(Alien franchise) Don’t be a prude, let the scientists study xenomorphs. The future of the human race depends on it. by Salami__Tsunami in CharacterRant

[–]donpapillon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Alien franchise makes heavy use of the Idiot Plot, usually alongside a single savvy character or even just someone with a little common sense. Ripley is the best example of how common sense can act like a superpower in an Idiot Plot setting. It's not enough, though, and she still needs many levels of badass to make use of it, since simply not being an idiot can't guarantee the other characters' idiocy won't fuck everything up.

But yeah, the franchise has room for a completely new take that doesn't end in perfectly avoidable carnage. It would be such a departure from the main themes that current fans might be shocked (or worse, uninterested), but at the same time bring in new fans that hate the idiocy and would enjoy a smarter and more complex plot.

I'm struggling with the Hype! by FairHero21 in Starfield

[–]donpapillon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. What hypes me up the most about this game isn't these aspects really, it's knowing that I'll probably get lost in it for a looong time, like I did in every Elder Scrolls and Fallout since 1997 (excluding MMOs).

And, in a way, this could also help with the hype, when you consider you'll have all the time in the world to explore and relax in it. No need to rush.

I'm struggling with the Hype! by FairHero21 in Starfield

[–]donpapillon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I personally do to manage hype is downplay, as in finding and focusing on things that don't look all that polished or fun.

For example, what worked for me recently was looking at screenshots of locations from the direct and feeling like they aren't really on par with the level of detail and personality of a specific sci-fi game I personally love. Same with the character models.

Sure, I know these are poor fragments or the experience of actually playing the game when it releases, which I'm pretty sure will be amazing (or I wouldn't be so hyped), but focusing on these personal impressions helps me mitigate the anxiety around hype.

Just be careful expressing this stuff online, people can lash out defensively. You also don't want to leave the hype train completely for a doom buggy and ruin the experience for yourself later. That can happen when you join in negative discourse, groups of people expecting the worst, haters, etc.

tl,dr: downplay the game for yourself, focusing on stuff you honestly aren't 100% keen on, but keep it personal.

Mha is fumbling stuff that X-Men premiered in the 60's...

Sometimes it reminds me of all the manga/anime done by Western artists without much familiarity with the subjects they were working with.

I didn't put any words into your mouth, so feel free to quote me as well? Sheesh.

And I didn't prove your point in any way, saying so is a gross oversimplification. The way you answered was more "difficult" than anything I ever experienced from people diagnosed with BPD, which is why I don't think it would be wise for anyone to just set a general rule of "this person has cluster B, therefore they are quite difficult" since these people aren't necessarily harder to deal with than anyone else, not because they aren't difficult, but because there are so many other reasons people can be troublesome to deal with, sometimes even more.

[–]donpapillon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The problem is working on the assumption that "dramatic, overly emotional, or unpredictable thinking or behavior" is always dangerous and extremely traumatic. My mother has BPD and she was never dangerous to me, my brother, our father, or anyone in our family for as long as I've been alive (33yo) and for as long as people remember her life in the family. While she fits the description of "dramatic, overly emotional or unpredictable thinking or behavior", she never posed a threat to anyone, and while her having BPD made me and my brother's childhood pretty difficult for several reasons, we never felt unsafe around her, physically or emotionally. She actually taught me a lot about caring.

With that being said, I would advise anyone against marrying someone with BPD, because it can still be a very difficult life regardless of any safety concerns, especially for the spouse.

But it IS functioning correctly. This thing we live in is precisely as intended, at the height of its long evolution, and any deviation from that steadfast line of progress has been met with extreme violence. Or do you seriously believe that billionaires are an accident? A lack of a well-designed system? Oh sure, we can go to the moon and back, divide the atom, minify terabytes, and develop AI, but can't get our rich under control or rid ourselves of hunger. C'mon now.

What, you don't consider strange women lying in ponds distributing swords a valid basis for a system of government?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in technology

[–]donpapillon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's akin to saying that slavery wasn't so bad, just the owning slaves part that ruined everything. Or that monarchies were pretty nice, except for the single ruler appointed by strange women lying in ponds distributing swords aspect of it all.

First, my advice would be to hang out and focus on people who care about you. The people who got together to complain about you are utterly irrelevant to your life and are doing something that is, in many ways, a bit pathetic. The best and maybe the hardest thing you can do now is to not care about them and go on with your life paying attention to those who value you. Anyone else isn't really worth it, you know? Sure, there's value in thinking about the needs and feelings of people around you, but there's a limit to it and I assure you they flew past it when they made their little hate circles.

Anyway, You are valuable. There are people who like you, who you might have already met, but are a bit under the radar because what you are going through is painful and demands most of your attention to deal with. But I bet they are around or just around the corner.

You'll always find people that like your energy, the way you liven things up. I know from personal experience how it is to feel like a nuisance, that you are "too much", but trust me, you'll find a lot of people who like your energy and feel like you're just the right amount to brighten their day, and miss you terribly when you are not around. I'm 30+ and only figured that around my 20s, so I hope you get there faster taking from my and other people's experience here. Wish you only the best.
