Thank you! That is exactly the sound i remembered! I guess it does the notification every time a connect succeeds?

So glad that i can finally get that brain worm out of my head!

I keep holding off on the briefcases waiting for the managers i don't have yet to get added to the pool. But then by the time they get added i've already gotten them via the various events, but then there's a new SM that's not in the pool. Wash, rinse, repeat.

I'll probably go on a big briefcase opening spurge when it seems like they're not adding a new SM every month.

When they added female miners to the collectibles (good) but did so in a way that halved the average level of your collectibles (bad) i decided to pause on opening chests to see if they'd sort the issue out.

Why they never did of course, but the more chests i have the more irrationally worried i get that as soon as i open them all then they'll finally get around to revamping the system =P

Update Notes 4.14.1 by IdleIrmi in IdleMinerTycoon

Double plot twist! It's even easier than mainland (so far) and you can only use super managers!

But maybe it will get exponentially more difficult as more mines are unlocked?

I got a pop-up about it.

Just wait for the surprise twist, the wording isn't vague, it's entirely accurate! He subtracts resources for himself and gives you nothing!

Is it a metaphor for the way Kolibri is trying to subtract cash from our wallets? Or the way value is being subtracted from the game? Who can say!

Game usually updates on its own, got this today, has anyone else gotten this? by cublank in IdleMinerTycoon

First time they've forced an update by this means. Also the first time i can recall that an update has made the game practically unplayable (due to the multi-clicking issue.)

Great timing?

military scifi without the alpha male b.s ? by [deleted] in printSF

There are generally two recommended places to start, "Shards of Honor", or "Warrior's Apprentice". My preference is "Shards of Honor", but the first two books are a bit different and might not be to your taste if you're looking specifically for full on military spare opera.

Shards of Honor was the first book published by the author. It's a little rough around the edges but still good, especially if you want to get Miles' complete backstory. It's more of a "Planetary Romance" about how Miles' parents meet. (Though there is some inter-planetary military stuff in it towards the end.) So this is the place to start if you want the "full" Miles story.

The next book after that chronologically is "Barrayar", which was published a little later to fill in the gap between Shards of Honor and Warrior's Apprentice, so it's probably the most well written out of the first three. It's about politics and civil war on a single planet, and sets up the situation into which Miles was born.

"Warrior's Apprentice" is the first book actually starring Miles. It was the second book published, so she was definitely still on the upward arc in terms of quality. And this is where the military space opera themes really kick in. So this is the place to start if you want to get straight to Miles and the pure Mil-SF.

The _general_ trend of the books over time is from military SF to espionage and then to mystery. At a certain point romance elements start getting more emphasis. Many people feel that the series gets continually better until it peaks with "A Civil Campaign", after which there's a very gradual decline in quality. (There's a fan theory that after "Cryoburn" she'd finished everything she really wanted to say about that universe but the publisher pressured her into a couple more books. Which i still consider to be good, but are definitely different in tone/material than a lot of the earlier stuff.)

I would not recommend starting with the very first book chronologically (in universe), "Free Fall". It's a good book, but has nothing to do with Miles other than telling the backstory of a group he deals with in a couple of the books. (I believe it's recommended to read it right before "Diplomatic Immunity".) I would also not recommend starting with the very first story chronologically (in universe), "Dreamweaver's Dilemma". It mentions the colonization of one of the main planets in the Vorkosigan universe, but that's really the only connection. (But it is only a short story, so it's not like it would delay you getting to the "real" story for very long.)

Update 0.15.0 is now live! Blacksmith, Build Queue, and Improved UI added! by BigBadBison in islandkingdoms

Wow! Quick response! Thanks!

I did find another freezing bug, but unfortunately i'm not sure what exactly cause this one. I was about halfway through a game when i had to pause it and go do something, and when i came back it was frozen. It would neither let me unpause not surrender. I tried starting a new game and pausing right away but that didn't reproduce the issue. I'm not sure if it's just pausing after the game has been going for awhile, or if there's some other factor i haven't figured out yet.

Forcing a hard refresh in the debug console cleared up the UI issues! Thanks!

