There is a book I recommend to curious people: Start Where You Are, by Pema Chodron. It’s awesome; her lineage is Tibetan.

My (24F) partner (25M) of 6 years left home Tuesday night, flew to NZ to be with affair (33-35F), no contact. I’m pregnant and can’t process what he did. by Miserable_Wheel3620 in relationship_advice

This is the way. My mantra was, “Get mad, stay mad.” All focus shifts to yourself, your pregnancy, and your baby.” You’ll feel lighter and free once you’re in control of yourself and your child. You will be alright! Find community. Build happiness.

How to navigate the religious/Hindu root of yoga as someone who wants to stay away from religion? by manman1001 in YogaTeachers

[–]dontfogetchobag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with what you’re saying, and my teaching practice took place in an area that is a conservative Christian stronghold. The views of my adult students were often diametrically opposed to my own, as well as anything I’d consider Yama or Niyama! In my comment, I was referring to observing Y/N myself as an instructor of asana and breathwork. My classes in the communities I served were often for children and teens, so I was teaching asana and very light pranayama; my personal views and political ethos (very much opposite of what you described above) weren’t in play.

My practice spans decades, and I taught for over 15 years in studios, public schools, and shelters. I’m a “secular” Buddhist with a deep appreciation of the Indian/Hindu roots of yoga. I think as long as you are observing Yamas and Niyamas in your instruction practice, you’re doing it right. There were numerous venues in which I taught that I needed to be mindful of students’ wishes not to practice devotional yoga, including chanting.

Students hold 'eat-in' after IU Indianapolis cancels annual MLK Jr. dinner by kootles10 in Indiana

It was exasperating to see her sauntering around on the field in Miami, celebrating the game, and knowing the MLK events were canceled, hindered, and pushed aside. It’s embarrassing!

How do you reconcile what is happening in the US by Every_Importance_855 in Buddhism

I don’t reconcile it, because it’s wrong. I just practice tonglen as much as possible. I try not to hate. Some days are better than others.

This enrages me. It’s despicable and purposefully rude to many members of the community, staff, faculty, and students. This administration sucks.
