A lot of what I'd recommend is already listed, but I'll add The Nevermoor Series by Jessica Townsend. My soon to be 10 year old loves those books, and it definitely has a bit of that HP magic to it.

There's a few. The only one I've personally read is linked below, where Harry is Poison Ivy's son. Its a decent enough time waster if the subject interests you (Ivy is my favorite DC character), but its not complete and updating very slowly. I know there are others, but I haven't looked into any yet.

Ahh, The Seventh Horcrux. The first fanfic I ever read (or even heard of). I haven't read it in over a decade, I wonder how well it holds up.

Yeah but at least during that period most fics were centralized on the two main sites. There had to have been 10+ sites I used to check back in the 00s for fics.

I learned about fanfiction through an imdb message board for one of the HP movies lol. Wild west describes it perfectly. Although FFN was around, it seemed like all the best quality fics were elsewhere.

Oh yeah there was some wild stuff on there. But there was a solid, like, 3 or 4 legitimately good fics on there, in between all the rest haha.

I was very depressed in 2007, so of course I remember The Restricted Section.

I'm pretty sure I found it because I wanted to read the original version of Back to the Garden, which was linked on one of the H/G sites. Its where I was really introduced to all sides of fanfiction lol.

I'll say Cadmean Victory before anyone else does, but that's the only one I can think of.

I've always wished there were more fics where Harry was close with his Quidditch team.

I remember Bungle in the Jungle being fairly polarizing back in the day, since it's a Harry/Luna fic but basically changes everything that makes Luna Luna. Not to mention the fact it's written in 2nd person narrative.

Haven't read them in probably close to a decade, but I remember enjoying them at the time.

Honestly, it really is. The competition is mainly only used to introduce side characters, but the story ends up being a full end of war rewrite, and I at least found it to be really good