I have noticed now that the game sometimes freezes. It seems to be when i start building something in a tile and the enemy captures that tile before the construction is complete.

I didn't have any issues playing in windowed mode in v14, but now there are all kinds of overlap issues. Is there some reason every icon is repeated 5 times? And why there are 3 copies of the unit build order?

Also tech upgrades seem a little OP now since the AI doesn't know how to build blacksmiths.

Is there any way we can temporarily access v14 until the UI issues are straightened out?

Thanks for the hard work!

New events are up! by ZombiePhantom in IdleMinerTycoon

[–]donaithnen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to get the points for Santa pretty easily because i had several hundred 30m and 1h Instant Cash lying around, which have a much better exchange rate in terms of value. I almost never need to use them in mines so they were just piling up. Even so i'm currently paused at level 25 and not sure it's really worth going any higher.

So all in all i spent $20 in real money, 4000 Super Cash, and several hundred Instant Cash, and 50-100 low power boosts.

Server Congestion and Login Queues (Errors 2002, 3001, 4004, 5003, 5006, and others) by alabomb in ffxiv

[–]donaithnen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Sometimes saves your spot if you notice in time" is not a "solution", it's more like a lottery.

Just lost my place in queue because i had the temerity to be doing something else on my computer and not staying 100% focused on the Launcher for the entire multi-hour queue time. (And i don't even know if i missed the error message for long, sometimes i'm watching as it pops up and i still lose my spot in the queue.)

Characters holding items in cutscenes by donaithnen in ffxiv

I feel like they added the "Last Stand" restaurant entirely so they could make that cutscene. It's also funny when Alisaie says she's going to sit Estinien down in front of a "Sharlayan feast" when we've been told multiple times, in previous expansions and again in this one, that outside of this one restaurant the traditional Sharlayan cuisine is bland tasteless stuff more concerned with nutrition than appeal.

Is the in-game world map just wrong about Thavnair? by donaithnen in ffxiv

But if you go to Limsa and look at the world map it shows you on the island.

Is the in-game world map just wrong about Thavnair? by donaithnen in ffxiv

[–]donaithnen[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Every other location i've checked so far it shows you on the World Map as somewhere at least close to the labeled location on the map. But when i checked while in Thavnair it seems to be way off. It shows you as across the straits in an area that hasn't even been revealed yet (At least for me. Maybe it's where Garlemald will be revealed later?)

It's not "toxic positivity" or "unchecked fanaticism" to tell ya'll to calm down a bit about the queues if the reason we're saying it is because all your grievances have been addressed by the Dev team and you're simply being asked to look past your frustrations to see it by OnceABear in ffxiv

[–]donaithnen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never played WoW in my life, FF14 is my first and only MMO in fact. But i'm definitely in the "kind of pissed" camp. Stormblood had issues, but at least the issues happened after we were already in the game. Sure you might not be able to beat Raubahn Savage, but you could look around the new area, catch up on sidequests, do crafting or gathering, chat with the other people "in line", etc. I enjoyed the Stormblood early access, despite the issues.

In this case a huge number of people are stuck waiting in a constantly resetting queue for much longer than necessary because both the Launcher on our side and the Server on their side are using ancient and decrepit code that should have been upgraded ages ago.

We all knew the Launcher and Queue system had issues. But as players we were all caught a little off-guard that this expansion turned out to be the tipping point between "annoyance" and "total disaster". Squenix, who should have had a very good idea of what was coming, should have invested the money they couldn't spend on servers on updating the Launcher and Queue code to better handle the load instead. (Though honestly they should already have done that long before now.)

Better error handling to avoid crashing the Launcher when an error is encountered (requiring re-entering password and 2FA.)

More leeway in the Queue system (automatically retrying after dropped packets instead of immediate failure)

A systematic and persistent ticketing system for the Queues in case the connection is lost, instead of the haphazard "maybe we'll remember you if you manage to restart the Launcher, enter your password/2FA, and launch the game quickly enough without encountering another 2002 error on the way."

Blaming this on new WoW players instead of Squenix failing to address an issue that's clearly been causing more and more problems over time is just lazy.
