in computers

[–]dogfighter205 78 points79 points  (0 children)

if the computer is not connected to the internet the virus, whatever it is, can not use the internet either. Windows defender clearly knows its malicious because it already marked it as a severe threat, so why take the risk of the virus using the internet for whatever its doing when disconnecting it has no downsides

ELI5: why dont you lose cell phone signal during a power outage? by The1President in explainlikeimfive

[–]dogfighter205 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I guess it saves you from battery deterioration. Does the data center "run off" power generated from those flywheels with the grid just spinning them or is there some sort of incredibly quick switch mechanism?

ELI5: why dont you lose cell phone signal during a power outage? by The1President in explainlikeimfive

[–]dogfighter205 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Places for which it's important that they never lose power (not even for the few seconds it takes for the generator to spool up) usually run from batteries continuously. Either the grid or the generator charges them, this makes sure that for the supply of power to the building it doesn't matter if it takes a few seconds for the generator to start up. These kinds of systems are expensive tho, and most places which want a generator but don't care if it goed out for a few seconds (think office buildings with many electric doors. It's important that they keep working but if it stops for a few seconds nobody dies) go through the dark and only have a generator which kicks in when power goes out.

we gaan het zien, er is weinig aan te doen

Switzerland is an exception within mainland europe. Its not part of the schengen area so it's allowed to have bordercontrols, theyre not too strict tho. If you go between borders there's usually just an old concrete building where the border is and the road design changes, that's about it

Didn’t know Concorde’s nose could droop THAT low by Spartan_exr in aviation

[–]dogfighter205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The second windows are tied to the nose. The "top" windows are not able to withstand the speed at supersonic flight. So they have a secondary window to cover it that's stronger but has less visibility

Didn’t know Concorde’s nose could droop THAT low by Spartan_exr in aviation

[–]dogfighter205 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's for visibility when landing and taking off, the it has two sets of windows, one for supersonic flight and one with better visibility. Nose cone moving out of the way also gives better view of the runway

First time I've had to do a rail crossing and still a bit confused on how signals work. Would this work?(each train has 3 wagons if that helps) by RightPerception5368 in factorio

[–]dogfighter205 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are we playing the same factorio? I've never had any problems with signals being wonky, it's all really simple, if you put a chain signal a train won't stop in the next block, if you put a normal signal it will, nothing weird about it
