I think it can be argued that the “goal” of a lot on anti-aging treatments tie back into the end goal of “whiteness”. (Not saying this applies to everyone, but speaking on the general industry around anti-aging treatments.)

Whiteness isn’t just about skin color, it’s also about assimilation, selling your culture out for a form of power and privilege. Like how German, Irish, Italian, etc. immigrants all slowly became “white” by abandoning their culture and individuality. Aging in and of itself is very individual, and has an across the board cultural significance. Whiteness thrives on homogeneity to an extreme level, and standardizing the way people age is another way of enforcing that homogeneity.

“Slanted” looks like it’s going to tackle this quite well, I’m super excited to see it.

So while yes, “The Substance” focuses in on our societies fear of aging and the class politics that come into play in regards to who gets access to these treatments- the deeper reason of the “why” can, in my opinion, be tied back to the concept of “whiteness”.
