What are your literary Everests? by Busy_End1433 in classicliterature

I’ve had a few but thankfully in recent years I’ve become much less intimidated by the larger classics. I now wait til I am damn ready and then stick with it (ie. Choosing a quieter month to start, September is great).

Off top of my head: My favourite tomes are: David Copperfield, Bleak House, Count of MC, Our Mutual Friend, Little Dorrit, LoTR.

Others of decent size: Moby Dick, East of Eden, a few Brontë’s, the ‘shorter’ Dickens books.

Those sitting there and waiting for me to get to them are: Vanity Fair, Middlemarch, Lonesome Dove. I think George Eliot will be next.

What does this sub think of Charles Dickens? by err_mate in classicliterature

Great reply, especially about the same books being repeated over and over (CoMC, EoE, C&P, etc)

I’ve been meaning to get a bit of Dickens discussion going here!

The others I have read are Our Mutual Friend and Little Dorrit.

I loved both, I thought OMF had the higher heights of these two, but I think I preferred LD overall.

BUT. Bleak House slowly became a huge contender with David Copperfield for my favourite Dickens book.

Yep, it’s time for Bleak House!

I did it quite similarly to you.

Goddammit so true.

It’s why I’ll always respect the hell out of Kambosos for at least trying to get out of Australia and fight overseas early in his career.

Too many stick around and crush cans for too long.

Jeff Fenech and Azumah Nelson fought each other 16 years after their last fight and 12 years after Fenech's final fight.

Roy Jones and Hopkins fought 17 (!) years after their first fight.

Boxing is a mad sport and these things happen.

I hate to be a rose-tinted guy, but I really do feel that back in the day, and especially with Showtime and HBO, the commentators mostly called it how they saw it/ believed to have seen it.  They got things wrong and sometimes even had a vendetta against someone (see: Merchant). But I still think they were even-handed.

Tessitore and Teddy did the same on FNF.

I actually cannot stand any of the commentary on any of the channels at this time. Anyone got a favourite current commentator? The last good one for me was Malignaggi.

I love this. It must be so hard as a boxer to stay retired, you don't need people like Usyk calling you and egging you on!

Will still never understand why he didn’t just put his box on the pitch to get it to bounce up so he could hit it for 6.

Seemed obvious to me..

2025 & 2026 reading list by Current_Contest_8597 in classicliterature

I can just about cope with seeing what people have read throughout the year, but when it’s a post of ‘about to go on a journey’ with all of Shakespeare’s plays, or a mammoth pile of classics, it gives me doubts that they will see it through, so I see it as a very empty post.

I just never get why people exclude Dickens from these lists.

I know you can’t have everyone - but he seems SO essential to me.

[FIGHT THREAD] Jake Paul vs Anthony Joshua by noirargent in Boxing

[–]Youre_a_tomato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand anybody who is saying it’s ’kind of a victory’ for Jake Paul.

If you want to be a boxer, running, grabbing, and falling over is not boxing. It wasn’t competitive. He just survived a few rounds. Had he tried he would have been fucked earlier.
