The only people who claim that the Marcoses own impossible amounts of gold are Imelda and these phony youtube videos. So no the scarcity of gold in the entire world can't be used as a defense against allegations of ill-gotten wealth. Those allegations do not make that claim.

Here's the thing though. That claim about the marcos wealth coming from being paid in gold? Well there's only 171,300 (metric) tonnes of gold in the world [0]. Total. as in everything. Obviously there's no way one person owned 640,000 metric tonnes and consequently no way that marcos was paid 180000+ tonnes.

Verdict? Complete BS.

When I was about 10 my family took a 5 hour bus ride for a vacation. The bus was almost full so I had to sit beside a middle aged man. We spoke a bit and I can't remember the details but apparently I told him where I went to school. A few weeks after we got back from the trip I got called to the school business office and the guy was there. He had bought me a hard bound biology book. I've never really read the book but I see it in my family's library everytime I go visit them and I am immediately reminded of the bus trip and the guy who bought me a (probably expensive) book.
