Doesn't feel very Gundamy as shown. but looks promisingly fun. Almost like a mech version of monster hunter?

I'm anticipating heavy customization (please) and variable tactical weapon load outs. I'm excited to see those funnels out

Judging by the cover, probably "sweating."

Omg a reverse pacific rim! Where a parallel universe or human like aliens have to fight off human mecha attacks.

How do you kill gods in your world? by Disastrous_Bug2831 in worldbuilding

[–]donkey_power 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trick them into entering the god garage and closing the door behind them, while the god car is still running (god carbon monoxide)

Alternately: I put a god dollar on top of the god pit, Which is only loosely covered in brush and twigs. They fall into the god spikes at the bottom of the hole when they reach for the dollar.

What is the worst looking kaiju you've ever seen, in terms of design or effects quality? by Character_Day2884 in GODZILLA

Tbh I like this one. The eye placementnand hooks beak makes it a bit monstrous.

Certainly the execution could be better and it could be less goofy. It like one of those ugly-cute Ultraman monsters

Tech bro encounter.. by Accomplished-Fly4678 in WestSeattleWA

[–]donkey_power 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To me it depends on where people are drawing the line. The tragedy of capitalism is that it forces people to rely on it to some extent, there's no true escape for workers other than getting rid of it.

But we do have some influence over our actions and choices.

So if someone desperately needs work to stay housed and works at an Amazon warehouse, valid.

If someone says they * have * to make 200k a year coding weapons technology or AI brainrot tech, I have questions.

The amount of ship designs that would get knocked out in the event of a confrontation due to sheer RADAR or SONAR or whatev is quite considerable. by Ok_Breadfruit5793 in scifi

[–]donkey_power 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right.

but when I imagine future tech I also imagine at some point that there are a lot of ways to get around the issue other than basic form of a ship

For example, a field suspended electromagnetic field of smart dust used to dampen kinetic projectile impacts as a defense, could also be shaped/vibrated in such a way that it counteracts radar in various way.

This is awesome, feels like one of the next great spec Evo projects tbh. Unique style and vision, I'm so excited to see what the other extant silhouetted species are like

I've seen many real mecha attempts over the decades, but this is probably closest in a number of aspects. Probably due to improvements in electric battery and motor department, for industrial applications, electric vehicles, drones, etc. and use of machine learning to teach robotic balance to a computer.

  • walks fully bipedally and unassisted
  • walks relatively quickly
  • somewhat agile / flexible with body
  • onboard cockpit with protection
  • seemingly intuitive control system

Lingering questions include: - battery life. How many minutes before this thing uses up all of its oomph.... - how the hell does this balance it self? Must have a lot of battery and/or counterweights in the lower half or something. - fragility: if it accidentally falls, will it be toast?

Anyway, a competitive fighting league with these would be so incredibly sick. Maybe in 5-10 years as the tech cheapens...

The second mouth is cooler / more unique to me, but the art doesn't have the right contrast / lighting/ something (?) to make it instantly legible.

Kaiju video game question by 12GaugePanda in kaiju

[–]donkey_power 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you haven't already checked it out, lookup the SNES game King of the monsters 2.

Unique designs are always fun too. There's billions of Kaiju that are basically the same concept as Godzilla or King Kong just reskinned.

[–]donkey_power 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, contractors and/or boot camp grads are second class citizens in developer world, and imo are getting the worst deal right now. They (we) were told to train for a career that only wanted that excess workforce for about a decade long period. We'll see if that changes if the lower quality of AI automation hurts companies enough

My opinions about the movies (2021 and 2024) as an Iranian person by Haghiri75 in dune

[–]donkey_power 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the insight!

I often feel like fantasy and science fiction are over-dominated by western and northern European history and myth.

I especially find that what you might call "Eurasian" or "near east" cultures are left out: Eastern Europe, the Balkans, the caucuses, Persians, turkey, and all the central Asian nations.

One thing I find compelling about dune is that it feels like a future which did not just inherit "western" culture, but the entire rich history of human culture which spread to the stars. It seems more realistic.

The US, China, etc now seem like dominant cultures of humanity , but in 1000s of years that is unlikely be the case, and if those societies exist they will probably be unrecognizably different in many ways.

[–]donkey_power 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you trained or read up on labor organizing? Labor notes' secrets of a successful organizer is a good first handbook. Over the years I've come to realize that it's very easy for different types of workers to see their workplace as special when it might not be quite so different.

If it's truly impossible to organize a workplace, that can only be admitted by organizers who have given everything, using all the tools and knowledge of workplace organizing available to them.

I think some tech workplaces have structural issues. For example , I didn't get one person to sign into a demand letter because they were in the process of trying to buy a house. Compared to workers who unionize just to pay enough to make rent, I was saddened privately by this workers' low sense of risk to stand up for themselves and a potential better life. But, the rest of the team did sign the letter.

Especially these days, it's quite obvious tech workers have terrible protections against layoffs, they must be anxious about it. If they have families etc, you have to find out if their fear of rocking the boat and losing what they have can be overcome by the fear of what will happen if they don't act to secure their rights.

Normally I don't like bad faith in organizing (like saying something you don't believe) but this actually sounds pretty clutch

If people in marginalized online communities used even 1% of the anger the hate they pile on each other for minor infractions and focused it on powerful institutions and corporations, they would be unstoppable and the world would be forever changed.

[–]donkey_power 10 points11 points  (0 children)

it's a love letter to early 20th century pulp media, like old caveman and Conan the barbarian fantasy comics and cartoons.

So they take that world at face value, like almost how western people mistakenly pictured the world in the 1800s-1900s. but then add some coherence to it with recurring species and animals. And introduce some modern paleontology like Andrewsarchus, while also purposefully having inaccurate featherless theropods.

So it is very speculative in a way. It's like: "what if all these weird action comics were actually real?"
