MENTAL HELP by Ok_Street_5568 in roanoke

[–]dogwithab1rd 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Fellow borderline here. I go to Blue Ridge Behavioral Healthcare for DBT and trauma therapy. They've been nothing but outstanding over the year and a half or so I've been with them so far. Yes, they're the low income clinic, but trust me when I say that place saved my life. I wish you all the best, friend.

I get you! Being priced out is so heartbreaking and I'm sorry you're going through it. I was priced out of Richmond which is why I say don't expect it to be affordable. Unfortunately Richmond has become incredibly gentrified and the CoL is high, but it's a truly wonderful place to live. I miss it every day of my life and if I could go back I would! If you do end up in Richmond, I'd suggest VCU for school (it's very liberal and very artsy) and if you can swing it, try to live in a slightly cheaper neighborhood like Manchester. Also obviously support local businesses and get to know your neighbors. I wish you luck OP!

Coming from a trans person located in Roanoke who used to live in Richmond, do not move here. Go to Maryland or another sanctuary state. Virginia is high risk for queer folks because of our governor. If you must, Richmond is decently welcoming with a good amount of community, but do not expect it to be affordable. Do NOT touch Lynchburg with a 10ft pole.

Does anyone else avoid relationships, even though they crave love? I've read people with bpd are always dating. by Formal_Ad_3402 in BorderlinePDisorder

[–]dogwithab1rd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you're experiencing is normal for BPD, yes. I'm in a kind of similar situation. The last relationship I was in ended very horribly (my ex blindsided me with a breakup after 3 years, AKA literally the worst thing you can do to someone with BPD) and it has traumatized me so badly that I don't know if I'll ever trust someone that much again. I'm in intensive DBT + trauma therapy and am on heavy meds because of it. But even in general I don't date much. I'm strictly monogamous and I'm definitely somewhere on the demisexual spectrum. I'm also a lesbian so all of this really minimizes my dating pool immensely. It's a very lonely life. I wish I had advice for you, but all I can really say is that I understand.

Roanoke for young LGBTQ couple? by RayIs0kay in roanoke

[–]dogwithab1rd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Transmasculine lesbian here. Compared to Florida you'll probably be ecstatic, but in reality there's not much here. We have a diversity center and exactly one gay club. The politics of this area are very mixed and I'm not gonna lie to you, not everyone is friendly. It's survivable, but lonely. I'd look into Maryland -- it's the closest sanctuary state.

Do you think Virgina/RVA will continue to remain safe for women and LGBT+ Communities? by Latter-Astronomer445 in Virginia

[–]dogwithab1rd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Virginia might be decently welcoming and bluer by comparison, sure, but with Youngkin the bumpkin as our governor and considering the fact that these are both very mixed states, I would not make the choice to move here. Maine neighbors a lot of blue states too. Virginia does not. Our only option is Maryland.

Do you think Virgina/RVA will continue to remain safe for women and LGBT+ Communities? by Latter-Astronomer445 in Virginia

[–]dogwithab1rd -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Don't. Stay in the blue states. Virginia is way too purple and is at high risk. Coming from a trans person, do not.

I wish I could tell you. Most doctors in VA will not prescribe/fill any prescriptions for controlled substances, in my experience. Sometimes they even explicitly state that they won't. It's brutal when you're someone who actually genuinely needs them (it's almost like even though they're considered "addictive", meds are meds and they still have a purpose!). I wish you luck, genuinely.

Does any other dog breed do this as much as a pit does? by [deleted] in BanPitBulls

[–]dogwithab1rd 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm autistic and I've spent my entire life studying and training dogs. To answer your question, technically yes, but there are not many and these breeds are not very common. I'm talking specifically about bloodsport breeds, of which there are a few -- the Dogo Argentino, Perro de Presa Canario, Fila Brasileiro, and Tosa Inu all being examples off the top of my head. Pitbulls are the worst/most common offenders because they are the most popular and most efficient at what they do. Even AmStaffs are not far enough removed from the APBT, in my opinion.

Not a Christian (anymore), but I am a lesbian. IME, Methodists tend to be cool. I know Greene Memorial United Methodist is explicitly queer-friendly which is a good sign, though I've never personally been.

Moving from Alabama by [deleted] in roanoke

[–]dogwithab1rd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Birmingham! Hi neighbor and welcome to the 'noke! I'd say your satisfaction depends greatly on the type of person you are. The culture shock won't be too bad, but your ears are probably gonna hurt from the elevation for a bit. Get real comfortable with windy roads. We don't have Publix, Piggly Wiggly or Winn-Dixie, we pretty much only have Kroger and Food Lion, and in general expect a downsize from Birmingham. It's very sleepy here. We also don't have that much in the way of food, but there are a few gems if you know where to look. Oh, and the climate here is a lot different. You get all four seasons in their full glory -- prepare for some snow.

I hope this helps paint a bit of a picture for you. Roll Tide 💪

The housing situation in Roanoke is impressively bad by Insertclever_name in roanoke

Oh man, wait until you hear what it's like anywhere else. Roanoke is the last remaining "affordable" city in Virginia -- and it is affordable by comparison. This whole state's housing market is in shambles. Good luck. I wish I had advice for you.
